Matthew 26:17-30
Intro:

7/17/13

From Passover to Communion! (Spurg) “The Jewish Passover was made to melt into the Lord’s Supper as the stars of the morning dissolve into the light of the sun.”

PREPPING FOR PASSOVER! (17-19)
vs.17 - “Disciples” - Peter & John! (Lk.22:8) “Prepare” - They would need to prepare the materials & the place: The Place - “follow a man carrying a pitcher of water!” The Materials - The bread, bitter herbs, wine, & a perfect lamb. Then have the lamb slain in the court of the Temple & the blood put on the altar. The lamb would be roasted whole, & then the feast would be ready! Seating arrangements: John & Judas have the seats of honor, on the right & left hand at the table. Maybe this is why they started arguing again about who was the greatest? (Lk.22:24)

TIPPING OFF THE TRAITOR! (20-25)
vs.22 - The Disciples didn’t know up to the end it was Judas. This shows us Jesus love & patience shown to Judas, in that He obviously didn’t treat him any diff. “Is it I?” - {The construction of the question expects “ no” as the answer.} Literally - “Not at all I”. It’s interesting as they asked Him,“Is it I? That they didn’t say, “ Is it Judas?” I think we would be quick to look around & suspect someone! Simon the Zealot, “I bet it’s Matthew that tax collector guy!” vs.23 - Read Jn.13:26-30 (actually gave it to him/host would always do this)

It was an honor to be given a morsel of bread from your host. Ps.41:9 “Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.” Jesus, giving the bread was a gracious act of hospitality; for Judas, accepting the bread was an evil act of treachery! vs.24 - Yes, human responsibility smack dab in the middle of decreed Sov. Divine View - Predicted in scripture & was part of the plan of God! Human View - Judas was guilty of a base crime & was completely responsible for what he did! vs.24b - Good argument for eternal punishment vs. annihilation! vs.25 - Here is the announcement of the traitor in the midst! It seems like Judas was the last to ask, “Is it I?” “You have said it!” - {Jesus couldn’t say no!} It takes a thief!

LAUNCHING THE LORD’S SUPPER! (26-30)
It was after Judas left the room that Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper! He took 2 elements from the Passover feast - The Unleavened Bread & The Cup! He used them to picture His own death: Broken Bread - Picture His body given for the sins of the world. Fruit of the Vine - Pictures His Blood shed for the remission of sins.

Communion:
“…in remembrance of me”(1 Cor.11:24) - Remember Him?…how can we forget Jesus? Jesus who is my surety, my Savior, the lover of my soul, my bridegroom, w/o whose love I cannot live…forget Him? Yet often I have, …how often we do! - In the hour of sin, grief, worry,

or in prosperity, or joy we have forgotten Him! Memorial view - Zwingli (Swiss reformer) Transubstantiation - (L.)Trans=across Substancia=substance The substance of the elements change(across) into the Body & Blood of Christ. They distinguish between the Substance/Essence & the Accidents/Outwardly perceivable qualities. Upon the miracle of the Mass you have: the substance of the Body & blood of Christ w/o the accidents of body & blood; & the accidents of Bread & wine w/o the substance of bread & wine. Consubstantiation - The body & blood are somehow present “with” (con) the substance of bread & wine. 1st, The Preparations - The room. The room of our heart! 2nd, The Host - Lk.22:15 “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you...” Understand His desire for you, How He longs for you, & what He has prepared for you! That evening He desired to “eat w/them” - Even though His body was about to be broken, His blood shed, His heart grieved, & be betrayed by all, within hours...what a love this is! - {Even though 1 would betray Him, 1 Deny Him, & all would forsake Him!} This morning He desires to eat w/you! - Even though you’ve betrayed Him…& you will again! You have grieved Him…& will again! Have broken His heart …& will again! He desires to eat with you… Oh what a Love! 3rd, The Self-Examination - 2 Cor.13:5 “Examine yourselves as to whether

you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? --unless indeed you are disqualified.” Only 2 possibilities: [1] Christ in You! [2] Your Disqualified(reprobate, cast away, rejected) ie. not standing the test, not approved. #2 is dismissed from His table, as was Judas! 4th, Confession of Sin - Job 13:23 “How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my transgression and my sin.” 5th, The Personal Invite - (vs.27 - “you”/disciples; vs.28 - “many”/Me!!!) 6th, The Blood - Lev.17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.” It was the surrender of the life of an innocent animal in the place of guilty man. 7th, The New Cov. - In contrast to the Old(the Law)that which “covered” sin, The new “puts it away” Heb.9:26 “He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” The Law was like: “covering” a rattlesnake w/a trash can lid; the New Cov. is like taking his venom out…..he can still bite, but it’s not deadly! 8th, The Remission of Sins - If you ever feel unworthy to come to His table, then just make sure you bring your sin w/you to the table! Sin gives us a right to Christ…He is a Savior from sin. It is as sinners we can sit at the table to begin with! “Sin is the handle by which I can take hold of Christ!” Listen, sin is mentioned at the table! And what does he say about it?

Matthew 26:17-30
End:

He speaks of it as “sent off”, “taken away”(remission).

vs.30 - “Hymn” - Was part of the traditional Hallel Ps.116-118. Here Jesus sings Praises to God in the face of rejection, suffering, & death. A reminder to us to Praise Him in any circumstance!
