One weekend this summer during those continuously 90 to 110 degree days, I decided to take a trip “u p North” to find some relief. Having family I
could stay with, I chose “up North” Kentucky. I forgot that their antebellum home was not equipped w ith air conditioning and the 4 bedrooms were all
upstairs - but hey, the sofa in a downstairs room with a window unit was wonderful!
We ventured into Cincinnati to see Menopause, the Musical . Very entertaining, even for her husband. The setting is Bloomingdale’s in New York City,
with 4 women in varying stages of menopause. The music consists of hits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s using new lyrics. For instance, when it came to
husbands not showing as much interest in romance, a
mechanical device was alluded to and the songs were Good
Vibrations and Only You.
My hostess mentioned that if I planned to leave early
Monday morning, she would go to Card Club at noon. I
thought this a little presumptuous, but have learned that once
you’ve passed 53, everyone says what’s on their mind and
(possibly) reflects on how it sounded at a later time.
I asked a little more about Card Club and found it’s a
group of 8 who formed in the 60’s to play cards. They haven’t
played cards in years, but Card Club still meets once a month.
It reminded me of my tennis group. We formed in the 70’s
and played tennis. I think 2 still play tennis, but they’re not my
tennis group. My tennis gr oup still meets almost monthly and
we call ourselves “The Tennis Group”. This year we lost our first
member when Mary Francis Willock passed away.
It was nice to realize we still share the same humor,
feel comfortable saying what’s on our minds, and even
have a circle of friends with a name that now just means
“close friends”.

By Belinda Saltzman
One of the things I love about FLAIR is the
opportunity to meet and interview fascinating
women. Deborah Hirsch is no exception.
On a hot, sunny day in July, I drove to Russellville,
Kentucky to have lunch at Ariella, a new restaurant
just off the downtown square. I had no idea that I
would be treated like royalty, fed like a queen,
and would leave having made a new friend. But,
let me say, ALL customers at Ariella have the
same experience!
I asked Deborah, “How did you end up in
Russellville, Kentucky from Atlantic City, New Jersey?”
Deborah and her husband wanted a “holiday
home” that would be centrally located for family
members to gather at holidays and vacations. In
2006, they found a historic plantation home (pre-Civil
War) in Russellville that was perfect.
Each time family or friends visited, they com-
mented on the need for a “fine eatery” in the town,
and they all agreed that Deborah should capitalize
on her background (her family was in the deli
business for 22 years). She started looking for a
building to renovate for a restaurant. Deborah says
she has an innate ability to see “what can be”
instead of “what is there”. Her vision was for a casual
dining bistro on the first floor with fine dining on the
second floor.
In December 2010, Ariella opened for business.
When you walk into the restaurant, the first word
that comes to mind is “charming”. The seating is
comfortable, the decorating is tasteful, and the
ambience is pure southern hospitality. A point of
interest is the vintage 1870 linotype printing press
beautifully encased in its own glass room. The
building was formerly occupied by Barrett’s Printing
for many years and the printing press was “at home”
there. Deborah, an avid historian, wanted a piece of
the building’s history to remain.
Now about the food...Deborah’s standard for a
dining experience is: fresh, beautiful, tasty food.
Deborah enthusiastically says, “We make everything
fresh every day!” All food is prepared with the finest,
top quality ingredients. Even the breads and pastas
are made fresh in house each day. The Chef,
Joshua Aaron, creates new menu items regularly
that delight the palate.
The bistro menu includes appetizers, soups, sand-
wiches, salads, and heavenly desserts. The entrees
include fresh seafood, juicy steaks, and world famous
crab cakes. At lunch, I was served a sampling of
these luscious choices.
The main dining room upstairs is beautifully
appointed with sparkling chandeliers, quaint and
comfortable banquette seating along one wall, and
beautiful art adorning the walls. The room is also
available for corporate and private party events.
Now about the “heart”...Deborah visits with each
diner. She knows her customers by name, whose wife
just had surgery, whose husband is ill, who has family
visiting from out of town. She knows what her
“regulars” favorite dishes are. She is “involved” as
their friend.
It is easy to see why Ariella
would be a “first choice”
restaurant once you’ve
experienced the sensational
food and the exceptional
hospitality!

