Whirl Around Washington – City Tour
Spend time learning the history and architecture of the capital
city through a comprehensive tour of its incredible monuments,
memorials and Federal buildings. As you travel the streets
of Washington D.C., you’ll know that you are in a place of
overwhelming importance. Tall stately columns and wide graceful
steps lead you to the headquarters of government and into the
archives of history. Riding up the gently rolling hills, overlooking
the winding Potomac River, you will pass the marble and granite
building stones of history. Washington reflects the crossroads of
the Old and New Worlds.
Look at the Capitol Building to see the classical styles of Greece and of Italy. Gaze down the National Mall and marvel at the monuments to
America’s great leaders with Washington’s obelisk rising over 500 feet in the sky. Special tour stops include the Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Memorial set along the Cherry Tree Walk, the Iwo Jima Memorial with its famous raising of the flag, and the new World War II Memorial
honoring all who served on both fronts.

Mission Impossible – The International Spy Musem
Today we are off to a top secret D.C. location…International Spy
Museum. We will gain access to the world’s largest collection of
international espionage artifacts ever placed on public display,
over 600 pieces in all. Explore interactive exhibits about disguise,
surveillance, threat analysis, and more. Discover the history of
spying from biblical times to the present day. Your “Mission” will
uncover the stories behind famous men and women considered above
suspicion—and doubly effective as spies. Be surprised by spymasters
from Moses to Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth I to George Washington,
Cardinal Richelieu to Joseph Stalin; all relied on intelligence to be
effective leaders. Track today’s technology back to its sources.
Meet Bond’s villains, uncover their evil schemes, and explore their exotic lairs and weapons in this special exhibit commemorating the 50th
anniversary of the Bond films. The Museum has partnered with EON Productions, the Bond film producers, to showcase over 100 artifacts
from the films—from airships and underground lairs to nuclear weapons and hungry sharks. The exhibit explores how the evildoers and
their plots have changed to reflect their times and how James Bond has influenced the public’s perception of real espionage. Historical
artifacts and documents as well as classic film and audio clips profiling Bond and his adversaries complement the movie props.

home, now known as Hillwood Museum and Gardens, contains
magnificent French and Russian fine and decorative art as well as
acres of lavish gardens.
Inside the columned brick mansion you will see extraordinary
collections of the Russian aristocracy including the 1884 diamond
crown worn at the marriage of Empress Alexandra to Nicholas II, Carl
Faberge’s famous imperial eggs, chalices of gold and carved stones
and an extensive collection of Orthodox and religious icons and art.

Garden with arched bridge and waterfall and an Adirondack rustic cottage with its collection of Native American basketry, pottery,

Papers, Portraits, and Pop Culture – The Newseum
Vsit the world’s most interactive and Washington’s newest
museum, Newseum, a 250,000-square-foot museum dedicated to
the history of news. The seven-level Newseum features fourteen
main exhibition galleries covering five centuries of news history
with up to the second technology and hands on experiences.
Always dreamed of being in front of the newscamera? Perhaps
you would prefer to be behind the scenes, editing? The NBC News
Interactive Newsroom gives you an opportunity to do just that in
the 7,000 square foot interactive gallery. In addition to its fourteen
main exhibition galleries, The Newseum also features a Changing
Exhibits Gallery. In November, 2009 The “G-Men and Journalists”
special exhibit showcases the relationship between the FBI and the media with over 200 artifacts and 300 photographs of top news stories,
including the Unabomber’s cabin and Patty Hearst’s coat. The newest limited-time exhibit, “Manhunt: The 12 Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,”
explores how new developments in journalism and technology came together in the news coverage of Abraham Lincoln’s death and the hunt
for his killer. This experience will prove to be educational, inspirational, and fun.

Wonders of Washington – Art and Architecture
Discover Washington’s unique building heritage by visiting some of
the city’s finest buildings. Start with a tour of the National Building
Museum, the only institution in the US dedicated to American
achievements in architecture, urban planning, construction,
engineering and design. Visit exhibitions such as “The Pension
Building,” created in 1881 to house the government agency that
distributed pension checks to Civil War Veterans.
The Library of Congress, the nation’s oldest federal cultural
institution and the largest library in the world, has 86 million items
on 500 miles of shelves. The frescoes, marble columns, soaring
arches and other interior touches are sure to be as awe-inspiring
as the millions of books, photographs and other important items in the library. One of the important historical items on display is Johann
Gutenberg’s Bible, which was the first real book to be printed using the print techniques he created in the 1450’s.
Finally, the National Gallery of Art’s East Building, whose dramatic “H-shaped” façade invites visitors in to view 20th century masterpieces.
Collections at the gallery include pieces from the early Italian Age and Italian Renaissance, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci
in the Western Hemisphere, and works by Cézanne, Monet, Raphael, Gaugin and many others.

National Parks & Recreation – Shenandoah
Visit Shenandoah National Park including 300 square miles of
the Blue Ridge Mountains in the southern Appalachians. The park
rises above the Virginia Piedmont to its east and the Shenandoah
Valley to its west. Two peaks, Stony Man and Hawksbill, exceed
4,000 feet. The range of elevation, slopes and aspects, rocks and
soils, precipitation, and latitude create a mix of habitats. Tens of
thousands of living creatures make their homes in the park, from
black bear resting beneath rock overhangs, to tiny aquatic insects
darting through cool mountain streams. The park’s many worlds
are fascinating to explore.
Most of Shenandoah’s landscape is forested. In the process of photosynthesis, converting light, water, and minerals into foods, green plants
give off oxygen. From a distance this air-born water creates a faint haze giving the Blue Ridge its name. Hardwood forests dominate the park.
The forests are the result of many disturbances, some measured in geologic time, others in minutes. Remnants of boreal forests remind us
that continental glaciers came near. Strands of barbed wire embedded in trunks mark the edges of former pastures. Uprooted trees show the
path Tropical Storm Fran made in 1996.

Land of the Brave – Exploring Colonial Virgina
Visit George Washington’s “home away from home,” the stately Mt.
Vernon, a beautiful Georgian townhouse with rust red roofs. After
winning the Revolutionary War, Washington returned to his civilian
role as a Virginia farmer. These 40 acres of landscaped grounds
include elaborate greenhouses and a family cemetery. Inside,
view lavishly decorated rooms with furnishings belonging to the
Washingtons.
Next, head to Old Town Alexandria, where in the early 1700’s, the
prominent members of Virginia society were directly connected to
the thriving tobacco industry, as both merchants and planters. A
walk through Old Town takes you past many famous landmarks:
Carlyle House, the “city hall” Market Square, the Federal style Bank of Alexandria, and the 19th Century row houses.
Visit Gadsby’s Tavern, a historic restaurant and museum which is actually two joined buildings: a two story Georgian tavern and a three
story Federal house. When it first opened as the finest public house in the young Capital City, all of the “Founding Fathers” dined here.
Enjoy lunch on your own at one of the many quaint restaurants on King Street and visit the numerous art galleries, including the Torpedo
Factory, home to more than 100 studios and galleries.

What is the Virtual Meeting?
The Virtual Meeting provides attendees with “open access”
to all meeting materials after the Annual Meeting. It includes
postgraduate courses, clinical seminars, lunch seminars,
surgical tutorials, subspecialty sessions, and colloquia lectures.
Presentations can be downloaded and will be synced to the
audio from the meeting session.* This is a great way to capture
all of the information from the meeting even if you were unable
to attend some of the lectures. Take advantage of this special
option today. The Virtual Meeting can be purchased for $199 in
addition to your registration. The option will also be available
onsite but at double the cost.
