About the community
For thousands of years Albany has been the home of the Menang Noongar people. “Discovered” by the Dutch in 1626, claimed by Britain in 1771, and founded as a town in 1826, Albany is the first European settlement in Western Australia with many buildings of historic significance.

Albany has a strong maritime heritage and is renowned for its commercial whaling which ceased in 1978. The Albany Port is a major exporter and cruise ship berth. Today, the city of Albany has a population of approximately 34,000 people and the economy is driven mostly by the agriculture, tourism, timber production, fishing, viticulture, and aquaculture and horticulture industries. The region boasts five award winning wine districts and reportedly the best farmers market in Australia. It is a popular tourist destination all year round with spectacular wildflower displays a must see during the Spring months.