As Christmas is slowly rounding the
corner our thoughts start to turn to the
act of giving and receiving. Tied to the
fine art of gift giving is the even finer art
of gift wrap.
I have always thought of packaging
as part of the gift. A precursor to what
wonders , (or let’s be realistic,
disappointment) I am about to unwrap.
Some gifts so pretty, and thoughtfully
wrapped that it hurts a little to see them opened.
Some gift so stunning due to their simplicity.
Just the easy, effortlessness of a simple ribbon on
a pretty paper.
Then there
are the gifts that
are wrapped
with such careful
personalization
that you know
who it is for with
out even looking
at the “to” and
“from”.
Of course, there is
everyone’s favorite: The
gift wrapped in a gift,
gift. Two gifts, one thank you note! Kinda makes it feel
like three gifts.
And for the most clever of wrappers there is the
found objects version. A little bit of this and a little bit of
that added to one thing or another coming together in
a stunning ensemble.
No matter what is inside, a well wrapped gift always
feels a little more special and thoughtful. Presentation is
everything after all.
Regardless of your style, creativity level or resources, slow down this year.
Enjoy the season and all that it entails. Buy fewer gifts, but wrap the ones you
have with more thought and love.
After all, it truly is the thought that counts.

Dear Sheila:
I moved into a new neighborhood a
couple of years ago. None of us have young children and
the people don’t seem very friendly. I’ve invited some over, but
they don’t even return my call with a thanks or no thanks. Does
this mean they’re unfriendly - should I give up? Is it OK to wave
at them? --One Friendly Neighbor
Dear Friendly:
I certainly wouldn’t give up! This is your home, where you spend
a great deal of time, and you want to be happy there! Do you have
a dog? If not, get one and walk him around your neighborhood —
great conversation starter with anyone who’s outside. You can
also invite everyone over for a grilling out party outside in warm
weather, and see if that works. If these fail, there are lots of
realtors in town!
Dear Sheila:
My husband wants to celebrate our 25th anniversary
by spending a week at a resort with nude beaches. I’m
uncomfortable with this but he says I’m a prude. Should I
agree to go? --Can’t Bear It All
Dear Bear It:
Evidently, he has something that he’s proud of, and wants to show
it off? How about 1 day on the nude beach, and you can wear a
suit, and the rest of the week on a “clothed” beach? After all,
marriage is all about compromise.
Dear Sheila:
I have an opportunity to be on the TV show The
Bachelor , I’m really nervous and don’t know if I can take
such a chance for a broken heart. What should I do?

At 10:45 p.m., when most have forgotten the stress of their
jobs, Sergeant Donitka Kay is just beginning hers.
Sgt. Kay works the 10:45 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at the Bowling
Green Police Department. She combats crime each night,
hopeful and stern, with her satellite radio playing low in the
background.
Kay’s mother said she knew from the beginning her daughter
would be a cop.
“I have always had an obsession with the cop car,” Kay said.
As a kid, she would pull people over on her bike and write fake
traffic and accident reports. Now that she is older and faces
real danger every day, she is sure to always call her parents on
her way to work, ensuring them of her safety.

Your mind and your instincts just seem to take over,” she says.
Kay has been a police officer for eight years. As a sergeant,
she is responsible for the lives of ten officers each shift. She is
passionate about protecting the people of Bowling Green,
so she demands that things get done, and that they get
done right.
When dealing with civilians, Kay is friendly and unassuming.
She looks for the light in people. But she is fierce, never letting
her guard down.
Although it will be challenging at times, once she has a family
of her own, Kay is dedicated to serving her community and
police department for many years. Sergeant Donitka Kay
is stopped by nothing.
She says it best: “This is something that gets in your blood.”

