Introduction
According to Evertson and Weinstein (2006), classroom management has been

shown in two definite purposes which said that ‘it not only seeks to establish and sustain an
orderly environment thus students could engage in meaningful academic learning, it also
aims to enhance student social and moral growth.’ The current issue about school truancy is
being spread out all over our country and recently I did read a newspaper article entitled ‘A
chronic state of affairs’ from The Star online. According to over 30 secondary schools and
primary school teachers, the average numbers of students who skip classes are gradually
increasing from 2% to 10% depending on the school population. A point that attracted me
was all about the teachers who are not responsible enough to notify the parents about the
child’s absence as they are required to write an official letter as it is considered to be an
overwhelming workload. Moreover, there are many causes been highlighted in the text, such
as truancy related to those who hail from broken families, boring curriculum and apathetic
teachers who are not responsible.

With the assistance of my prior knowledge and my pioneer readings through journals

and articles from reliable websites, there are concrete causes which give way for students to
have disciplinary problems and problematic behaviour in the classroom. Those causes are
considered to be no proper rules and routines in a classroom, boredom typed of classroom
and students are isolated by classmates.
2.1

No proper rules and routines in a classroom

Most of the behavioural problems such as truancy that is being arisen in between of
our students are just because of lacking of proper rules and routines in a classroom. Froyen
and Iverson (1999) assumed that a classroom with a proper management aims to
encourage students towards learning and to promote their positive behaviours. Teacher’s
role is further more important in overcoming this phenomenon as classroom is a mini
community and it would not function well without a set of rules to guide it especially a
primary classroom.
First of all, as a teacher I would list up some important guidelines to my students on
their first day on the classroom. I would ask them to be punctual and ready for the class and
moreover would instruct them to line up outside the class and wait for the teachers before
entering the room. The second guideline would be being polite and respectful to one
another, such as asking the teacher’s permission to go to the washroom. The third one
would be listening to teacher when he or she talks and if there is any doubt to be ask, I
would ask my students to raise their hand rather than saying, ‘don’t interrupt when the

teacher is talking’. Berliner (1998) suggests that teachers must make the students realize
their own behaviours for wrong doings or right. This will develop in students the habit of selfdiscipline.
Furthermore, important routines that I would encourage my pupils to do are finishing
the homework that being assigned to them daily. This daily routine for sure would help me to
monitor those pupils who have done their tasks and those who are behind in their work. The
next interactive routine which would done by me in classroom is the question and answer
session. This would enable me to monitor my students who are showing attention to my
lesson and those who are not.
Besides that, just to establish this routine runs smoothly, I would instruct my students
to raise their hands. Moreover, I would pose those questions randomly and give all my
students the opportunity to answer the questions. By having rules and daily routines in class,
primary students would learn positive behaviours and will not think of truanting class as they
would be crystal clear that a positive behaviour student could reach the star easily.
2.2

Boredom typed of classroom

Teachers nowadays are keeping an eye on students as consumers of facts and they
fail to remember that they are the active creators of knowledge. Some surveys had
acknowledged that teacher’s ineffective teaching skills would also give a way for truancy.
Thus, it is the teacher’s role to bring up an interesting classroom where the instruction
doesn’t consist of lecturing to students who sit in rows at desks, dutifully listening to
teacher’s saying, but, rather, offers every child a rich, rewarding, and unique learning
experience. Gallagher (1998)
First of all, as a teacher I would use technology as a tool to make my lessons
interesting for my students. With the prior knowledge, I would do a power point ‘game show
review’ based on famous game shows, including ‘Jeopardy’ and ‘who wants to be a
millionaire?’ This type of activities would be fun to practice using projector and get my
students to review important materials related to the specific lesson. Besides this activity, I
would also let my students to listen to podcast. Before I proceed with my lesson, I would
search for one podcast from any websites that meet my students’ needs. By listening to such
podcast they would feel interesting on studying more on the lesson.
Furthermore, students would feel interesting when the lesson get fun with physical
activities such as dancing. I would play many songs which related to the specific lesson that
I teach them and would give them the opportunity to dance in the class before the lesson

starts. This could motivate them to learn further about the lesson. During the lesson, I would
group them into groups and let them interact with each other. Besides that, I would also give
them a better chance to perform a role play in front of the class. These activities would make
them happy and found education as centre of lifelong learning and would not conclude that
schools are just brick and mortar structures where they could truant their classes all day
long.
2.3

Students are isolated by classmates

Students are the key of nation. What would be if they are getting discriminated and
getting thrown away to the corner of the class? According to Edwards (2004), children tend
to fall into four basic social categories in the school setting and one of it would be isolated
where students are not openly rejected but are ignored by classmates and are uninvolved in
the social aspects of school. This would be one of the causes where students tend to truant
their classes or even school and get away to do their own work.
As an effective educator, I would have the mindful of simple fact that children are
going to school for a living and not to suffer. Firstly, I would just figure out why the specific
student is being isolated and I would observe the child in different settings at school, maybe
during recess or even during other classes with other teachers. Moreover, I would speak out
about this to some other trustworthy students who are studying in the same class. By this, I
maybe could gather some information about the student and would try to help him or her
personally.
Furthermore, I could try to coach the student in social skills such as raising the
specific student’s social intelligence by having a private talk with him. Besides that, I could
even start an interaction with him or her by asking to play some sort of games or activities
with me such as playing badminton or even playing a board game. By this I could help the
specific children to have a comfortable talk with me. I could even share some ideas for topics
to talk with classmates and encourage him to have a good social skills with those
surrounded the student.
Last but not least, I could even arrange a better social interaction period for the
specific student with his or her classmates. I would also find interesting activities such as ice
breaking so that the student could interact with other students successfully without any
hesitation. Besides that, I could also ask for help from other students to invite the specific
student to play during recess time or even join them during lunch. Furthermore, I may even
split students into groups for an academic activity and have them meet outside of the
classroom to complete the task that had been assigned to them. By this students who are

isolated could foster a better relationship with their classmates and would not truant the
class just because they are getting discriminated by their peers.
3.0 Conclusion
Teachers are those who share responsibility in preparing young people who are
going to lead the nation with a successful and productive life. Thus it is the teachers
significant responsibility in overcoming disciplinary problems and problematic behaviour in
the classroom before the situation become chronic where millions of young possibly heading
towards academic failure and perhaps end up on the streets.
