Twitter breaks the news once again. Our favourite sounds-like-a-popstar-but-isreally-a-bootylicious-punk and singer of the wonderfully semi-comedic songs such as ‘Did It On ‘Em’, ‘Stupid Hoe’ and the more recent party anthem ‘Starships’, Nicki Minaj took to the limited character social media space and said that she’d be making her way to New Zealand. A Kiwi fan asked when lady Roman would be gracing the land of the long white cloud, to which she responded “New Zealand Sept 28th!!!”. While there’s no official word yet on whether it will be the one show, where it/they will be, when tickets are on sale or who (if anyone) will be supporting or playing with Miss Minaj, it’s news that’s more than welcome.

New York’s golden voiced virtuoso Regina Spektor will be making her way to New Zealand before touring around Australia in December. It was back in 2010 that the belle with the trademark spiking piano driven ballads was last in the country and found herself with a legion of new fans, as well as picking up a few more thanks to her songs on various commercials and on the indie rom-com coming of age hit 500 Days of Summer (which was used magnificently as the intro for the festival favourite flick). The troubadour will play at Auckland’s Town Hall on Monday 03 December and tickets are available now through Buy Tickets.

If you have a Facebook account, a Twitter feed or you just know more than one other person, you’ll know about a little show called Breaking Bad. The final season has begun airing in the United States, and the marketing crew (along with fans) have been running a viral campaign called The Breaking Bad Art Project. The campaign features works by Jeff Boyes, Frank Kozik and more artists who are yet to be revealed. Head to breakinggifs.com to see some of the stunning stylised pieces. Riot grrrl originators Bikini Kill have announced they’ll be releasing a back catalogue as they celebrate their 25th anniversary. The queens of lady grunge (who would probably hate being called that) are starting up a record label in their own name and are in the process of reissuing physical copies of all of their releases, starting with a self-titled EP in the next few months. It’s about time there was a riot grrrl resurgence. You know how every man and his dog has seen Curb Your Enthusiasm and will never shut up about it? Well good news for all of you Laz-Dav fans out there. Jerry Seinfeld has a new show out and it’s called Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. What’s it about? It’s about comedians sitting in cars while they get coffee. And yeah, it’s pretty damn funny. You won’t find the show on any television network but you can watch it on Youtube. What better way to start a Jerry Seinfeld show than with co-conspirator Larry David saying to Jerry that he finally has a show that is actually about nothing? More New Year’s Eve festival show announcements and acts are coming through, and the La De Da crew have released their first line-up. The two days of partying over Sunday 30 and Monday 31 December at Dry River Road in Martinborough will include a mix of drum ‘n’ bass, hip hop and reggae acts including Shapeshifter, Concord Dawn, David Dallas, Tomorrow People, 1814, Andy C, Dub FX, Flower Fairy, The Nextmen, DJ Marky, MC Stamina, Aphrodite, Delta Heavy and Bare Noize. More acts for La De Da will be announced as we draw closer to 2013.

1990s alt rockers Everclear announced that they’ll be playing in New Zealand for the first time in 14 years. Recently the band toured the United States with a plethora of yesteryear pop acts including Sugar Ray, Marcy Playground, Lit and Gin Blossoms, and now it seems that Everclear are ready to take their sound around the world once again. The intimate show will be a small one, held at Auckland’s Juice Bar in Parnell on Wednesday 17 October. Tickets are available now through Ticketek.

The ‘90s nostalgia is coming in waves. Not only are Everclear making their way here later in the year but we’re also being treated to a Smashmouth show in October. While no official announcement has been made, a New Zealand date was included in an Australian list of tour dates. The band behind such guilty pleasure hits as ‘Walking On The Sun’, ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends?’ and the single for the 1999 comic book film Mystery Men, ‘All Star’ will be playing at Auckland’s Powerstation on Wednesday 17 October – the same date as Everclear, no less. What’s with the ‘90s resurgence? Will The Fresh Prince of Bell Air be doing a tour with Jazzy Jeff and a hologram of Bradley Nowell from Sublime? Probably.