all that he encounters. But he loved Gunther.
He would run from across the yard and dive into Gunther, knocking him
down. The two were an odd pair, but they adored one another, being sure
to always take care of the other. They complemented each other
perfectly.
The older I got, the more I fell in love with that dog. Gunther always
knew when someone in our family was upset. He would put his tail
down and stay close by. It was as if he could understand whatever hurt I
felt. The first time a boy broke my heart, Gunther never left my side,
licking my face, being sure to wipe away my tears, the only way he
knew how.
When I went to college, Gunther would go sit by my bedroom door
thinking that somehow I maybe hadn’t left. My mom would have to
open the door and let him look around, so that he would know I wasn’t
there. I guess sometimes it’s impossible to believe something until you
see it for yourself. When I would come home on the weekends, I started
noticing his age. He lost a lot of weight and he couldn’t hear us when we
called his name. Up until his very last days, he remained as gentle and
kind as the day we first got him. And I loved him even more.
Gunther is gone now and my heart is filled with a hole that is just his
size. He died when he was 14. It was the summer after my Junior year of
college. It was a summer of change. I felt as though my childhood had
been laid to rest in a way. The loyal dog who always seemed to remain
suddenly didn’t anymore. When something seems so
anchored in your life, you forget that it knows how
to move, to leave. Sometimes when I’m home I
forget that he won’t come slowly walking into the
room I’m in, his big brown eyes, clouded with
cataracts, staring up at me. Or I forget that I will
never again hear the clicking of his claws on our
hardwood floor. But, I know that memory is a
powerful thing. It connects us to a world different
than our own. And, Gunther is more than a
memory. He filled my life with more love than I
could ever imagine. And when I close my eyes I
see him smiling, hopping like a white bunny
through our backyard. I see him sleeping, his
belly on the cold, kitchen floor. I can feel the weight of his tiny
body in my arms and the twinge in my heart that hurts in his absence.
Happiness arrived at my door in the form of my first dog the summer
before I went into second grade. His name was Gunther and he was my
best friend. He was 4 months old, 12 pounds, and covered in curly, white
fur (think ringlets!). My mom and step-dad gave him to me for my
seventh birthday. He ended up being on clearance at the pet store because
he was a Bichon Frise and had crooked teeth. Since Bichons are often
show dogs, crooked teeth are something you want to steer away from
when buying within the breed. They said he sat in a cage alone in the pet
store, getting bigger and towering over the other puppies waiting for a
family to love him, my family in particular; I am sure of it. I imagined
him anxiously wagging his tail every time someone walked
past him, ignoring him. I now feel indebted to
each person who didn’t choose him
because they only brought him
closer to us.
We knew immediately that he had to be ours. I adored his crooked teeth.
To me, he was perfect and I fell in love with him as soon as they brought
him home.
I was an only child and, for a while, Gunther was an only dog. He
gave me a friendship unlike anything I knew. Right after we got him, we
moved from Bowling Green to Memphis, Tennessee. I didn’t know
anyone there, so Gunther made sure to always keep me company. When
I would do homework, he would lay on top of my books or the paper I
was writing on as if to say, “Hey, look at me!” I remember once being
outside with a magnifying glass attempting to solve
some mystery I deemed important, and
Gunther was right there beside me, just
wanting to be close.
As soon as I saw him, I wanted to name him
Snowball. Fortunately, my mother quickly
objected and we decided upon Gunther which
means “German warrior.” The funny thing is,
Gunther was far from a warrior. He was the most
docile creature I have ever met in my life. The
summer after I graduated high school, we got a 3
month old Daschund, Griffin, so that Gunther
wouldn’t be lonely when I left for college in the
fall. Griffin, you should know, can be likened to a
tornado. Aggressive, overwhelming, destructive to

