Mission to the Dominican Republic

T

By Elsie Walker his past spring, members of the River of Life Ministries (Schooley's Mountain) visited the Dominican Republic. There they shared their faith, and later would see the result of an answered prayer. The River of Life Mission team consisted of its Pastor, Melvin W. Travis, Al Dykstra and Blas Guridy. Joining them was Pastor Anthony Loeffler, of the Solid Rock Evangelistic Association in Florida. For over 36 years, Loeffler has led a music ministry which has touched many inside prison walls. The purpose of the trip was to share the word of God with people in the Dominican Republic. The group visited Santa Domingo and San Pedro. The church had supplied its mission team with 20 Bibles. One member commented that people were so enthusiastic to hear what the missionaries had to say that his voice went hoarse after five days and he found that they could have used twice the number of Bibles supplied. The group ministered in many areas of the country, the poorest of which was a Batay. “This is a place where Haitian immigrants were placed when they came to Santa Domingo for a better life, to work in the sugar cane fields. Instead, they were placed in this isolated community away from everyone, in terrible conditions,” said Travis. That Batay had not changed much since

members of the mission team had seen it in the fall of 2007. The housing was described as “dismal” , with the people living under unsanitary conditions A goal of the trip was to establish a discipleship program, starting small and building it up. The team met with the local missionary, a doctor and in Major in the Dominican Army who had first introduced them to the Batay. Working together, they started the plan to train the first members of the discipleship program. The New Jersey missionaries found in the Dominican Republic people anxious for their prayers….and that brought at least one miracle. The last night of their mission trip, Travis and another member were sitting in a hotel restaurant when a waitress asked if they would come to her sister in-law's home and pray for her. The sister-in-law, who was dying of intestinal cancer at age 37, had four young children. So, the duo waited for the waitress to get off work and went with her, her sister, and the rest of the mission team to the sister-in-law's home. There the team prayed for healing. Now, in talking about the woman that had cancer, Travis emphasizes the word “had”. “I said 'had', because on our return trip [the next month]…. this woman was healed…,” Travis shared. Travis said that yet another trip would be made to the Dominican Republic, with a team bringing medical supplies and educational material.

Although planning began in May of 2006, rehabilitation from a torn ACL forced Matthew to delay the start of the project. Nevertheless, with the help of scouts from the troop, friends, and family, the project was completed on three hot weekends in July and August of 2007. He finished the last details of his application over the next few months and passed his Board of Review on December 11, 2007. Matthew is currently a senior at West Morris Central High School, where he has earned varsity letters in Soccer and Ice Hockey, as well as participating in Lacrosse. He served as an Assistant Captain of the Ice Hockey team during the 2007-2008 season. He has also been an active member of the Math League. Honors and awards bestowed upon him while at West Morris include induction into National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and High Honor Roll. After graduation from West Morris Central High School, Matthew will attend Northeastern University as a member of the Honors program and a Dean's Scholar, in pursuit of a degree in Business Administration.