Have you heard about the new KFC spicy ham tortilla wrap burger with hash brown pie that connects to your wi-fi and syncs up your iPod with the double down app? It was all over Facebook. Yes, the Double Down is back, and KFC doesn’t have to do anything to sell their gimmick food. Social media and mob mentality does that for them. Hell, we’re writing about it so technically this is a contribution to the viral campaign. There’s no irony lost in these pages, dear reader. The KFC Double Down campaign has been simple. “You asked. It’s back.” But did you really ask? Did you really want the combination of deep fried chicken with ham and cheese all over your greasy mits or did you simply aid dirty bird into making a killing of your longing to fit in? A while ago my flatmate asked me if I had any intention of trying the KCF Pie. It’s been a good few years since I’ve indulged in the Colonel’s secret delights, and something about realising that made me want to starve off from the house of where the bird is the word. Personally I had no intention of trying the KFC Pie which is “… brimming with tender chicken, KFC’s signature potato & gravy and the Colonel’s Secret Recipe of 11 herbs and spices”, but that’s just me. What I’m on about here is gimmick food, which is all that I could think of when I heard KFC was having a pie as well. Whatever happened to Georgie Pie, right? While I can’t remember what it was I loved about that place, I do remember that I preferred it to McDonalds. Maybe KFC thought that since outlets like Facebook give people a nostalgic platform to create groups and say “OMG! BRING BACK GEORGIE PIE! PASTRY FOR LIFE LOL!”, the “restaurant” could jump on the retrospective bandwagon and

make a pie that would get you talking about good old Georgie. Look, it’s working here, right now. KFC does gimmick food well. That’s a marketing technique, and one that works wonders for them. It’s not limited to KFC either, so don’t assume that I’m simply ripping into the poultry connoisseurs. It wasn’t all that long ago that Carl’s Jr opened up and every second person was creating a Facebook event to go out on a road trip. Apparently curly fries are worth the $20 petrol on a Sunday afternoon. You’ve got to soak up that whiskey somehow, I guess. What I’m getting at is the mob mentality of social media and the idea that you, as a consumer, are essentially doing advertising agencies job for them. Something about that is irritating when you think about it, whether it’s because everyone likes to consider themselves as a savvy consumer or just because these fast food companies are making a killing off of what is essentially meme eating. Fast food outlets know we’re facing hard times and are trying to make eating fun. I guess it’s working, but something about that just fucks me off. Happy eating.

Doctor dude himself. Captain cool. New Zealand’s Tom Jones. The swooner for your aunt Petunia. Yep, John Rowles is finally calling it quits after 45 years in the music industry, but not before heading out on the road for one last tour. Even though technically his final tour was last year, he’s taking the Rolling Stones approach of “Alright, just one more”.

Four or five weeks later, Lydia Cole and Tom Lark find themselves at the end of their journey around the country and finish up at in Hamilton for the final show of their tour. They’ve been up, down and all around New Zealand over the past month or so, earning themselves a reputation for their niche, intimate and harmonic sounds.

Life after The Exponents isn’t a quiet one for one of the country’s most notorious frontmen. The Jordan Luck Band are taking the show on the road this week with fellow Auckland heavy rockers Ekko Park. This Saturday sees the southbound winter tour hit Christchurch inbetween the Friday show at The Blue Pub in Methven and the Sunday show at The Strawberry Tree in Kaikoura.

in 2008, indie rock band Collapsing Cities released their debut album elixir Always. Elixir Always showcased a brand of angular post punk, blending the seminal sound of Flying Nun bands of the early 80s with frivolous Brit-pop hooks. Four years after the release and their subsequent tour of the United Kingdom, Collapsing Cities have returned with sophomore album Strangers Again. Strangers Again sees the post punk sensibilities of its predecessor develop into polished multi-layered dance-pop. Strangers Again opens to the dreamy distorted bubble of synths and reverb saturated shoe-gaze riffs of its first single ‘Tazers’, which was released in 2009. Collapsing Cities are not afraid to experiment and incorporate various instrumental textures into their trademark sound. Churning classic rock riffs ebb and flow against a tide of thundering disco drumbeats and the upbeat surging rhythm of synths in ‘Queue For The Queue’. However, Strangers Again presents a new melancholic, brooding side to Collapsing Cities. Pulsing robotic synths and thick throbbing basslines escalate the dramatic tension surrounding the spiteful lyrics of break up themed tune, ‘Regret’. ‘Favours For Favours’ could be a long lost Smiths cover with its surly lyrics, velvety vocals and dense bassline exuding a sense of loneliness. Emotional fragility also seeps into the meandering guitar riff, metronomic drumbeat and rich vocal harmonies of piano driven ballad ‘Death On The Victoria Line’.