How Soon Can
I Re-Gift This?
Gifting tips for the idea challenged
he family is assembled around the Christmas tree. The gifts are piled high and
resplendent in their sparkly glory. The anxiety is palpable. Pressure mounts.
What do I say when I open a bomb gift? How will I control the look on my face?
Why must this gifting thing be so public? Will my gifts hit the mark?
SIX TIPS FOR THE GIVER AND THE GIFTED
1. Ask your gift target for a wish list during a non-gifting season. Encourage
fantasy gifts, selfish gifts, outrageous gifts, unconventional gifts, etc. Prepare
your list as an example for the person. These lists are always more productive
during a season free from gift expectations.
2. The Golden Rule instructs us to “Do unto others as you would have them
do unto you.” The Platinum Rule instructs us to “Do unto others as they
would have you do unto them”. Remember this is not YOUR gift. Notice
what the person enjoys. What do they do in their free time? When does
the face brighten? When does the energy lift?
3. Pleasure looks different to different people. Someone who travels
frequently would not long for airline tickets. However, for one who is
place bound, airline tickets would be a welcome treat. It might force that
accountant to take some time off for “forced fun”. An adventurer may want
the gift of your permission to go on a jaunt. A people person may most
enjoy a gift in his or her name to a meaningful cause or charity.
4. As our reading tastes vary by personality type, your safest bet would be
to give a gift certificate to a book seller. Perhaps an electronic book reader
would be valued. The strategic visionaries prefer books about philosophy
and science. The “people” persons generally appreciate self help books or
relationship books. The sequential, organized, responsible person may want
a biography or a history. The action-seeking adventurer will probably not
want a book, period.
5. Brainstorm forward for gift ideas. Think about spring activities, such as yard work, golf,
gardening, Harley riding, exploring nature, etc. Then think summer, such as water sports,
picnics, travel, swimming, etc. For autumn, think about cooking implements, spa treatments,
feathering your nest in some comfortable way, a fire pit, etc. Then consider winter and its
pleasures. DVDs, board games, fireplace equipment, Wii games can bring a family together
and provide lasting memories.
6. The last tip is a gift for you, the reader. What NOT to say when opening a gift; “Why did
you give me this thing?” “What do you expect me to do with this?” And the worst, “I don’t
want this.”
Every gift deserves a two part response; acknowledgement of the gift and the giver. Even if you
receive an ugly, unwanted, useless item you say, “Oh, nice,” or if it is awful, “How interesting”,
then you say, “How nice of you” or “Thank You” or “I appreciate your thoughtfulness.”
T
Happy Gifting!

A young man “on top of the world” personally and professionally
was tragically injured in an ATV race accident that left him paralyzed
from the waist down.
The accident was life changing but not life shattering for this
resilient man.
Jeremiah started racing ATVs at age 14 in 1995. What began as
fun riding on weekends with cousins and friends in the Anna
community developed into competitive ATV sport racing. Jeremiah
entered his first official race in 1995. The next year, 1996, he won his
first of 3 National ATV Championships and so began an illustrious ATV
racing career.
By 2005 he was sponsored by Suzuki and touring the race circuit
as a professional. At the end of the 2006 season, his career as a racer
came crashing down with the accident.
His recovery process after the accident reflects his meteoric
championship rise to the top. He entered Frazier Rehabilitation in
Louisville, Ky. 10 days after the accident and subsequent surgeries.
Where most patients have to stay for weeks of physical and
occupational therapy, Jeremiah set records for learning skills to be
independent. Within 2 weeks he had conquered the techniques
necessary for being independent in a wheelchair. So, with his positive,
“can do” attitude, he left the rehab center and resumed his life and
his career in the industry he loves, ATV racing.
Jeremiah has worked actively as a consultant in the ATV racing
world, first for Suzuki and now DWT (Douglas Wheel Technology),
which includes training, track side support, and the promotion of
sponsor products. He also runs a school for young riders, teaching
the fundamentals of racing and coaching them to be winners!
It has been 5 years since the accident and, even though Jeremiah
is still confined to a wheelchair with paralysis, he does not seem
handicapped. He talks about keeping up with mowing and
maintaining his 83 acre farm, attending ATV races as a consultant,
running his ATV school, and currently working at Paul’s ATV to learn
the ins and outs of selling
and servicing ATVs. He
has plans for the future to
own and operate his own
ATV store.
Jeremiah has tackled
every aspect of his life
with a positive, “I can do
this” attitude. He says,
“it takes you longer, but
you find a way.”
Thinking ahead about
any situation assures
that he won’t put
himself in a position to
get “stuck” as he so
aptly puts it.
This man is an
inspiration to all. He
is a “life engineer”
who thinks, “HOW can I get this done?”,
then comes up with a way to do it!

