Key processes to be followed
Ensure area around saw is free of offcuts, debris and metal chips and swarf.
Inspect blade for damage (e.g., worn, broken or missing teeth).
Ensure that mating surfaces of vice or work clamps are clean of swarf.
Check that vice or clamps operate freely and clamp work pieces securely.
Switch machine off and remove plug before adjusting or setting up saw.
Use brush to clean swarf from table, saw and vice or clamps before set up.
With saw turned off, lower blade to touch stock, and measure from blade to
end with metal rule or sample piece.
Ensure that guard operates correctly and closes immediately when saw is lifted.
Clamp work to be cut securely in vice or with work clamps.
Turn saw on, and pull blade down to slowly contact piece to be cut.
Using steady (but not excessive) pressure, allow blade to cut through metal at
its own rate. Wear hearing protection when cutting metal with saw.
If blade “chatters”, stop machine and check blade for damage, and that stock
piece is firmly held in vice or work clamps.
Avoid handling cut ends of metal pieces – use close fitting gloves only.
Secure stock and cut pieces against falling from cutting bench.
Keep floor around saw clear of metal chips, offcuts and scrap pieces.
Switch off and unplug machine before carrying out maintenance.
Ensure that replacement blade is correct type, fitted in correct direction,
mounted firmly and that nut is correctly tightened before reusing machine.
Clean all surfaces of saw, bench, stock table, vices and clamps after use.
Wear double eye protection if using compressed air to clean saw guard.
