CLASSWORK PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANT PROPOSAL
NEEDS/PROBLEM STATEMENT
The vision of Technology Department of Gainesville School System is to provide and maintain a stable electronic and technology instructional environment, while collaborating with the individuals in the system to better serve the Systems constituents (students, faculty, staff, administrators, Instructional Technology Specialists* and the public) along with identifying emerging technologies to meet the System’s changing needs. Gainesville School System is a medium size Title I Schoolwide System, along with being a charter system. The School System is located in Gainesville, Georgia with approximately 7,424 students, consisting of five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and a non-traditional high school. Our population is comprised of 56% Hispanic, 18% Caucasian, 20% African American, 3% Asian and 3% Multi-racial. After the needs assessment conducted in March of 2013, that shows the need for Professional learning to be provided to administrators, teachers and paraprofessional and will focus on the following areas based on school improvement plans: Differentiated Instruction, Balanced Assessment, Designing Rubrics and Classroom Assessments, “It is critical that new and Examining Student Work, Using veteran teachers keep up-to-date Data Analysis to Inform Instruction, Critical Thinking and Questions on the technology being used to Skills, Problem-Based Learning, enhance the success of the Physical Education and Health students.” Standards, CTAE Career Pathways, Positive Behavior Support, classroom use of technology, Communities In Schools, Teacher Keys Evaluation System, Leader Keys, Common Core, Student Learning Objectives, Core Content, RTI, ESOL and Gifted Education. This identifies a need for a detailed Professional Development to be conducted for administrators, teachers and paraprofessionals to use Classworks as a tool to help RTI students increase their performance in Math, Reading and Language Arts. Classworks is a self-paced, computer-based instructional program that allows instruction that is targeted to the needs of the individual students. In addition to providing extra practice in reading and math, this program also has a unique ability to create an individualized learning path based on student needs.

We believe our proposal will work to for the following reasons below: 1. It is critical for new and veteran teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to not only learn the technology being used, but to also learn from each other.

2. It is critical that new and veteran teachers keep up-to-date on the technology being used to enhance the success of the students.

3. Classworks has a proven track record of effectiveness. Study include: a. In the Effective Programs in Elementary Mathematics: A Best-Evidence Synthesis, Classworks was named a top-rated program based on strength of effectiveness and received the highest review of all computer-assisted instruction programs in the study. This was published in the Best Evidence Encyclopedia, which is created by the Johns Hopkins University School of Education's Center for Data-Driven Reform in Education (CDDRE) under funding from the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education. b. An empirical study entitled The Effects of Classworks in the Classroom, which uses gold standard methodology from an independent third-party researcher to demonstrate measurable effects.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES
GEA should administer district benchmark assessments to gauge students’ mastery of grade level standards in Math, Reading and Language Arts. K-5 students who are identified for intervention would be assigned to work on Classworks a minimum of 45 minutes per subject per week. Targeted students would also meet after school as members of a “Classworks Club.” In addition, teachers would give students short assignments in Classworks, based on their whole class instruction and students’ areas of need. By May 31, 2014, Gainesville School System would have implemented the classwork program to help with RTI students. To achieve this goal all stakeholders, principals and teachers should actively participate in the implementation of this program by identifying their targeted population; which in this project are struggling students who are on RTI. The Classworks implementation team should work with a fully understanding of academic goals, student needs, and technology availability in the schools. They should start small with a sizeable group of teachers and students. Faculty and staff should be trained in key performance areas as this it increases the program's credibility. They then, generate a School Implementation Plan to ensure that students receive assignments that help improve performance. The process of getting training should follow the Classworks protocol which focuses at classwork champions that include staff members, Site managers, Teacher Full Users, Teacher Partial Users and Lab Managers. These champions should engage in thorough training because they are the ones who are to spearhead this program. They should work hand in hand with the Classwork Implementation manager who will guide them on every step they take. The implementation manager can come to the site whenever needed. The Classworks implementation managers should develop skills that ensure best practices and motivations are implemented with leadership and teachers. They should have clear communication with staff and faculty. Staff development workshops should be held biweekly with the champion team and monthly meetings with teachers who will have the targeted students. They should have a managerial scheduling and access to working technology. e.g. computer labs and the classrooms. By the year 2014-2015 students in the RTI program at Gainesville Exploration Academy would have increased their student performance level across all grade levels by 50%. GEA should integrate Classworks into Tier 2 of its RTI program to provide customized interventions for struggling or at-risk students. They should use an RTI