The 411 on Wine brought to You by Shenanigans Wine & Spirits
It’s time to light the fireplace and great
smelling seasonal candles. Time for
pumpkin pie, candies, and hot apple cider.
Fall is here, and old man Winter is right
around the corner. That means lots of
shopping and spending time with friends
and family. Whether you drink to have fun,
or drink to tolerate your in-laws, I have the
perfect wine for the upcoming season.
337 Cabernet is a wine born in France,
but raised in California. This wine gets its
name from the number assigned by the
French to identify the cloning process for
the vine that produces the specific types of
grapes they pursue in order to make a wine
have a particular taste profile.
The vines for the 337 Cabernet are born
in the Bordeaux region in France, but they
thrive in the soil and climate of the Lodi
region in California. The result is a wine of
bold flavor, a bit of spice and dark berries,
but soft on the palate. A perfect wine
going into the colder months!
337 Wine Cellars also offers a 181 Merlot,
446 Chardonnay, and 667 Pinot Noir. All
three are luscious tasting wines with bold
flavors and balanced taste profiles. All
should range in the retail price of $12.99
to $14.99, but you can get these wines
at Shenanigans Wine and Spirits for
$10.99 each!
So, grab your blanket and a glass,
whatever your mood, 337 Wine Cellars has
a vine for you!
For more information on 337 wines,
please visit their website http://
www.337wine.com
Casandra Spears, owner of Shenanigans Wine & Spirits, has a marketing degree from Western
Kentucky University and is very educated in drinking wine with seven years of experience doing so.
Casandra is also available at both Shenanigans locations in Bowling Green and Lexington, KY. If you

Chardonnay
exhibits appealing
aromas of golden
delicious apples,
apricots and
pineapple. Medium
bodied with a creamy
mid palate this delightful
wine offers flavors of
peach, coconut, and hints
of toasty vanilla spice. 446
Chardonnay can be enjoyed
on its own or with grilled
shellfish, light pasta entrees or
with curry dishes.
337 Cabernet Sauvignon delivers
concentrated flavors that ignite the senses.
337 delivers a bold, but luscious wine with
bursts of spice and blackberry. The 337
clone featured is renowned for lacking
the herbal and veggie characteristics
that can detract from the Cabernet
Sauvignon grape. Enjoy with a
hearty steak, roast pork,
barbecued ribs, rich cheeses,
pasta with red sauce, pizza, or just
on its own.
181 Merlot is a lavish
expression of classic
Bordeaux-style Merlot,
bursting with plush tannins
and sumptuous notes of
black cherry, vanilla,
stone fruit and toast.
Flavors of currant and
spicy cedar end with
a lingering, luxurious
finish. 181 i s a vivid
complement to
lamb kebabs,
roast beef and
hearty sauces.

667 Pinot Noir appealing aromas of red cherry, earth and light vanilla
notes. Plush tannins and balanced acidity support core flavors of ripe Bing
cherry, bittersweet cocoa powder, and delicate hints of sage. 667 Pinot
Noir can be enjoyed on its own or with poached salmon, veal Parmesan, or
grilled lamb.

SUMMER!
One of the great things about living in Kentucky is
the change of seasons. Who wants to wear white
and sandals year round!
So? What’s fabulous for fall?
We asked the staff at Beverly Hills Bargain
Boutique to help us with ideas for updating our fall/
winter look without spending a fortune.
Jeans and denim leggings are still a fashion
staple. Dark and sleek with skinny legs, boot cut, or
flare, topped with jackets or oversized sweaters.
Purses are large and leather
with stud, metal, or feather trim
in black, brown, or bold hues.
Boots are knee high, over the
knee, or stop at the ankle, in flat,
mid, and high heel.
Take any outfit from “bland to
bling” with the right accessories
for the season from novelty
scarves, necklaces, earrings
and bangles , to the new trend
of feathers.
As you can see from the
“before” and “after” photos of
Bailey and Lyndia, a jacket,
boots, purse, and accessories
can take a ho-hum outfit into
something FABULOUS for fall!

As the holidays approached, my friend AnneMarie called to say that she and her fiancé, Terry, would
like to stop by so we could exchange
gifts. I said, “Oh, boy! Let Christmas
begin!” Then, AnneMarie whispered into
the phone, “Jerry got you a gift. I don’t know how you’ll pull this off, but
act like you like it. It’s a clock.” And, with a click, the phone call ended.
I thought it was an odd comment, but I quickly dismissed it as I put on
some music, lit the Christmas candles, and made some hot cocoa to share
with my friends.
Soon, AnneMarie and Jerry arrived, and each of them thrust a gaily
wrapped package into my hands. As we chatted, AnneMarie seemed
nervous and kept giving me “questioning” looks. I tried to silently reassure
her with knowing nods. When it came time to open our gifts, Jerry insisted
that I open his gift first. He was beaming with pride ... I wondered to
myself, “How bad could it be?”
I tried my best to sound sincere as I pulled the clock from its bag. I
gushed, “Oh, my goodness! Where in the world did you ever find this ?”
AnneMarie later told me that I deserved an Academy Award!
It’s fun to watch the faces of people who see the clock for the first time
as they, too, struggle to be polite. Often, someone will pick up the clock,
expecting it to be heavy, then break into laughter upon finding that it’s
actually made of a lightweight plastic. That crazy plastic clock, adorned with griffins and silk flo wers, has provided lots of laughs over the
years. I’m grateful that Jerry thought enough of me to want to give me a gift. It truly is the thought that counts. But, what was he
thinking?

