Our goal for the 2011 Institute is to educate, entertain, and challenge our members to join the revolution for change. As part of that, we adopted The Beatles' song "Revolution" as our theme. In addition to the amazing guitar licks, the words are an inspiration. When we talk about change, we are focusing on inspiring lawyers, judges, and experts to bring back respect and dignity to the legal processes around family issues.

KICK-OFF TO THE 2011 FAMILY LAW INSTITUTE volution” With Headliner Alec Baldwin a “Kick-Off to the Re a/k/
ABOUT THE KICK-OFF:
This year, for the first time, we are including a kick-off to the Institute, a/k/a “The Kick-Off to the Revolution.” The headliner is Alec Baldwin, who authored the book, "A Promise to Ourselves" in which he shares his very personal story of being a party to a dissolution case, the sometimes unbearable expectations and loss imposed by our system, and the lasting damage the players can do to a family going through this process. He is going to share his experience with you, and the experiences of others who have had to endure the same fate, and through it challenge each of us to not only listen but take the next steps required to make real changes in our profession and in the legal system. Mr. Baldwin generously suggested that we make the event a fund raiser – also revolutionary! We are pleased to announce that the proceeds of the Kickoff will benefit the Legal Aid Foundation.

AUGUST 11, 2011
5:30 - 7:30* pm
*Book signing will take place immediately after the dinner event and will last approximately 1 hour.

THURSDAY,

Marriott City Center Hotel
1701 California Street Denver, CO 80202

I This is akin to an intervention – a hard core look at ourselves and what we and our system have become. I Who else but Alec Baldwin could look us in the eye and tell us how damaging our system has become, what we are doing wrong, and motivate us to make the necessary changes?

KICK-OFF BOOK SIGNING:
Mr. Baldwin has reserved an hour after the dinner for a special book signing event featuring his book "A Promise to Ourselves." 25 of our dinner guests who have pre-purchased his book will be randomly selected to join us in a more intimate setting for the book signing. The 25 participants will be notified of their selection by August 4th.

T

he Pre-Conference Workshop, “Assessment and Treatment of Families When Children are Alienated, Estranged, and/or Resist Contact,” provides an intensive focus on theory, assessment, diagnosis, and research on reasons that children resist contact with a parent. Children resist or refuse contact in high conflict divorcing families for a myriad of reasons including parental alienation, estrangement, and/or other kinds of parenting problems. This workshop will emphasize treatment including guiding principles and a framework for work with these families. The field has moved forward significantly since the days of Gardner, the advent of Kelly and Johnston et al’s work in 2001, to a recent review of the research by Saini, Johnston, Fidler, and Bala (in press). Those things that we have learned in the past over a decade can guide the court, attorneys, mental health professionals, and parents to help children find safe ways to connect or re-connect with parents after the status of their family changes from being intact to divorced.

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP TOPICS:
Assessment and Treatment of Families When Children are Alienated, Estranged, and/or Resist Contact: I The ins and outs of assessment • Without a good assessment and findings, treatment will not work • Pure alienation vs. pure estrangement vs. hybrids • Contextual and individual variables • Gatekeeping: Facilitative, restrictive, protective • The research can teach courts, lawyers, and mental health professionals about how to identify the root causes of a child’s resistance to spend time with a parent or rejection of a parent I The ins and outs of treatment • The importance of safe contact • Guiding principles and the framework for working with the dynamics of alienation and/or estrangement (accountability, buy-in of both the “in” and “out” parent, measurable treatment goals, and case management vs. treatment) • Is alienation a monolithic concept and thus, is there only one treatment for it? And is there only one kind of estrangement and thus, only one kind of treatment for it? • Treatment approaches (Multimodal Family Therapy, dyadic work, structural family therapy, concentrated programs like Overcoming Barriers) • Lessons that the research teaches us about the treatment of families when children are alienated, estranged, and/or resist contact

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ARE STILL AVAILABLE!

FAMILY LAW INSTITUTE
ur goal for the 2011 Institute is to educate, entertain, and challenge our members to join the revolution for change. As part of that, we adopted The Beatles’ song "Revolution" as our theme. In addition to the amazing guitar licks, the words are an inspiration. When we talk about change, we are focusing on inspiring lawyers, judges, and experts to bring back respect and dignity to the legal processes around family issues. We are also focusing on new ways to deal with substantive law issues, such as working around the "double-dip” case law, finding new resources to support imputing income to unemployed executives, and challenging the assumptions and impositions of cookie-cutter 50-50 parenting plans. Also included in the theme of "change" are a few new components of the Family Law Institute. For example, the ever-popular “Hot Topics” are back, but this time they are being presented by judges. We also have more networking opportunities, including a cocktail reception Saturday evening. And, for the first time ever, we are having a “kick-off to the Institute” Thursday evening in Denver.
