‘Space Oddities’ Film Review

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Directed by Stanley Kubrick  Honestly, this film was like a slow blur. One moment your watching apes evolve, the next your in a space shuttle in the middle of  space where a Computer AI wants to take over and then out of nowhere your in a bedroom where the camera keeps flipping between some guy in different camera angles, as film critic Roger Ebert puts nicely: The film did not provide the clear narrative and easy entertainment cues the audience expected. The closing sequences, with the astronaut inexplicably finding himself in a bedroom somewhere beyond Jupiter, were baffling.’ (Ebert, 1997) Putting the little and poor story line aside the special effects and perspective used throughout where amazing. ‘

There was one part in the opening sequence Figure 1 ‘Dawn of mankind’ when the apes were separated into two groups, and one ape in peculiar found a way to create a weapon from picking up a bone and bashing it. That part right there, Caesar from Rupert Wyatt’s ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ came to mind: When Caesar finds out he’s capable of much more and doesn’t  want to get pushed around no more in the cage.

The use of simple, sharp, equal sized shapes suggest from an early start that the film is futuristic. The Oscar-winning, groundbreaking special effects are a mesmerizing mix of imagination and science ’ (Errigo, 2006) especially when it  ‘

came to the ending sequence of trippy patterns switching colours. Everything is always pointed in one point perspective point of view making your eye automatically wonder that way. Miniatures play a big part in the special effects what with the space scenes seeing the space ships float across space and having a backdrop in the background.

Another main feature within Kubrick’s 2001 is the Computer AI character ‘Hal 9000’ who wants to take over the spaceship. This storyline may remind you of  such films like James Cameron’s ‘Terminator’, Alex Proyas’s ‘I -Robot’ and Pixar’s cartoon ‘Wall-E’ – all of which a computer AI wants to destroy the human race and take it over. Hibernation again plays a big part in majority of science-fiction films – James Cameron’s ‘Alien’ and ‘Avatar’ and even cartoons like Matt  Groening’s ‘Futurama’; its like we represent it with space and travelling to another dimension. Almar Haflidason sums up the film by saying ‘ even in today's world of CGI, it's safe to say that the effects are still very impressive ’ (Haflidason, 2001) which they are, and if weren’t for the special effects Stanley Kubrick had happen it wouldn’t  be worth watching but has influenced many science-fiction films of today.