Growing up, the boys each got a new ornament every year. While
living in Mississippi, the three of us would head to the Hallmark store on the
square, where I was largely ignored until it came time to pay.
Together, the two of them would look over each ornament on display,
quickly discarding those meant for girls, teachers, relatives, and other old
people. Candidates under consideration were handled, inspected from
every angle. Serious discussion about the relative merits of their top picks
often lasted upward of an hour. Sometimes longer. Most years, the lucky
ornaments that got selected were characters from some movie or comic
the boys liked. Frequently, Will’s choice had moving parts, lights, and sound
effects; predictably, the most expensive ornament in the store. After
making their final choice, celebratory candy from the old-fashioned candy
counter (conveniently located near the register) was selected and, in true
Oxford style, put in individual cellophane bags tied with ribbons and,
depending on who was working the counter, a balloon.
Each year, I envisioned us laughing and singing carols as we
“ornamentized” the tree, sipping from our mugs of cocoa topped with
marshmallows AND whipped cream. Instead, each year, the boys would
fight over the placement of their old and new ornaments, change the lyrics
to the carols, and leave cocoa rings and spills all over the furniture.
Sometime during high school, we stopped going together to buy
ornaments, and some years, ornaments were not even purchased. I miss
that tradition, but other traditions remain: For the past 15 years or so, the
boys have relived the “Hallmark Throwdown” — a fight so legendary that it
was the talk of the town in Oxford for years afterwards — as the two Boba
Fett ornaments come out of the box. TWO BOBA FETTS! The fights have
gotten less dramatic (no candy throwing, biting, or summoning of super-
human powers of molten lava), but there’s still bickering about how
Christmas was ruined by the other by not selecting a different ornament.
We have other traditions as well. I’m also that mom who kept every
ornament the kids made in school: triangle-shaped angels and stars made
from popsicle sticks, Santas with cotton-ball beards, and other glittered
treasures that are now largely bald.
There is one ornament that is particularly hideous -- a diorama of
Christmas made from a laundry scoop (yes, you read that right) that Scott
made in pre-kindergarten. When he brought it home that first year, I tried to
hide it in the back of the tree, but he found it and placed it front and
center for everyone to admire. And thus, that tradition was born.
Tonight, I breathe in that heavenly smell of
Christmas death (as a five-year-old
environmentalist, Will informed me that the
aroma I enjoyed so much was really just
the tree decomposing) and watch the
once-eschewed-as-tacky multi-colored
lights on the “big-ass Gardner tree”
dance in the darkness.
Before the boys, I had themed trees with matching ornaments, ribbon, and elegantly
understated white lights. They were truly beautiful and elegant trees. But those trees could not
begin to compare with the tree before me, a tree full of memories and more gorgeous than
any you’d find in a magazine — multi-colored lights, tri-angels, 2 Boba Fetts and all.

