A strainer of this quality would create a large pressure drop, require frequent cleaning and be very expensive to purchase and install. A Hyflo separator continuously removes debris from water. The "rate of separation" depends on the size and amount of particles being removed. Hyflo has independent tests which show that 169.15 cubic centimetres of #60 grade sand was removed in 15 minutes from 60 litres of water.

Specification

Low Pressure Drop Hyflo separators operate efficiently with a pressure drop of 3 to 10 psi. (21 to 69 kPaD). Cost-Effective Installation. Standard pipe sizes and fittings mate directly to new and existing systems. How it Works Liquid and solids tangentially enter the Hyflo separator creating a circular flow. Hyflo separators have a unique full-flow entry chamber without any baffles or slots which can clog and result in frequent maintenance.

Centrifugal force pulls the particles heavier than the liquid out toward the walls of the Hyflo separator.

The Hyflo separator has no moving parts or filter media. It is a precisely engineered vessel through which the system liquid passes and is cleaned by generating maximum centrifugal force. The Hyflo separator is installed in a vertical position to allow full gravitational force to quickly pull the solids downward past the spin/ trap plate and into the holding chamber.

Gravity pulls the solids gradually down the center vortex of the Hyflo separator’s collection chamber. Cleansed liquid rises up through the center vortex of the Hyflo separator and continues through the system.

The collection chamber is purged depending upon the rate of collection and the quantity of solids.

questions frequently asked about hyflo separators Q. Why do I need a ‘Hyflo’ separator when I already have a strainer system?

Q. My system is still new so why should I pay for a ‘Hyflo’ separator?

A. A ‘Hyflo’ separator is much more efficient than most strainers as it will remove particles 50 microns in size or the equivalent of a 325 mesh strainer. It is impracticle to install this quality of a strainer in a hydronic system as it would create a large pressure drop in the system, require frequent cleaning and be very expensive to purchase and install.

A. The best time to begin protecting a system is when it’s new so it will stay that way for many years. A ‘Hyflo’ separator will help keep your system looking and running like new for a long time.

Q. Where do I install a ‘Hyflo’ separator? A. A ‘Hyflo’ separator is usually installed downstream of the pump before the main system equipment. For best results, a ‘Hyflo’ separator sized for “full flow” should be selected. If space or economy is a concern then a ‘Hyflo’ separator sized for 10% flow will provide surprisingly good results. Q. Why do I need a separator when I have a chemical treatment program? A. A chemical treatment program is only designed to keep particles like pipe scale in suspension so they don’t collect in the lining of the piping system. Chemicals alone do not remove this scale from the water - only a ‘Hyflo’ separator can do that. The more suspended solids in the water system, the higher the concentration of chemicals required and the more expensive the chemical treatment program. The ideal combination is to have a chemical treatment program in conjunction with a ‘Hyflo’ separator. The chemicals keep the pipe scale in suspension and the separator will remove the scale from the water. Q. I don’t want to keep replacing system water lost in the blowdown process for the draining out particles from a ‘Hyflo’ separator. How often do I need to blowdown a separator. A. The frequency of separator blowdown required varies depending on the amount of debris in a system. Only a small amount of water is lost in the draining process as it only takes a few seconds to purge the holding tank of debris. Q. Why do I need a ‘Hyflo’ separator since I have a closed loop system?

Q. We are considering converting our existing chilled water system into a ‘crossover system’ so we can run our cooling tower instead of our chiller to provide the lower temp water on light load days. However, we are concerned that the cooling tower will contaminate our normally closed loop system with sand and other debris. Will the ‘Hyflo’ separator be able to clean the cooling tower water well enough to incorporate a ‘crossover system’? A. ‘Hyflo’ separators have been used successfully for several years in the exact type of application. The ability of a ‘Hyflo’ separator to remove very small particles of sand is particularly important when using water from an open cooling tower to provide the cooling medium for a building. Q. What is the “rate of separation” for a ‘Hyflo’ separator? How long will it take to clean up my system once I install a ‘Hyflo’ separator? A. A ‘Hyflo’ separator continuously removes debris from water. The ‘rate of separation’ depends on the size and amount of particles being removed. We have independent tests on our ‘Hyflo’ separator which show that 10.32 cubic inches of #60 grade of sand was removed in 15 minutes from six decaliters of water. It may be possible to estimate the amount of time required, but we would have to know all the pertinent facts regarding your system. Q. What won’t the ‘Hyflo’ separator be able to remove from my system? A. The only materials that a ‘Hyflo’ separator will not efficiently remove are those lighter than 1.20 specific gravity. Particles like floating wood chips, dry leaves, etc. are not easily removed by the centrifugal action of the separator.

A. All closed loop systems have some entrained air in the water causing oxidation of the piping which eventually breaks loose and appears as loose particles in the water. The older the system, the greater the oxidation process and amount of pipe scale.
