NFL
CARDINALS 12, RAMS 6

NFL BRIEFS

Another QB hurt,
but Cardinals win

Playing not on Newton’s mind
Panthers QB says he
feels fortunate to have
survived accident

Arizona survives injury
to Stanton but manages
just 4 FGs to beat Rams
ST. LOUIS — Drew Stanton
hopped off the field to the
bench and was carted off with a
right knee injury.
For the second straight
meeting against the St. Louis
Rams, the Arizona Cardinals
lost a quarterback.
They won both times,
thanks to strong defense.
Chandler Catanzaro kicked
four field goals, and the Cardinals overcame the loss of Stanton with their stifling defense,
moving closer to clinching a
playoff spot with a 12-6 victory
over the St. Louis Rams on
Thursday night.
The Rams (6-8) were held
to Greg Zuerlein’s two short
field goals and had five threeand-out series in the third
quarter. Catanzaro’s 23-yard
field goal early in the second
quarter ended nine quarters of
shutout defense by St. Louis,
which beat Washington and
Oakland by a combined 76-0
the previous two weeks.
The Rams were eliminated
from playoff contention.
Ryan Lindley was ineffective in his first appearance
since 2012 in relief of Stanton,
who injured his right knee on a
sack in the third quarter, but it
didn’t matter. The Cardinals
lost Carson Palmer to a seasonending knee injury during their
31-14 home victory over St.
Louis last month.
The Cardinals (11-3) entered
tied for the top overall record in
the NFC and will clinch a playoff spot if Sunday’s Dallas-Philadelphia game doesn’t end in a
tie, or a Detroit loss combined
with a Green Bay victory.

Arizona quarterback Drew Stanton is sacked by St. Louis
Rams defenders from left: Aaron Donald, Alec Ogletree
and Eugene Sims.

Rams rookie Tre Mason’s
fumble gave the Cardinals a
short field that set up Catanzaro’s first field goal. Frostee
Rucker punched the ball free
and Foote recovered at the St.
Louis 27.
It was the first score given
up by the Rams since Nov. 23,
when San Diego scored the
winning touchdown with just
over 8 minutes left in a 27-24
victory.
Michael Floyd’s 49-yard reception set up Catanzaro’s 44yard field goal that put the Cardinals up 6-3 midway through
the second. Catanzaro made
kicks of 51 yards and 46 yards
in the second half
Arizona committed five
penalties on its first two possessions, twice wiping out big
gains. Shaun Hill was 4 for 4
with completions of 21 yards to
Benny Cunningham on a
screen and Cory Harkey for 16
yards to set up Zuerlein’s 24yard field goal in the first. Zuerlein missed an extra-point kick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cam
Newton is not worried about
when he’ll return to the football field — he said he’s just
happy to be alive.
The Panthers quarterback
returned to the team’s facility
Thursday, two days after a twocar accident left him with two
fractures in his lower back. He
did not practice and his playing
status will be reevaluated next
week.
“As far as when I’m coming
back, who cares? I’m just
thankful to have breath in my
lungs,” Newton said at a news
conference.
Newton won’t play Sunday
against Tampa Bay, Derek Anderson will start at quarterback.
Newton arrived at the stadium Thursday morning and attended some team meetings,
watched film and began rehabilitation with the training
staff. He said his back remains
a little stiff, but otherwise feels
great.
Redskins expect McCoy to
start: Washington Redskins
coach Jay Gruden anticipates
Colt McCoy will be sufficiently
recovered from a neck injury in
time to start Sunday against
the New York Giants, adding
that McCoy is “in the lead”
above Robert Griffin III and
Kirk Cousins despite coming
off a subpar performance.
McCoy was officially listed
as limited in practice Thursday
and will need to receive a final
medical clearance on Friday,
but Gruden believes McCoy
will get the go-ahead from the
doctor.
McCoy sprained his neck
when he was sacked in the
fourth quarter of a 24-0 loss to
the St. Louis Rams.
Sanchez shrugs off critics:
Criticism is nothing new for

brushes it aside.
After Seattle beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-14 last week,
Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett said Sanchez is
“impersonating a good quarterback.” Sanchez has more important matters to focus on
with a first-place showdown
against the Cowboys coming
up Sunday night.
“I guess he doesn’t like me.
No biggie,” Sanchez said with a
shrug. “We just worry about
the opinion in our locker room.
We’re poised and ready to go
against Dallas.”

Sanchez is 3-2 as a starter
since replacing Nick Foles after
he broke his collarbone on Nov.
2. He was excellent in wins at
Houston, at the Cowboys and
over Carolina. But he struggled
in losses at Green Bay and
against Seattle.
When he plays well, fickle
fans want Sanchez to get a contract extension and lead the
team into the future. When he
throws interceptions, they
want him gone.
A victory over the Cowboys
(9-4) would put the Eagles
(9-4) on the brink of winning
their second straight NFC East
title.
Sanchez’s future could depend on how he performs this
week. He’s played plenty of big
games before. Sanchez led the
New York Jets to AFC championship games his first two seasons, but ended up being
laughed out of the Big Apple.
“You don’t change,” he said
about the way he handles important games. “You trust your
preparation and trust your system and take your training onto the field.”

AROUND THE LEAGUE
NY Jets: TE Jace Amaro
(concussion) fully practiced
Thursday after missing the last
two games. Wide receiver Percy Harvin sat out for a second
straight day with a sprained
left ankle.
San Francisco: Defensive
coordinator Vic Fangio expects
OLB Ahmad Brooks to return
to the starting lineup after his
benching last week for missing
a team meeting.
St. Louis: The team is making a donation The Backstoppers, a St. Louis organization
that provides financial assistance to families of police officers, firefighters and paramedics killed in the line of duty, after five of the team’s players
made a “hands up” gesture in
reference to protests in Ferguson, Mo.