I want to be MISS AMERICA
when I grow up!
Ann Blair Thornton, Miss Kentucky
Pink or purple “princess” dresses, boas, a tiara, scarves and jewelry — a few of
Ann Blair Thornton’s favorite “things” at age 3.
The reigning Miss Kentucky , Ann Blair Thornton of Bowling Green had a dream of
one day being crowned Miss America , and in January 2012, she will represent
Kentucky in the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Terri Ann Thornton, Ann Blair’s mom, remembers very well when Ann Blair was 4
years old and announced, out of the blue, she wanted to be Miss America . The family
thought it was “little girl” talk, but Ann Blair persisted. By the time Ann Blair was 9 years
old, Terri Ann realized that this was truly a goal of Ann Blair’s. As any good mother
would do, Terri Ann encouraged her daughter by reminding her that Miss America
needed a talent! So, Ann Blair and her sister Margaret began piano lessons.
Ann Blair was not allowed to enter any kind of pageant until her parents felt she
was old enough to make that decision. At age 15, Ann Blair entered the Miss Kentucky
Teen Preliminary Pageant where she placed 2nd runner-up. Two years later she won
that title, Miss Kentucky Teen .
In the meantime, this serious young woman attended each Miss America Pageant
from age 14 with her dad, Steve, as her chaperone. She saw firsthand the dedication
and hard work involved in competing in the Miss America Pageant .
When asked about any unusual or bad experiences in a pageant, Terri Ann
giggled as she recalled the first pageant. “There was an ice storm and the electricity
went out just before the pageant started. But as they say, the show must go on! A
large battery powered spotlight showcased the girls and one
of the sponsors held a flashlight on the piano keyboard as
Ann Blair played in the talent competition!”
When Ann Blair was 18, she became eligible to compete
in the Miss Kentucky Pageant . She did well the first year she
competed. The following year she was runner-up in the
pageant. Then she became very busy as an active college
student involved in the academic life, as well as sorority and
student government life. It was very difficult to balance all
the college activities with pageant preparation.
For the first time in a pageant preliminary, she did not do
as well. Terri Ann remembers consoling Ann Blair backstage.
She hugged her and said, “It’s going to be OK.” Then she
gave her wise advice, saying, “It’s time
to be a good sport, congratulate the
winners, and console the other girls.”
The next year, 2010, Ann Blair
prepared extensively for the pageant
and her effort was rewarded. She was
crowned Miss Kentucky !
Terri Ann remarks, “This is a magical
time in our life. The pageant provides
so much opportunity and the
community support is heartwarming.”
Ann Blair will travel the state with
speaking engagements promoting her platform, Alzheimer Awareness, and promoting
the Kentucky Proud program.
The Miss America Pageant will be televised on ABC on January 14, 2012. Bowling
Green will be cheering for our girl, Ann Blair Thornton, a young woman with FLAIR!

There were no steps that led to the room,
where on a sunny day it was always gloom.
Only mice and cobwebs lived up there
and a cowardly ghost who loved to scare.
The house was home but very old,
and the attic was haunted, I was told.
Then one day, curiosity got the best of me,
and on a chair I climbed up to see.
The room was dark, and there was no light,
and it was as dark as the darkest night.
I stepped back and closed the latch,
when on something I felt my sleeve catch.
I pulled away and fell to the floor,
just as a puff of wind blew open the door.
I started screaming in such a fright,
for up in the attic I saw a light.
It glowed and moved slowly around,
and from the attic is started down.
Then it stopped and faded away,
as if in the attic it decided to stay.
I never saw it again, but sometimes at night,
some people have said they could see a light
shining through the cracks as if pacing around,
wanting to leave but afraid to come down.

The Plant Lady
FLA I R
From the Garden to the Door
I’ve always had a compulsive need to make things and
often inspired by nature. Drying flowers from the garden is a
Victorian way of preserving nature’s beauty. It is a lost art!
There are many flowers and foliages that can be dried
from the garden. While the Hydrangeas are changing their
colors from creamy whites and sky blues into shades of olive
greens to antique mauves is when the creative part of me
begins to shine, and I’m compelled to make an everlasting
arrangement.
I leave them alone on the plant until their color and
texture is just right. The petals need not be too thin and fragile
(as those in a fresh cut arrangement), but rather a soft,
thicker, leathery texture - it’s then time to harvest
for drying.
I gather a number of flower heads, tying three to five stems
together and hanging them in a cool, semi-dark location.