Collapsing Cities have retained their ability to sugarcoat the trials and tribulations of adult life with upbeat pop melodies guaranteed to get toes tapping. Vocalist Steve Mathieson earnestly explores lyrical themes of turbulent relationships, and disillusionment of life with razor sharp wit and cynicism. “Congratulations. You’re hired. Then fired. On your first shift” Mathieson drily deadpans on ‘Detour Ends Here’ with nonchalance reminiscent of Pavement’s Stephen Malkmus. ‘Mega 5th’ seems to be the sequel to Elixir Always’ ‘Fear Of Opening My Mouth’ outlining the hardships of life in London including bar fights, band tension, and sleeping on floors. Mathieson’s nonchalant demeanor shifts to that of a tortured lovelorn soul on ‘This Mess’, a tune highlighting the heartache of long distance relationships. Strangers Again polishes the raw edges of the jaunty post punk sound established on Elixir Always. Strangers Again is at times distinctly darker, and more melodically complex than its predecessor. However, Collapsing Cities are still able to create dance floor filling tunes riddled with contagious lyrics sure to get crowds singing along. This album was worth the wait.

in a similar manner to how Heath Ledger’s death cast a shadow over the Dark Knight, there’s an air of inevitability to this conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s batrilogy. You know you’re going to be in the theatre for quite a while, that Nolan will use massive scale and strong characterisation to awe you on multiple levels, that it will aspire to loftier heights than most blockbusters, but mostly that it is actually all going to end. For all its aspirations, The Dark Knight Rises leans heavily at times on convention – a ticking clock here, a betrayal there – but these prove more welcome than the earnest speechmaking that could so easily have sent off this great big-screen version of the caped crusader. Nolan tries to replace Ledger’s magnetic performance with Tom Hardy’s imposing physicality, which impresses on the screen but isn’t hugely differentiated from the other

Tattoos are fashionable right now. That’s a fact, and one you probably don’t want to hear if you have a sleeve. Even Helen Mirren has one, but she hates it. This week the Inside New Zealand team look at tattooing. Here’s hoping there aren’t too many tramp stamps (or slag tags as we prefer to call them).

macho brawling seen in this film or its predecessors except in terms of its massive scale. Bale excels as always as he goes on a journey that recalls both the previous two films, and so do his co-stars – Anne Hathaway proving not as out of her element as I’d anticipated. Gotham’s plight comes close to Escape From New York territory in a big departure from what we normally get out of the toothless threats of supervillains and there are welcome nods to the Occupy movement and Arab Spring to help differentiate this from run-of-the-mill fare. Plus the action’s great and the IMAX stuff looks awesome, but most importantly The Dark Knight Rises wraps in satisfying fashion, even if it may take a little while to fully grab you. There are some bumps along the way - it’s by no means perfect, and doesn’t hit the same heights The Dark Knight did – but Nolan’s done good.

Okay, who else is sick of shows that have too many acronyms? The collective comedic geniuses behind Childrens Hospital were, which is why Paul Scheer came up with National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sports Utility Vehicle:: which rips the shit into action movies and pseudo-crime dramas with a great revolving roster of guest stars.

First of all, we’re not saying that this fan film is great. But if there are any fans of comic scribe Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man out there, check out the fan made film online. It’s well put together for a no budget flick, but it’s still just a fan film.

If you’re up at 7am then throw on the TV or hop online to a multitude of websites to see the live Opening Ceremony of this year’s Olympic Games being held in London. How many gold medals will the New Zealand team walk away with? And is poker an Olympic sport yet? How about charades? Or Snap? Or Twister?

