TECHNICAL ALERT

Subject: Powell Vacuum Circuit Breaker Modification Program Alert No: 4 Date:

June 23, 2001

SUMMARY WESCOSA agreed to implement a circuit breaker modification program to rectify problems with Powl_Vac circuit breakers highlighted in Technical Alert No. 35, 1999. This involves all Powl_Vac circuit breakers manufactured since about 1992 used in 5 and 15 kV switchgear manufactured by WESCOSA and Powell Electric. The circuit breaker modification program will include the following: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Replacement of solid end caps with slotted design Full inspection of all insulator supports (top and bottom of each pole unit) and the replacement of any damaged insulators Inspect the closing spring centering plate welds and repair as necessary Install strut kits on the vacuum interrupters Apply epoxy fix to Cutler-Hammer vacuum bottles used in some breakers Verify/inspect for correctness of installed pushrods Record location, serial number, and reading of operations counter of each repaired circuit breaker

ACTION CSD agreed to coordinate this program. To ensure the program is completed in a timely manner and to minimize the burden placed on your facility please complete the attached Equipment Data Sheet (Attachment #1) and return it to Tom Crum, E 7840, Dhahran, phone 874-6159. It is important that a specific person be designated to coordinate the repair activity within the facility. A partial list of Powell circuit breakers supplied to various Saudi Aramco facilities is included in Attachment #2 for reference purposes.