Infertile or Just Imbalanced?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) including acupuncture is a groundbreaking alternative approach to enhancing fertility - on its own or to optimize the latest Western-based assisted reproductive technology (ART). Thousands of women each year (approximately 1 in 5 - 6 couples) are turning to some form of assisted reproductive technology in the hopes of having a baby, which many scientists, ethicists and policymakers now believe safety concerns are not keeping pace with the rapid growth in the industry according to ABC News. Aggressive infertility treatments used widely in the United States have about a 20 to 26 percent success rate (74 - 80 % failure rate) while a woman is in her early to mid 30’s and only a 6 to 10 percent success rate (90 - 94% failure rate) if a woman is in her early 40’s. A recent study shows that when traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is combined with in-vitro fertilization (IVF), the odds of conception and healthy pregnancy increase by as much as 60 percent. Let us not forget that the science of ART is still in its infancy compared to Chinese Medicine which has been helping women conceive for over 2,000 years. According to the peer reviewed literature, a woman’s fertility peaks by age 27 and by age 35 her chances of conceiving are reduced by 50%. By age 40, a woman’s chances of conceiving are down to 20%. Today fertility is complicated by a poor diet and stress, coupled with deferred childbearing and elevated environmental pollutants which act as endocrine disruptors are depleting the reproductive system of both men and women, creating the new "infertility epidemic." In actuality, according to Chinese Medicine, very few women are really infertile, with the exception of women with mechanical/physical blockage. Most women are just imbalanced and once balance is restored, a woman’s body then does what it was naturally designed to do, "create life." A woman’s innate ability is to bear children just like an acorn‘s innate ability is to become a tall oak tree. Just using the word infertility, in and of itself, sends such a strong negative connotation and feeling that it works against any woman trying to conceive. Woman undergoing ART are constantly bombarded with negativity from being told their too old or their eggs are too old or they have poor ovarian function to hearing their only hope is donor eggs. If a person hears this negativity enough they ultimately believe what they hear and become what they believe. Conversely, Traditional Chinese Medicine bombards women with hope because it holds that a woman’s body must be gently nourished and encouraged to bear fruit. Chinese Medicine Practitioners together with their patients work to rebalance the hormones and intricate energies that occur each month, causing a woman to produce a healthy egg capable of fertilization and to prepare her uterine lining to receive that egg. ART has given hope to many couples who would otherwise never be able to bear children. However, the physical, emotional and financial burden of these treatments are high. Many couples deplete their entire savings, or mortgage their homes for IVF cycles, which are currently approximately $10,000.00 per cycle. Fortunately, the low success rate of Western ART has caused both women and their ART doctors to seek out other alternatives. In addition, many women want a healthier, more holistic approach to enhancing their fertility. For these women and ART doctors, Chinese Medicine, including Acupuncture has shown dramatic improvement. According to a study conducted at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, acupuncture worked as well as the drug clomiphene in inducing pregnancy. Joan was 40 years old and was diagnosed with unexplained infertility. This means that her hormone levels were normal and there was no physical reason why she could not conceive. Her ART physician put her on a course of hormone injections to stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs, which were then harvested and allowed to incubate, then mixed with her husband’s sperm. After the eggs developed for 2-5 days, they were evaluated and implanted into Joan’s uterus. Now the torturous 10-14 day wait begins. On day 13, Joan was informed she was not pregnant. Joan went through 4 more heart wrenching IVF cycles, ($40,000.00) only to be told by her doctor, her only hope of conceiving was donor eggs. Since Joan nor her husband were ready for donor eggs, she decided to try Acupuncture. Joan was assessed by her Acupuncturist who believed she had an energy imbalance in the meridians leading to her reproductive organs. In TCM for ovaries and uterus to be functioning properly, the kidneys, spleen and liver must be in balance as these meridian systems are intricately linked to reproduction. Chinese medicine doesn’t stimulate hormones like Western ART, rather it restores a body’s natural balance so that a woman’s hormones balance themselves out while restoring health and harmony to the entire body. Joan was instructed to make some changes to her diet, have weekly acupuncture sessions and take Chinese herbal supplements. Joan was delighted when she became pregnant naturally after several months of treatment with Chinese medicine at a cost of only $2,200.00. There are countless other stories of women conceiving either naturally with TCM or as an adjunctive therapy with ART. In closing, I personally believe to advocate vehemently for using one kind of medicine over another is foolish. The best way to conceive a child may be Western medicine, Eastern medicine or a combination of both. Become educated and then listen to your mind, body and heart. Christine Northrup, M.D., the author of "Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom," writes, "When we’re willing to listen to our bodies and begin trusting ourselves as much as we trust outer authorities, all the rules change, and so does our biology. Statistics no longer apply to us. We enter the realm of miracles and undreamed-of possibilities." Deborah Waddell completed her Master’s level degree from the Eastern School of Acupuncture in Mont-clair, NJ. She received her Acupuncture Certification from the New Jersey Board of of Medical Examiners (C.A.) and from the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists (Dipl. Ac.). Deborah also has a degree in Biology and Chemistry with summa cum laude Honors from Felician College.