If you haven’t seen the film Choke then you’re missing out. The film adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk novel (author of Fight Club) stars Sam Rockwell and Anjelica Huston and follows a sex addict who looks after his crazy mother and might be a clone of Jesus.

Tuesday. The day after Monday and the day before Wednesday. It’s surrounded by the worst day of the week and the middle of the week. It really hasn’t got much going for it. Which is why the good folks at Wagamama are coming to your rescue. This Tuesday 31 July is National Noodle Day, which is actually a thing and not just your immature boyfriends excuse for getting his junk out in public. No, National Noodle Day is a good day, especially at Wagamama where there’s a free lunch between 12pm and 2pm. There’s no catch and no ploy, it’s just good food and good times for free. What’s not to love with the meals like Yaki Soba, Chicken Katsu Curry, Teriyaki Beef Raisu and Amai Lamb Salad? Nothing. Nothing is not to love. Or, everything is to love. Celebrate love with National Noodle Day at Wagamama this Tuesday 31 July, but get in quick as there are no bookings.

Admit it, you like baking. Whether you’ve got a hee-hee or a hoohah, baking cakes and cookies is fun for dudes and dames alike. Unfortunately all you do is follow the recipe because you’re not all that creative apart from running a blog where you post images of an androgynous David Bowie, the legs of Kate Moss and a couple of kittens. No, maybe it’s best that you leave baking to the professionals like the cake veterans at Rocket Kitchen. The other weekend was my friend’s birthday and her family got her a Red Velvet cake. All she could talk about is how she wanted to make a Blue Velvet cake and give it to our friend who loves David Lynch, while all I could think about is how I wanted to be left alone with the Red Velvet cake so I could whisper sweet nothings into the surprisingly sexy icing. If a poem was a cake, the laureate would be Rocket Kitchen.

the claddagh
372-376 BRoadway, newmaRket, auCkland
There’s something to do every night of the week at The Claddagh. Monday pool nights, darts competitions on Tuesdays, pub quiz Wednesdays, karaoke Thursdays and fresh, live music every Friday and Saturday. Come Sunday there’s no better place for a roast meal for you and your friends or that stranger you took home who you think you’ve got at least one more round with.

upstaiRs, 104 CuBa st, wellington
The bar so nice they named it twice, Mighty Mighty isn’t your average bar. Where you might usually expect a drink with a bit of live music here and there, Mighty Mighty takes the eccentric rich man who owns a mansion and lives by himself approach of mixing it all up with hula hoopin, burlesque, rollerskating ukelele orchestras, limbo experiments, rap wrestling, well bent comedy, messy eating competitions… anything with that extra zing so you can escape your boring as hell life.

chapel
147 ponsonBy Road, auCkland
Club Connoisseurs is the name of the game at Ponsonby’s Chapel Bar & Bistro on Monday nights from 6:30 to 10:30. When you’re back at work feeling sorry for yourself, Chapel’s helping you get back on the good foot with DJs spinning their treasured collection of funk, reggae, soul, jazz and more so you can get on up through the rest of the week.

Racket
6-10 Roukai lane, auCkland
Every Thursday at Racket down in Britomart, local DJs MayaVanya and Girl Tiger are your captains on the sea of “it’s not quite the weekend but thank God it nearly is”. Or they’re your pilots, or maybe your tour guides. Either way, they all know that you’re there because you want a good time, and these party starters know how to kick off the not-quite-weekend in style.

