Air conditioning
Much research was done on the air conditioning plant which has been installed under the eastern edge of the Amphitheatre. Various types of systems were rejected in favour of what is called the Freon R-22 system. Chilled water is transported by underground pipes to the Matrimandir and up the north and south pillars to air cooling coils near the Chamber. The cooled air is blown into the Chamber through four grilles located in the ceiling, and will leave the Chamber through slots at floor level, into ducts leading to the north and south pillars where the air-handling unit will return the filtered air mixed with some outside air. It will then pass through the chilled water coil to be re-cooled and dehumidified and eventually be sent back to the grilles by two fans.

The columns
The columns arrived at Matrimandir in the beginning of January 1990.They were 24-inch diameter, galvanised, seamless steel pipes, 8.65 mtr long, weighing 830 kg each. The painting job appeared straightforward and the first two were done completely in a couple of months. A dedicated team started putting in extra time, a few infra-red lights appeared to help the drying, and then even an electric polishing machine arrived to speed up the work. There are an average of 15 coats of paint on each column with finer and finer sanding between coats after which the final polishing was done.

The gold discs

The carpet
The carpet in the meditation chamber was woven in Agra using a blend of the finest Merino wool imported from New Zealand. This project was completed under the skillful guidance of Mr. Meattle of India Carpets and Furnishing Company, one of India's top carpet makers. It took 6 months to weave the twelve sections (and two spare pieces) which cover the entire floor area of the Chamber. The manufacturing was done on a specially designed handloom using the Wilton weaving system. This system gives a carpet all the good qualities of a machine-made carpet as well as the special qualities of a handmade one.

THE ANCIENT GEOMETRY Pyramid….. t is well known that the Great Pyramid has a profound effect on man and matter. Experiments carried out in the last two decades have shown that the room inside the Great Pyramid influences the physical, chemical and biological processes of any object brought into it. Research has shown that this is due to the proportions of the pyramid, to the location of the room in the pyramid, and to the proportions of the room itself. The geometry of the Great Pyramid is based on the Golden Section. This section has been made visible in the drawing by means of the horizontal line that intersects with the sloping lines marked with a: (refer fig: 1) This pyramid was built by people who had an insight into cosmic movements and it was intended to be a space and form through which Knowledge on Man's place in the spiral of Evolution could be passed down to future generations. Analysing Matrimandir in this light led to some interesting results - especially because it is not a conventional building in any sense. It is the realisation of a vision of the Mother, built on the faith and conviction of people of diverse backgrounds who believe in its importance. NOW MATRIMANDIR WITH RESPECT TO IT…. the Golden Section and the proportions of the Great Pyramid are precisely incorporated in its cross section. it was also that Sri Aurobindo's symbol fitted exactly into the Shalagram, the form in which Matrimandir has been built (fig.2). there are two triangles with the same proportions as the Great Pyramid inside the Shalagram. The energy field inside the Great Pyramid is located at one-third of its height (the place where the King's Chamber is situated). If we project this to the two triangles inside the Shalagram, we get a band of about 110 centimeters where the energy field will be concentrated. This band will be in the Inner Chamber, precisely where the people will sit. fig 3.)

• One has to walk counter-clockwise to visit the twelve gardens in the proper sequence (starting with Sat, Chit, Ananda and ending with Perfection). • One has to walk counter-clockwise to visit the twelve rooms inside the ‘Petals’ in the proper sequence (starting with Sincerity, Humility and ending with Peace). • One has to walk counter-clockwise to climb up the stairs between Matrimandir’s first and second levels. • One has to walk counter-clockwise to climb up the spiral ramps between Matrimandir’s second level and its Inner Chamber level. this is contrary to the Hindu tradition which requires people to walk clockwise around a temple or shrine. There is no record of any explanation for this counter-clockwise rotation.