She currently remains one of the most active residents that live at the Community and continually urges others to do the same by leading hiking and biking jaunts. Morrison is not only one of the most active female residents among the Heath Village residents, but moreover among many people of her age, in general. Morrison's love of outdoor sporting started with the Union County Hiking Club in 1984, which added

The amazing MaryDell Morrison. to her adoration of biking too. She's been biking a good portion of her life, but only seriously since 1988. The freedom of the long road ahead and the adventure and excitement of traveling to many different places across the United States and other countries on her bike excursions gets her adrenaline pumping. On March 12, 1999, Morrison was the oldest of 28 women to bike from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida - a total trek of 3200 miles in 62 days; Morrison completed a total of 2911 miles of the trip. This was an amazing feat at her age, but it was not to be the last. Most recently in May, Morrison took a second, long bike journey riding from Pittsburgh, PA towards Washington, DC. She and her fellow riders planned to complete as much of this 300 mile trip as weather allowed. Along with Morrison were three friends including Carolyn and Jim Canfield from West Milford, NJ and Mae Deas from Scotch Plains, NJ, who are all members of the Union County Hiking Club as well. Their plan of attack for this trip was to have three riders on the trail while the fourth moved the van to a meeting spot and then the van driver often biked back to meet the other three. The total distance covered before bad weather and their tight schedules ended the ride at just over 200 miles total; each rider biked between 150 and 180 miles. The first leg of their trip started out wet, however brightened as they traveled along the Great Allegheny Passage with its beautiful wooded regions and view of the Youghioheny (the Yougi for short) River. Their bikes and bodies were muddy, but their spirit was strong as they moved forward on their trip. Along the way, the nature show dazzled them where they caught glimpses of everything from Bluebirds to Baltimore Orioles to Scarlet Tanagers, as well as wild turkeys and red foxes, just to name a few. The ride on one special day was a very gradual uphill ride to get to the tunnel crossing the eastern Continental Divide and then across the nearby MasonDixon Line. The four adventurers had the thrill of the long downhill ride speeding along the trail towards Cumberland, Maryland, where the C and O trail begins, a historic old town with trains going right through the center. They took a break and enjoyed the history by visiting the C&O Canal Museum. One day they woke to rain and high humidity and decided to spend the morning touring the Antietam National Battlefield and, afterwards, started their drive home. It was another trip in Morrison's journal of trips that she will not soon forget. Ms. Morrison is now 80 and does not intend to halt her love of the outdoors, hiking or biking, anytime soon. She was quoted prior to her trip from San Diego to St. Augustine as saying, “I would encourage all senior citizens to try to remain active in their later years. You can always do more than you think is possible. I've become a role model for many of my friends and I want everyone to know that retirement can be wonderful.” Doesn't that sum it up? She looks forward to her next travel escapade and hopes that she can continue to persuade seniors to be all they can be in their golden years.

Harlin’s Point of View....

A

by Harlin Parker s my neighbor, Tom Lotito, knows, I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for him. I applaud him for the time and effort he expends to make his views known. Healthy democracy requires that we hear a wide variety of views and opinions. I know Tom agrees with me on that, and I believe it’s one of the reasons he suggested I write this “view from the left” column, something that I actually enjoy doing as I look to provide the common sense viewpoint of someone who considers himself a Liberal; a Liberal with a strong Libertarian streak. So let me answer Tom’s question from last month, “What was Harlin Parker’s column about…?” “Money.” Well, yes, it was. Much of what I write about, and care about, concerns money. Our money. We, The People. Left wing, right wing, Democrat, Republican, we all share the same desire to improve our standard of living and to provide for our families as best we can. Unless we’re going back to trading beads, we’ll continue to use money in order to purchase our homes, our food, and all the things we need and want in our lives. That includes the costs of operating our government. Clearly we all agree we need government. Not even radical right wing Republicans, who seemingly spend so much time and energy denouncing “government,” advocate for its abolition. So the question really is about how we structure and pay for our government so as to provide the services we need and want. Tom, as so many Republicans continually do, decries that most feared phrase, “tax and spend.” I actually had visions of Tom wearing a tri-cornered hat, on horseback, on a midnight ride down Schooley’s Mountain Road warning the good people of Washington Township . “Socialist, wealth redistributing, power consolidating, land grabbing Democrats are coming! Beware!” Tom, don’t panic. I’m looking to save your money, not take it. “Tax and spend” is a hackneyed, stale, phrase that just doesn’t scare people the way it used to. You guys are going to have to find something else to scare people with. Tax and spend merely means that we pay as we go. Pay now for what we’re spending now. And let's be honest. For far too long, from the state to the local level, we’ve been not only spending too much but, even more ominously, obligating ourselves to spending even more. You want to be scared? What’s really frightening is the amount of debt this state is in. We’ve been borrowing and spending. We’ve obligated ourselves to future spending with no money in the bank to pay for those obligations. State debt. County debt. Municipal debt. Add it up. Please, don’t even try to do it in your head. You’ll need a very big calculator because we are talking tens of billions of dollars. Not all borrowing is bad. I think we can all agree that if we’re going to build something like a bridge (a capital expenditure) that will last for 50 years or so, borrowing money to build it makes sense. Unfortunately, when it comes to New Jersey’s public debt, state, county and municipal (and don’t forget the debts of all the quasi-governmental agencies, commissions, etc.) way too much of it involves what are called non-capital expenditures. We’re borrowing money to pay pensions and health care costs. We’re borrowing money to pay maintenance and operating costs. That’s ludicrous. So yes, Tom, my column was, as is this one, about money. I believe that we, the people, in New Jersey pay an awful lot of money for our govContinued on next page