Although, the parallel with marginalised entertainers may have once applied. These days with Glee and like-minded entertainment jugganutics the species we knew back in college as ‘geeks’ are mainstream, front row and centre. But back in the day, aside from Devo, no band was more synonymous with intelligent, quirky and downright awkward spastic rock than Weezer. Formed way back 1992, Californians Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp, and Jason Cropper had their first practices in February 14 of that year before opening for Keanu Reeves’ band Dogstar a couple of months later. The band are best checked for the singles ‘Undone – The Sweater Song’, ’Buddy Holly’, ’Perfect Situation’, ’Say It Ain’t So’, ‘Island in the Sun’, ‘Beverly Hills’ and the slightly dubious ‘Pork and Beans’. Sticking together that long has proved a bit of a challenge with the line-up has morphing about four times over their nine album/six EP career. Their last “proper” studio album, Hurley, was released in September 2010 and was closely followed up by deluxe release of their second album and biggest memory - 1996’s Pinkerton. While getting ready for their debut, the Blue Album, the band wanted to intensify their vocal interplay by singing barbershop quartet songs. The band also briefly toyed with self-production but under pressure from David Geffen settled on ex-Cars main man Ric Ocasek, who managed to convince the band to change their guitar pickup from the neck to the bridge pick-up, giving a brighter sound and shaping their trademark riffs. It was also during these sessions that guitarist Jason Cropper left and was replaced by Brian Bell, leading to speculation about how much Bell contributed to the project. Weezer (the real name for the album) touches a number of Cuomo’s life experiences including heartbreak, jealousy, alcohol and former girlfriends as well as his brother’s car accident. One of their biggest singles, ‘Undone - The Sweater Song’ was once noted by Cuomo as “the

feeling you get when the train stops and the little guy comes knockin’ on your door. It was supposed to be a sad song, but everyone thinks it’s hilarious.” The accompanying video was one of Spike Jonze’s early directorial efforts. The pitch simply stated was: “A blue stage, a steadicam, a pack of wild dogs.” The video became an instant hit on MTV. The second single was ‘Buddy Holly’. The music video was another nowclassic Jonze effort with the band performing at the original Arnold’s Drive-In diner from the popular ‘70s television show, Happy Days, with cast member Al Molinaro making a cameo. Unsurprisingly that video also got the heavy rotate on MTV, as well as being featured as an extra in the MS 95 Upgrade start up package, along with Edie Brickell’s ‘Good Times’. More importantly, it scooped four times at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards. On the back of that good work Weezer went on to produce a pile of albums and have influenced many ‘cerebral’ bands, particularly in the States. Now, for the first time in over sixteen years, they’re back playing the Blue Album in its entirety. Pitchfork claimed “Weezer kept joy alive in arena rock” whilst the Beeb have concurred noting that the band “has refused to lie down and continues to influence new generations of emo and pop-punk bands. As a result, this is a record that will feel very familiar to dedicated fans and newcomers alike.” Well, ok. Now’s your chance. This visit will be both a celebration for older fans, reveling in nostalgia from Weezer’s storied Pinkerton tour of 1996, and an introduction to a younger generation working their way back from more recent albums. Such is the anticipation of this announcement that these shows are more than just a tour; they represent a culmination of years of collective longing. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

