Alternative fuels to diesel:
Nowadays the biodiesel such as vegetable oils are being used in combination
with diesel engine to improve the performance of the engine and reduce
emissions for instance CO, CO2 and HC. In most of the experiments it was found
out that the only emission which increased is NO 2 which is due to more oxygen
content in biodiesels. However there are some ways to eliminate NO x emissions
for instance, Szybist et al suggested increase in methyl-oleate and increasing
cetane by hanging the chemical composition of the Biodiesel. Also Boehman et al
and Kegl recommended that in order to decrease NO x emission the injecting
timing can be delayed [4].
Biodiesels have advantage over the other alternative fuels such as ethanol,
hydrogen, etc. Almost all the existing diesel engine can run with 20% addition of
biodiesel some slight modifications can be done in order to run engine on 100%
biodiesel fuel [4].
S. Oberweis et al conducted experiment on the effect of blending biodiesel on
emissions and efficiency of the stationary diesel engine. The rapeseed oil
biodiesel was blended with diesel fuel and It was observed that the emissions of
CO2 for blended fuel was lower compared to diesel fuels. The NO x emissions
increased for blended fuels due to more presence of Oxygen. More power was
produced with the use of biodiesel blend [5].