Tom’s Point of View... Who is Barack Obama?

O

by Tom Lotito beautiful for spacious skies."We are a nation that has a government, not the other way around, and this makes us special among the nations of the earth". For amber waves of grain. "Our government has no power except that granted it by the people".For purple mountain majesties. "It is time to check and reverse the growth of government which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed. Above the fruited plain! Can we solve the problems that confronting us?" God shed his grace on thee. "The answer is an unequivocal, emphatic, Yes." And crown thy good with brotherhood. "It is time to reawaken this industrial giant, to get government back with in it's means, and to lighten out punitive tax burden and these will be our first priorities, and on these principals there will be no compromise". From sea to shining to sea. The words in bold, America the Beautiful, the words that follow are quotations of Ronald Regan from his fist day in office, as he faced a Jimmy Carter economy with 18 % interest rates, soaring gas prices and a recession. We know the rest of the story, under Regan interest rates were lowered, gas prices stabilized and our economy has had 28 years of unprecedented prosperity. "As for the enemies of freedom those who are potential adversaries, they will be reminded that peace is the highest aspiration of the American people. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will not surrender for it, now or ever. When action is required to preserve our national security, we will act. We will maintain sufficient strength to prevail if need be, knowing that if we do so, we have the best chance of never having to use that strength. Above all we must realize that no arsenal or no weapon in the arsenal's of the world is so formidable as the will and moral courage, of free men and women, it is a weapon our adversaries in today's world do not have, it is a weapon that we as Americans do have. Let that be understood by those who practice terrorism and prey upon their neighbors." Continued on page 18

