Advice for College Students

College is an extremely important time in the lives of most men and women. After all, we’ve been told that anyone who goes to University, and that the adult world demands degrees, diplomas, and other fancy pieces of paper. We’re told that, if we’re good at what we do, we must prove so – and that only that piece of paper demonstrates our quality. And so, we break our backs, splinter our minds, and poison our bodies with coffee and Cup O’ Noodles – doing whatever it takes to excel, because (we’re told) it is not only enough to get that paper, but because we must work harder than anyone else in order to obtain it.

I will tell you here and now, this is a farce. It is, perhaps, the most bought into hoax in all of mankind. All the world of academia is a carnival game, and we’re all suckers. Of course, I’m not trying to convince the lot of you to throw caution to the wind and abstain from higher learning. The truth is that college is important to the outside world, and without it you will have a difficult time going much of anywhere without a degree. However: Now that I have gone through the first few years of integration into “the real world”, I want to share some important advice for college students. I wish I had known it during college. They have all been learned after dedicating a great deal of trial and error, tremendous pain and bother, and a modicum of pride. I won’t be able to help you with the last two on that list, but I can promise to save you from having to make unnecessary mistakes that will cost you several months – maybe even years – of your post-college existence.

WORK HARD, BUT SOCIALIZE HARDER
No matter what career you plan on entering, it is undeniable that the men and women who will control your destiny will demand a knowledgeable, hard-working addition to their team. At the same

time, these same demanding men and women want someone who isn’t socially inept. In fact, higher-ups prefer employees that are educated and fun over employees that are educated and dull. The key is to be as personable as possible. Personable is just a fancy short-hand for “Worth keeping around”. If you learn how to be as easy-going and pleasant as possible, you’ll stand a better chance moving up in whatever job you pursue.

DO THE WORK
The dirty little secret within all colleges is that you aren’t there to prove your intellectual worth, so much as you are there to demonstrate your endurance level. Now, I don’t mean “endurance” as it pertains to running, jumping, boxing, or other physical things. I mean you are being tested on your mental, emotional, and spiritual endurance. College, like life, is a never-ending obstacle course. You’re being trained to jump through hoops, first and foremost – and, yeah, you’ll dissect Walden and the human anatomy on the side, but that’s incidental. Look at how every department is set up: From the constant ups and downs within the financial aid department, the ineptitude of the

secretarial staff, and even down to the ridiculous rules you have to obey within the dormitories… how can colleges function with such disconnect between the students and the available (often necessary) resources? Believe it or not, “the real world” functions much less efficiently. For every hoop college forces you to jump through, life will give you ten. I’m absolutely serious! If it weren’t for the 4(+) years of training we receive during college, not a one of us would make it through life without tripping over all of its challenges. If you are finding yourselves overwhelmed at the number of ridiculous demands, pitfalls, and booby-traps academia is notorious for offering, well… Well, you’re going to need to toughen up. Do the work, juggle the loads, and never – ever – stop jumping.

RELAX!
The best advice I can give to students is to calm down. You’re entirely capable of doing whatever your university asks of you. After all, you got accepted in the first place. You also managed to find the money to pay for your stay. Those two steps are, in fact, the most daunting and difficult tasks you will face during your educational career.

Your plate may be full most of the days, but that is much better than fishing for scraps. Most of you will likely be licking empty plates for the first year post-college, so relish in your workload while you have it. The methods you use in order to help with this mission are varied and plentiful. For starters: • Meditate • Take dance classes • Listen to Binaural Beats while you sleep • Study while taking a hot bath • So on… College is nothing compared to juggling job searching, moonlighting, freelancing, and worrying about repaying student loans while attempting to stay fed.

If you can take nothing else away from this diatribe, at least remember this: College, for all of its ups and downs, is more to be experienced than it is to be suffered. Through times both good and bad, jovial or sad… Your life will never present you with an experience like college again. Work hard, but don’t take it too seriously.
