A Day at the Circus Clue 1 and Clue 2

Pattern Notes:
Yarn used: Wollmeise Superwash Merino, fingering weight, approximately 200 yards of each color o Color A – Blue o Color B - Red Needle size: o US 1 (2.25 mm) circular for Magic Loop Gauge: 4”= 32 rows x 32 stitches Sizing Notes: o Pattern repeats are in multiples of 12, but increases or decreases can be made at different places on the palm side if needed for fit
Cast On: Cast on 48 stitches using Color A. Join in the round being careful not to twist stitches. Place 24 stitches on each needle.
Cuff: Row 1 & 2: k2, p2 for the round with Color A Row 3 & 4: k2, p2 for the round with Color B Repeat rows 1-4 Row 9 & 10: Repeat rows 1 & 2
Hand: Beginning with *Color A, k1, switch to Color B, k2*, repeat from * for the round. Continue in this pattern for 3 rounds.
The Miscellaneous stitches in the Key will be explained in later clues. For Clue 1, you will only knit and purl!!!
Clue 2
Work the following chart into your mitts. This design is based on a 6-stitch repeat. If you have adjusted the size of your mitts, you may need to adjust again to get this to fit in correctly. If you need to work a few more rounds of the striping in order to get your stitch count increased or decreased, that is not a problem. Chart 2a:
After you finish this chart (2a), start back working in the striping pattern again. Try the mitts on to see if you are at the base of the thumb on your hand and ready to start the increases for the thumb gusset. If you need to add a few more rows, that is fine. When you are at the point of needing to start the thumb increases, follow Chart 2b below as a guide. Thumb Gusset: Note: For those of you that are new to stranded knitting, you may want to put in a lifeline at this point before starting the thumb gusset. Also, I started my thumb gusset on the blue column at stitch 25. This was a random pick of where to start the gusset – it can be started on any of the solid Color A columns. You could start it with stitch 7, 13, 19 and so on. It really doesn’t make any difference!! Row 1: Continuing in the striped pattern, place marker before knitting stitch 25 (Color A). M1 (lifted increase) using Color A, k1 Color A, M1 Color A, place marker, then continue the rest of the round in the striped pattern. Row 2: Knit in striped pattern until reaching first marker, slip marker, k3 with Color A, slip marker, then continue the rest of the round in the striped pattern.
Row 3: Knit in striped pattern until reaching first marker. You will again be increasing one stitch on each side of the central Color A column. Whether you need to use Color A or Color B will vary a little and can be decided which one you think needs to go there for the chevron effect. If you use one color and decide on the next row that it should have been the other color – this is an easy fix!! You will always have the ‘other color’ right behind a knitted stitch. If you want/need to change something, you can take that one stitch off the left needle, tink that stitch and rework it with the other strand of color. Chart 2b:
Keep a solid vertical line of Color A up the middle of the thumb gusset. Based on the number of stitches you have all together, you will alternate the colors as needed to create a chevron look to the gusset. (Note: I will post more pictures on my project page if you need to see them. When you have a total of 17 stitches in your thumb gusset, you can stop increasing at that point if the fit is right for your thumb. If you need to add more increases, that is also okay. On the next round, knit in the striped pattern until you reach the first marker. Place your thumb gusset stitches onto waste yarn. Cast on 3 stitches using Color B, Color A, then again with Color B. Continue the remaining stitches of the round in the striped pattern.
Continue working in the striped pattern for 3 more rounds.
