Thanksgiving





Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States.

Origin of Thanksgiving Day





Thanksgiving is one of the most important festivities in America. It has a very interesting history. The first thanksgiving dinner took place in i n the 17th century century..

The voyage of the Pilgrims





The pilgrims crossed the the Atlantic in the year year 1620 on the the Mayflower . About 102 people travelled for two months with extreme difficulty because of terrible storms.

Arrival in Plymouth





The pilgrims reached Plymouth rock on December 11th 1620, after a sea journey of 66 days. Nearly46 pilgrims died because of extreme cold in winter winter.. However, However, in the spring of 1621, Squanto, a native Indian taught the pilgrims to survive by growing food.

First Thanksgiving Feast



The Pilgrims learned to grow corn, beans and pumpkins from the Indians, which helped all of them survive . In the autumn of 1621, they held a big celebration where 90 people were invited including Indians. The grand feast was organized to thank god for his favors. This dinner was “The first thanksgiving feast”.

Turkey and First Thanksgiving Feast



There is no evidence to prove if the turkey was a part of the initial feast. According to the first hand account written by the leader of the colony,, the food included, ducks, geese, colony g eese, venison, fish, berries, lobster, watercress, corn, plums, …

Pumpkin and Thanksgiving Feast





Pumpkin pie is a modern dessert. It was was not part of the first thanksgiving feast. Pilgrims however, however, ate boiled pumpkin. There was no bread.

The feast continued for three days and was eaten outside.  After a number of events and changes, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November a holiday in the year 1863. 

Thanksgiving Day tradition

Thanksgiving Day is a communal celebration marked as a sense of gratitude people feel for all the good things in life. This is done by offering prayers, gifting your near and dear ones and: 1- family reunion 2- eating turkey 3- parades 4- football games.

1- Family Reunion and Feasting





Family feast is an important tradition during Thanksgiving. The entire family sits at the table during dinner and pray. pray. It is also a time for relatives living in different places to come together and celebrate.

2- Tradition of Turkey





The traditional stuffed turkey adorns every dinner table during the feast. Pumpkin pie, Cranberry sauce, Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere to mark the day. The thanksgiving celebration will be incomplete without it.

3- Parades



. In the present day, day, parades are accompanied with musical shows and celebrities.

THANKSGIVING CUSTOMS Custom of Praying





'Thanksgiving Day' is associated with communal prayers in church and in homes. People offer various meal time prayers during the day day.. It is a time, when mankind thanks God for all his blessings and grace. It is also a day to show gratitude to your friends and relatives for all the good deeds.

Watching football during Thanksgiving is i s a popular tradition.

Custom of Family Dinner

Everyone follows the custom of family dinner and reunion every Everyone year. People travel long distances to be with their family. Feasts are usually held at home. It is a time to enjoy their favourite 'Roasted Turkey' with the family.

Custom of Decoration





Thanksgiving is a time to decorate homes with fresh and dried flowers. They light lamps and tables are adorned with best china and antique silver cutlery to mark the occasion.

Custom of sending messages



Thanksgiving is a day when people send loving messages and warm wishes to their relatives, colleagues at work place, superiors and subordinates, near and dear ones. It is a day of conveying their feelings through Thanksgiving cards.
