The Toyota Celica was first introduced to the world market in 1971. The very first Celica was made in Japan in December 1970. The T model featured a 1!""cc #$cylinder D%&C power plant fitted with 'ole( carburetors that developed 11! horsepower and a !$speed floor shift transmission. The suspension combined )acpherson struts in the front and #$link lateral rods in the rear for e(tremely stable handlin*. Celica models offered a choice of four en*ines and three transmissions+ a total of seven different confi*urations. The ,iftback was introduced in 197-. The ustralian market received only the ,T model Celica with the standard /T en*ine. The 'T and T models were never imported into ustralia by Toyota. )ost of the early Celicas in ustralia were T// and then the newer /2. The first letter of the model number relates to the en*ine type. 3or e(ample the in 4T//4 means that it had a T series en*ine+ either the /T+ /T5 or /T. The second letter relates to the body style and all 71$77 Celicas have the 44 type body style.