PASSIoN PIT ’S THIRD ALBUM Manners HAS BEEN YEARS IN THE MAKING FoR GooD REASoN, BUT IT MAY BE IMPoLITE To DIG Too DEEP INTo THE PIT oF SHAME. IT’S BEEN THREE whole years since Passion Pit’s last release, Manners, slammed into the charts like a wrecking ball through a mud hut. Rapidly gaining street cred as one of the cool new sounds for the modern generation, the media took to it like a junkie to crack. From ads for iPhone apps, popping up in shows like Skins and Gossip Girl and even featuring in game trailers for huge titles like LittleBigPlanet 2, these guys were everywhere. I remember scoring a goal in Fifa 10 with ‘Moths Wings’ in the background, making my victory just that much more kick-ass. So yeah, I get the feeling that you might’ve caught yourself murmuring along to the chorus for ‘Sleepyhead’ at least once. But like I said, that was three years ago. Granted, these boys are coming back up to bat, swinging hard with their new offering Gossamer. “I feel like my ideas are very similar, just a bit more mature and wiser. You learn a lot after you put your work out there, or, more accurately, someone else puts it out there for you,” says frontman Michael Angelakos. And it’s not just the music that’s maturing with age. “Personally, I’ve grown up a bit, but not much,” he modestly adds. “I’ve got quite a few experiences under my belt and I’m constantly working at maintaining some sort of stability, which I never did around the time of Chunk of Change.” Concerning the sophomore album, Angelakos explains: “Gossamer was a very slow and arduous process of essentially coming to terms with what works for me as a producer/songwriter. I need to feel safe, comfortable. Surrounded by people that care about the music almost more than I do, people that are also my friends and I love.” Launching into the full tale, he continues: “So after very painful sessions of trying to figure it out, I finally concluded that I was going to go back to New York City and co-produce the record with Chris Zane, with Alex Aldi engineering and those two guys mixing it. It had some ups and downs, but they understand me so well that if there were ever any problems - which there were - we could just take a day to ourselves and come back and just get back to work. It was an uncomfortable experience. Actually, it was just an uncomfortable thirteen months. Without Alex, and then Chris, I have no idea what I’d be doing right now. “It’s essentially a non-fictional account of events that occurred during a manic episode I had during the summer of 2011. It nearly ruined my entire life. I had very little recollection of the entire month and a half or so. So the startling and devastating accounts shared by my fiancée, my friends, my family, it became really hard to live with myself. The guilt and shame was unprecedented. But instead of running from it or making excuses, I decided to confront it on this album. So, thematically speaking, it’s a cathartic and extraordinarily therapeutic, albeit rather painful.” It’s not hard to make out how difficult the lifestyle can be, judging from the frontman’s responses to questions about music and his personal life. “Touring is tough. Not going to lie. And of course there’s a separation, a very distinct separation. We go on tour, come back, and try to assume a normal life. It’s really hard, it’s quite jarring for me personally. By the time I get comfortable I have to leave again. The whole process gets pretty vexing and you kind of just have to be optimistic about it. It’s a blurry, almost awkward dream. But you just try to have as much fun as possible, make the best of it.” And just so you know that we did ask, yeah they know about the porno of the same title. He hasn’t watched it, but Angelakos is aware of its presence. “It’s apparently a rarity, coveted by porn collectors. If I had known about the film I would have never named the band Passion Pit. Come to think of it, I probably shouldn’t have anyway.” WRITTEN BY JoSH LING

the first Resident Evil, which released way back in 1996, is remembered fondly by many gamers as their first foray into survival horror; a genre which was really still in its formative stage at the time. Questions as to how Capcom were going to approach this history were swimming through my head as I sat down to play the game in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago. Just how do you make a game that’s true to its past, and simultaneously deliver something that’s relevant to now? The levels I played were each from a different perspective: specifically, Chris’s and Leon’s. In most other games, the difference between two characters might be as simple as a differentlooking model, or as complex as having a different set of skills to use. Here, it’s much more like you’re playing two completely different games. Chris, for example, plays like your typical thirdperson shooter star. Lots of ammo, guns that pump out rounds like they’re unlimited in supply, and a melee fighting system that lets you carve up zombies that get close to you. You’d be forgiven for thinking you were playing Gears of War. Leon, on the other hand, is much more in keeping with survival horror tropes that hark all the way back to resident evil 4. Moving slowly, and with very little ammo, Leon is restricted to making his way around very narrow corridors in very low light. It’s not super clear yet how the various characters will interact, but Capcom suggests there will be three intertwining campaigns to play as a part of the overall resident evil 6 game. There’s also an interesting new take on the multiplayer, in which the game will dynamically assign you coop partners for certain sections of the campaign – much like the recent PSN game Journey, perhaps. It’s clear that Capcom are investing heavily in this new resident evil game, and that they’re keen to ensure fans of the franchise are well served by what they deliver. That they’re also not afraid to innovate, while risky, is potentially very exciting indeed.

which historical figure had some wicked style? Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s gets a 10/10. And I don’t mean the little black dress and the pearls (although it was styling-genius). I’m talking when she’s doing her rendition of ‘Moon River’ on her balcony in cropped navy pants and her grey crew-neck sweater. Casual cool at its best. what muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo? Lykke Li and Janelle Monae, without a doubt. Lykke Li for putting an eclectic spin on otherwise classic pieces and Janelle Monae for her never-ending supply of perfectly cut suits.