8

10/28/2013

model for intervention. Classworks can be used for screening, instruction and progress monitoring from Tier 1, which includes students performing on grade level, through Tier 4, which assigns an Individualized Education Plan for each student. RTI students at GEA will receive intervention through this program by providing learners with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning. Students on TIER 2 will receive additional time for targeted instruction focused on their areas of need. This program will use research-proven instruction to practice concepts. It also offers students additional time for targeted instruction to get back on track with their peers. Progress is tracked through reporting of skills mastered. Classworks program will offer students intensive, one-on-one tutoring and ongoing analysis of progress. Instruction is often customized by learning style to maximize results. The combination of increased instructional time and skill building at lower levels accelerates learning. Classworks will offer rich, standards-based instruction for all students, including project-based learning focused on college and career readiness for the 21st century. It uses Universal Screeners track longitudinal growth for all students and identifies struggling students for possible intervention. Classworks helps students to be accountable for their work in that they are able to see their results and how they are improving. Teacher conferencing with students, praising them and asking questions when students do not do well. Teachers should learn about valuable information about students. They should provide immediate intervention as needed and if they do not understand, teachers should provide students with their weaknesses and strengths. Classworks provides the flexibility for teachers to supervise or fine-tune instructional paths with a simple mouse click. When a student needs an assignment adjustment – adding remedial activities, skipping a particular skill, or redoing an assignment – this process is simple and intuitive. In a time of shrinking resources, this is a great way to integrate the new Common Core standards into the curriculum, even before they are integrated into the pacing guide. As with state standards alignment, Common Core alignment is compiled manually to ensure fidelity. The program should provide time for teachers to collaborate and brain storm about challenges posed by Classworks in regular staff meetings. Provision should also be made for teachers to conduct peer tutoring to those who are uncomfortable with technology or navigation within the system. By the end of 2015 students at GEA will increase their pass rate on the CRCT results in Math, ELA and Reading by 25% as a result of the Classwork Program. Classworks should be aligned to the QCC, GPS, and the CRCT, so that teachers are able to select the sequence of instruction that meets students’ needs. This enables teachers to assign units of instruction in Classworks, knowing they are

9

10/28/2013

preparing students for the year’s CRCT and next year’s QCC classroom, concurrently. This program offers over 4,000 hours of instruction and 10,000 activities available to students to fill in any gaps created with the textbook usage. Classworks has a number of features and benefits that are ideally suited to promoting student success and improved academic achievement at GEA. According to results from the analysis of this program, Classworks has more than 180 software titles from leading publishers, 8,600 activities, and more than 4,000 hours of interactive, standards-based, managed activities. Each unit includes instruction, practice, assessment, and a real-world project. In mathematics, students are taken from beginning level skills for pre-algebra and algebra through mastery of advanced mathematics concepts. In language arts, once students have mastered reading skills and are fluent readers, they are taken through more advanced language, literature, writing, and communication skills. The Classworks’ Georgia Edition is specifically aligned to GPS and the CRCT. There are projects that are offered with each unit that give students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world situations, ensuring mastery of each specific objective. Classworks also help faculty members with differentiated instruction, and sound unit structure based on best practices demonstrated to keep students enthusiastically engaged in every stage of the learning process. Because Classworks is a technology-based curriculum it should be fully integrated into classroom instruction and individual student learning. As a result this will improve student achievement and playing to the strengths of the digital generation. By the year 2014-2015 teachers and principals at GEA will be able to provide data in clear and meaningful ways to their students. Give teachers designated time every month to analyze Classwork data. While students work in power units, teachers will run biweekly reports to check progress on standards. Teachers should discuss with students their scores and show them individualized Learning Paths to follow. To monitor student progress, teachers regularly use the Classworks Manager instructional management system and reporting. Curriculum-based Measurement (CBM) probes offer weekly progress monitoring. Classworks has a CRCT import function, which enables student results to be imported directly into the program, automatically creating and prescribing individualized learning paths for each student – based on their results and tailored to their instructional needs. The student then immediately starts working within Classworks on their prescribed learning path. Classworks curriculum also integrates the four components of the performance standards into the instructional process with clear reporting of student progress and results. Classworks also offers data-driven decision making and Informed Instruction. Classworks assessment tools diagnose student weaknesses and automatically prescribe individualized learning paths. The extensive management and reporting

10

10/28/2013

system encourages close progress monitoring, providing detailed student progress reports. The Classworks import utility imports students’ state assessment scores and automatically creates individual learning paths to address each student’s needs. GEA should use The Data to Instruction section to import student results from last year's CRCT results, turning the results into an individualized learning path. The Diagnostic/Prescriptive section furthermore gives multiple assessment opportunities which drive results in the creation of learning paths. Classwork Benchmarking Assessment to complete the loop between informed instruction, student activities, assessment results, and accountability.
