“What Are We Really Looking For? Oral Pathology Cases and Concepts” & “Expanded Hygiene – Beyond Just Bugs and Plaque” (6 total CEU”S)
Objectives for Oral Pathology: Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Describe the etiology, clinical appearance and treatment options for various oral pathologic conditions. 2. Discuss the relevance of this knowledge to dental hygienists in the dental hygiene process of care 3. Compare/contrast lesions that can be included in the dentist’s differential diagnosis for each pathologic entity Objectives for Expanded Hygiene: -To review the functions of a registered dental hygienist -To expose the RDH to their role in recognizing occlusal disease and occlusal traumatism -To demonstrate digital occlusion -To review the literature in occlusion -To expose the RDH to TMJ pathology and diagnosis with joint vibration analysis JVA -To expose the RDH to muscle physiology with the use of electromyography EMG -To expose the RDH to Temporo-Mandibular Joint function and health with 3D jaw tracking.

Sherri Lukes, RDH, MS, is an associate professor in the dental hygiene program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the only baccalaureate dental hygiene program in Illinois. She has taught oral pathology there for the past 22 years, as well as Community Oral Health, Multicultural Applied Experience in Dental Hygiene and Advanced Periodontics clinic. Her research has been concentrated in oral pathology, migrant and seasonal farm worker oral health, and issues affecting a range of other underserved groups. She has presented on topics within her areas of expertise at various conferences and continuing education meetings across the country. Passionate about public health issues, Ms. Lukes serves as chair of the Public Health/Access to Care Committee for the Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association. She is currently treasurer and legislative chair for the Southern Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Society. Community service projects include annual mission trips to central Mexico, where accompanied by SIU dental hygiene students, she provides oral health care in area villages. She received the first annual College of Applied Sciences and Arts Community Service award in 2004, School of Allied Health Teacher of the year in 2006, was named an Oral Health Champion by the IFLOSS Coalition and the Illinois Department of Public Health in 2009, and was a recipient of the Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction in 2010.

Robert Benjamin Colt, D.D.S., D.F.A.A.C.P. Dr. Colt is a young, energetic dentist whose experience and knowledge are beyond his years. Dr. Colt, a native of Denver, Colorado, graduated in 2004 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Colt also received his Bachelor of Medical Science from the University of Colorado in 2000. He is a legacy dentist as his father was a dentist and, at one time, the two shared a practice. In addition, Dr. Colt recently finished his residency at the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and is the youngest dentist in the world to have received his Fellowship from the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain.
