A happy day at school

The memories of my primary school days are still fresh in my mind. Those were the days without worries and anxieties. But of course, not every day was a pleasurable day in school. Some days were good and some days were unpleasant, especially days when the homework given by teachers were unbearable. I would like to recall one of the finest days in school. One of them was Thursday. At that time I was studying in standard five. On Thursdays, the canteen operator would serve chicken rice, which was our favourite food at that time. All of my friends look forward to that particular day. On Thursdays, I would be looking at my watch more often than usual. Even Mr Khoo, my English teacher would be eagerly waiting for the school bell to ring. He enjoyed chicken rice as much as I did. I have noticed that before. When the bell rings, I can feel a tangible change in mood among my classmates. The boring atmosphere will immediately be excited by chatter of happy voices. We would run towards the school canteen, slowing down every time we encountered a teacher in our path. Teachers were very slow. They block the way and waste our precious twenty minutes of break time. I would often be one of those first to reach the canteen counter. I would order a plate of chicken rice with extra rice and chicken. Then I would move over to the refreshment stall of the canteen and buy a glass of iced lemon syrup. By this time the canteen will be crowded with pupils all trying to buy their favourite food to eat. I would always sit down in my regular place, which was at the rear part of the canteen. For a minute or so I will be unconscious to my surroundings. What matters most was the delicious taste of the chicken rice in my mouth and the thirst- quenching feeling of iced lemon tea running down my throat to my stomach. Ah..., a full stomach is a happy stomach. That was one of my happy days during my school life.