Step #1 - You will need a 12”
wreath base, hot glue sticks and
glue gun, and about 8 to 10
Hydrangea flower heads to make
a finished 24” wide x 7” deep
wreath.
When making a wreath, it’s all
about balance - from the shades
of color to the overall shape.
Step #2 - Place the Hydrangea
flower and test for size and
space. You will want to cover
the wreath frame, top/front
and sides.
If the Hydrangea flower is too big, just break down your flower head into
smaller bunches of flowers. Attaching the flowers to the wreath base using hot
glue is the easiest technique; just be careful to not burn yourself.
Add a small amount of glue to the wreath,
then place the dried floral to that area,
hold, then repeat.
Step #3 - Once the wreath frame can
no longer be seen, your Hydrangea wreath
is finished and ready for hanging.
Here they will hang and continue their preservation in the
technique called “Air Drying” and after a few days, the
Hydrangea flowers are ready for crafting.
Looking over my collection of wreath bases, from twig to
Styrofoam, I decide to make a Hydrangea wreath for the
front door using a straw base wreath, which is soft and will
not scratch the door.
Now, even though I’ve been known for favoring the
shade of green, this particular variety I’m using today is an
Annabelle Hydrangea and naturally ages to this wonderful
shade of sage.
Preserved flowers capture the vibrancy of the garden
while offering longevity through a whole season, making
them an excellent way to decorate your home or office,
and perfect for the fall season.

LINDSLEY LINDSLEY LINDSLEY
When four of Nashville’s finest female vocalists and songwriters (all
transplants from the Bluegrass State) get on stage together to perform, you can
expect a soulful storm of singing complete with thunder--Kentucky that is!
In 1996, Etta Britt and Sheila Lawrence first contemplated the concept of a female
quartet after they both read an article in The Tennessean about “The Friday Girls,” four
little girls who had cancer who formed a support group for other juvenile cancer patients
coming to Vanderbilt Hospital for treatment. (Lawrence’s father suffered from leukemia and
was treated by the head of the children’s cancer unit there.)
“They [the little girls] would meet with these children and let them know
what they were in for and basically were there for them,” says Lawrence.
“We were so moved by their story and wanted to do something for the
doctor who had done so much for my dad.”
“Etta suggested putting the four of us [Britt, Lawrence, Jonell Mosser,
and Vickie Carrico) together and got on the phone and made all the calls,”
adds Lawrence, “so really ‘The Friday Girls’ are the reason Kentucky
Thunder got together--a group of women supporting four very powerful
little girls.”
After one of the group’s first performances at Green’s Grocery in Leiper’s
Fork, Tennessee, sold out quickly, they booked an early weeknight show at
Nashville’s famed 3rd and Lindsley Bar & Grill.
When the women arrived at the club, a long line of fans had formed down
the sidewalk waiting to get inside, and Kentucky Thunder has been
entertaining appreciative audiences ever since.
Each of the women has had a successful career on her own over the last
several decades.
Jonell Mosser is a Nashville (and Bowling Green) favorite with the voice of
an angel who has played to sold out shows, recorded five of her own records,
and performed with some of the biggest artists in the music industry, including
Wynonna Judd, Etta James, Rodney Crowell, and Ringo Starr.
Sheila Lawrence, a native of nearby Barren County, Kentucky, and (along with Carrico) a
back-up singer for the legendary Brenda Lee, is one of Nashville’s great songwriters who
has recorded her own songs (on her 1996 CD Crazy Quilt ), played to packed houses for
years, and never fails to put a crowd on its feet.
Vickie Carrico is one of the group’s most seasoned performers who sang back-up for
Dottie West from 1979 to 1983, has been in recording studios, on stage, and writing
songs for over 25 years, and lights up the stage with her big voice
and spunky presence.
Finally, Etta Britt came to Nashville after joining the RCA
recording trio “Dave and Sugar,” and her experience with group
singing has been an invaluable asset to the quartet, not to mention
her funky moves and distinctive voice.
After performing together for 14 years, Kentucky Thunder finally
released their long-overdue debut album, appropriately titled ‘Bout
Damn Time , recorded live in front of an enthusiastic audience at 3rd
and Lindsley on April 1-2, 2010.
“I don’t know what we were waiting for,” says Mosser. “I guess
it’s because singing together was more for us than for anyone else.”
“I couldn’t be more thrilled about it,” adds Britt. “There is an
excitement when we step on stage and that is what we wanted to
bring to a record.”
Various members of the group co-wrote eight of the CD’s 14
tracks, which intermingle with covers of other songs.
“I have believed since our very first gig together that there’s a
magic between us that creates a joyful camaraderie that extends to
everyone who comes along for the ride with us,” says Carrico.
“We hope our friends, fans, and family have as much fun
listening and dancing to ‘Bout Damn Time as we had making it,”
adds Lawrence.