society’s biggest fashion faux-pas? Ill-fitting jeans. I know it’s not easy to find the perfect pair of jeans, but if you haven’t found them, don’t wear them. And on that note, leggings are not an acceptable substitute for pants. what’s the must-have look this winter? Beanies! A classic beanie teamed with an anorak and a striped tee is definitely a necessity for both guys and girls. No teacozies please. Colours/patterns big this season? I can never go past navy blue anything. It’s my favorite winter colour. The only thing better than navy, is navy stripes. Teamed with something bright, it’s a winning combination. what are the essentials for a man’s wardrobe? So many guys out there are wearing pieces far too big for them and it doesn’t do them any favors. Take some advice from RyGos in Crazy stupid Love, he knew what he was talking about. what are the essentials for a lady’s wardrobe? A good supply of quality basics. I personally find it hard to justify spending money on clothes that aren’t ‘statement’ pieces, but they’re such a necessity and well worth the investment. T by Alexander Wang is a good place to start. everyone should own at least one good… Watch. They seem to be overlooked these days as people use their phones to keep time, but I personally love feeling the weight of a watch on my wrist. It’s the perfect understated accessory to any outfit and will become your lifeline after a few wears. hyphenate three words to describe your style: Casual-as-fuck.

THEY’VE BEEN THRoUGH MUSICAL HELL AND BACK BUT THE DUNEDIN BAND REFUSES To CALL IT QUITS AS THEY FIND THE CALM AFTER THE SToRM. Breaking up the band, leaving their label and cancelling thousands of dollars of tours – it’s fair to say that the making of Harmony was not as harmonious as the title suggests. The irony’s not lost on Die!Die!Die! lead singer Andrew Wilson – in fact, it’s the chaotic events over the last year that gave him the idea for the title. “I like to think it came full circle. I was feeling harmonious after all the shit went down. What with Manu [Taylor] and Mike [Logie] coming in and everything happening the way it did, it kind of turned out well.” As the saying goes, when it rains it pours – so was the case of the shit storm that hit the Dunedin-formed noise-pop band no less than 12 months ago. So where did it all go wrong? After nearly 10 years together, it was clear that things weren’t working out. Living an insular existence in an all consuming world of band life, a gruelling back-to-back 100-show tour proved to be the catalyst and bassist Lachlan Anderson said goodbye. “We used to just jump into these long tours back in the day, but it was no good,” says Andrew. “We quickly realised it wasn’t working and we weren’t clicking the way we used to. “So after we recorded two weeks in France, we broke up and headed to New Zealand with our tail between our legs, cancelled three months of touring, lost a lot of money.” Determined to finish the album, Andrew, along with long-time friend and drummer Michael Prain headed to Australia, picking up their new bassist Michael Logie (of The Mint Chicks, Opossom and his own solo fame) along the way. “We decided we needed to finish it. It’s not like it wasn’t affected by moving around or the split, but it’s like Mikey and I were determined to for our own sanity. We have never been ones to say things and not follow through.” Having Michael was like a “breath of fresh air” for the band, a refreshing sound and a difference that Andrew says was just what they needed at the right time. “He’s just such a competent dude, an amazing musician. He’s completely different from me and Mikey – in a good way. He actually knows what he’s doing, whereas we are from that Dunedin school of thought where you form a band then learn how to play guitar.”

Shying away from the engineered punk-rock sound of their previous albums, Promises, Promises and Form, the goal was to create something that captured the sound of the live experience – the energy, the electric, the raw sound of Die!Die!Die!. And while it wasn’t a full on rebellion, Andrew describes it as “stripped back” from all the layers. Around the same time as players went their separate ways, the band also separated themselves from record label Flying Nun – another relationship Andrew says “wasn’t working”. They set about finishing the album with the help of producer Chris Townsend, musician Thomas Healy on guitar, and Shayne Carter (former vocalist of Dimmer) recorded additional vocals. Things were getting back to business – before the band broke up again. “We decided to never talk about Die!Die!Die! again. It was like our dirty secret,” laughs Andrew. “Looking back, it was just too much time together. I think we have matured now to see there is life after the band. Before it was Die!Die!Die!… or die – but now we are going to approach it differently to do an album because we want to, not because we have to.” Bringing manager Manu Taylor onboard gave them a new lease of life as Taylor wanted the band to do things their way. “We were in a situation when we were doing a lot of stuff we didn’t want to do. And as a band who started out doing what we wanted to all the time, it was a really fucked up situation. But now our control is back so everyone’s happy.” Harmony restored. WRITTEN BY LAURA WEASER