Harlin’s Point of View....
Continued from previous page ernment operations. In my opinion, way too much, in a small state that is top heavy with government. 566 municipalities cost us too much. But don’t panic, Tom. I do not advocate just one big municipality. No, I don’t. I admit that I don’t honestly know what the optimum number would be. 250? I’m not sure, but there are people studying the subject as we speak. I think it’s sort of like obscenity. Hard to define but I know it when I see it. And I know 566 municipalities is, well, obscene. Don’t agree? Don’t think 566 municipalities are costly and unwieldy? How about a case in point? Let’s take email. Yes, email. I’m a big believer in open government. When it comes to our government, at all levels, information should be readily and easily available to the public. Sunshine, as they say, is a great disinfectant. While there is much information the government must keep private, the truth is that the vast majority of what government does is, by definition, public. And these days, like all of us, people in government communicate by email. Government emails have been in the news lately. Those emails sent and received amongst elected officials and public employees are (with some exceptions) public records. As we all now know, New Jersey’s municipalities (all of ‘em) have essentially failed to maintain and make these emails readily available to the public. I’ve been spending hours contacting state, county and local officials on this subject. Incredibly, as far as the League of Municipalities is concerned, when I asked if it was ok with them that, as things now stand, each municipality must reinvent the wheel when it comes to how to deal with this issue, the answer was an unequivocal “yes.” Yes? Here in Washington Township, a small town, we have good, capable well meaning elected officials and township employees. Our own Bob Kelly and Committeeman Kevin Walsh have worked on this email retention issue. A possible solution, one yet unproven to actually work, would cost approximately $13,000 or so to install plus another $2000 or so per year to operate. Many municipalities are much bigger than Washington Township. If you start to do the math (multiply by at least 566) your head will start to hurt. As it is, left on their own, municipalities will come up with dozens of different “solutions” which will cost much, much more than would an integrated system for use by all municipalities. And just as importantly, only an integrated system will allow for a comprehensive ability to search for information. We’re talking about the heart of open government: information easily and readily available to the public. So yes, Tom, I’m talking about money. I’m talking about spending less money to get more actual value for the people, those of us who are paying the bills. Liberals have always stood for open, accessible government. Leaving something like email retention up to the whims of each municipality guarantees that public information will continue to be hidden from the public. Oh, that’s right. I forgot. Home rule. Who is Barack Obama?
Continued from page 16 These are the words of Ronald Reagan as he warned our enemies about terrorism. After Jimmy Carter's failed attempts to release hostages taken from the American Embassy in Iran back in 1979. The hostages were released upon the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, because the Iranians knew that Ronald Regan would take the actions necessary to secure the release of the hostages if they did not comply.Jimmy Carter's weak foreign policies in the mid east destroyed the balance of power in the mid east, creating a terrorist state in Iran when the Ayatollah's took over. Indirectly Jimmy Carter's foreign policy is responsible for the spreading of terrorism and the rise of radical Islam in today's world. "No, No, No, Not God Bless America God Damn America!", Barack Hussein Obama's pastor. "You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," And, "It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." This is Barack Obama when he speaks to elite liberals who have a hatred for, God fearing, hard working, Americans who spend their spare time hunting and taking care of their families. "I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mothers race" "There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And White. Barack . I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction" Obama from his book audacity of hope.Etc ad nauseam. The next time you are in your yard or on your front porch and you feel a cool wind blow across your face remember this: That wind that you feel was created from the founding fathers rolling over in their graves. It frustrates me to think that there are people right here in our country who will vote, lay it all on the line for a candidate for president who has said these things. Who is Barack Obama? Does he love America? Is he a racist? Is he really a Christian? Has America's fortunes shifted? There are functional people who are in some frame of mind that they think by supporting Obama they are doing God's work? Is our country headed for darker days ahead? Will a president Obama (God Forbid) protect our country in a time of war? In comparison to Ronald Regan I would have to say that Obama sounds more like a disgruntled Carpet American than a patriotic American. Yes I am saying that Sale a party, a people, a nation that would make a man like Starting at Obama president is a nation that is decline. When Obama was asked about Iran launching missiles that went about sq. yd. 1200 miles( far enough to hit Israel), he replied from largely prepared marks" What this underscores is the Carpet, 6 lb. Pad & need for ... a clear policy that is putting the burden on Iran Installation to change behavior. And frankly, we just have not been able to do that the last several years, partly because we're not engaged in direct diplomacy." Direct diplomacy? Talking to our enemies? Do you see the contrast to Ronald Regan? Who was not afraid to defend his nation from terrorism. If you are considering voting for Barack Obama consider this: Can America afford to have a president who will be afraid to stand up to our enemies? If you believe you are not in danger from terrorism remember this: There was an eight and one half year period between the first World Trade Center bombing and the horrific 911. In other words the terrorist are still out there waiting and planning. Are you willing to take the chance with an Obama presidency? The whole point of stopping Iran is to stop them from getting nuclear weapons, they will threaten Israel, and make it available to terrorists, who would bring nuclear waste(dirty bomb) or a suit nuke to American shores. Can you live with that? Than I ask you, to go on line and read the quotes that Obama has made, get past the slogans and the emotions, and before you vote, find out, who is Barack Obama? Agree? Disagree? .
