The companies reacted in different ways, and ultimately, Ericsson did not do well, quitting the mobile phone business and allowing Nokia to win over the European market. While Ericsson had tied up all of its key components in a single source and planned to wait out the problem with the fire, Nokia worked to snatch up spare chips from other plants and suppliers, as well as reengineered some of their phones to adapt to different chips from new suppliers. It's not hard to imagine what happened after that. Nokia kept trucking along, while Ericsson suffered from months of lost production and sales, allowing the market to be dominated by Nokia. This incident and fallout is a classic lesson in supply chain risk management. Answer the following question. Q1. Discuss on the consequences of disruption in supply chain management. Q2. How Nokia managed the risk in supply chain management. Debate CASE STUDY (20 Marks) South Korea was leading the broadband revolution with its high speed broadband networks. The initiatives by the government, its policy on competition, the PC bang culture and above all, other social and demographic factors had equally contributed to the broadband penetration in the country. With the high speed broadband networks, South Korea was embarking on new applications of broadband that would improve the lives of the people apart from contributing to the country's GDP (gross domestic product). On the other hand, the US, which is said to have pioneered Internet technology in the world, is far behind in the broadband race. The government policy on competition had been hindering competition in the country, and had encouraged Bell Inc. to enjoy a monopoly for several years. Answer the following question. Q1. Discuss the factors that had facilitated the growth of broadband in South Korea and the causes that had been impeding the growth of broadband services in the US Q2. Analyze the broadband penetration in South Korea and the US. CASE STUDY (20 Marks) Connex’s environmental mandate to use energy and resources wisely was achieved by implementing Prima Consulting’s Sustainability Management solution – Sustainability SCO2recard. All relevant data is collected in a centralized database which enables Connex to automatically monitor and assess its carbon emissions. The cost of carbon has been minimized at four levels: • Reduced energy consumption bills. • Reduced administration overheads. • Compliance with NGER, EREP & GRI legislation. • A reduction in the number of carbon permits that need to be purchased. Utilizing carbon management software to automate reliable, accurate reporting and financial forecasting is essential to enable organizations to understand the impacts of possible ‘whatif’ scenarios. It also provides an invaluable resource for the benchmarking of emission reduction initiatives over time, providing tangible results that demonstrate improvements made. Featured Organizations Connex is Australia’s largest commuter rail network which operates 331 train fleet, travelling across 15 train lines to provide 12,664 services to the people of Melbourne each week. Prima Consulting is a professional services company that specializes in Information Management. Prima Consulting provides services to major Australian organizations as well as key government departments. The Problem to be Addressed Connex has an environmental mandate to use energy and resources wisely and as such, required a framework to support an ongoing commercial strategy for the integration of Carbon Management. Tracking consumption and emissions obligations under the current National Greenhouse Emission Reporting (NGER) was creating a mass of data entry, with up to 70 percent of Connex’s sustainability department’s time being spent on collating reports. Connex’s obligations include adhering to the Australian Governments greenhouse gas reporting system (OSCAR) and meeting the Victorian Government’s requirements for an Environment and Resource Efficiency Plan (EREP), whilst keeping the long term view of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) for Sustainability Reporting. Answer the following question. Q1. How Prima Consulting’s Sustainability Management solution helped Connex in sustainability? Explain Q2. Discuss the role played by Connex in relation to NGER, OSCAR and GRI. CASE STUDY (20Marks) The Three Gorges Dam in China is one of the world's largest hydroelectric dams, providing energy for millions of people. However, the dam's construction forever altered the Yangtze River ecosystem and the lives of local residents. In this case study, students explore the complex and interrelated issues associated with large eco system maltering projects like dams and develop a persuasive argument for or against their construction. Do the benefits from a dam outweigh the ecological, economic, and social costs? Answering this question is difficult, since the benefits and costs are not directly comparable. How do you compare the loss of endemic species to the increased safety from flooding? How do you weigh a relocated family's social and economic costs in comparison to the benefits of a sustainable and renewable energy source? Although this case was developed for an undergraduate course in fisheries management, it would also be directly applicable to courses in ecology, environmental engineering, or global issues. Answer the following question. Q1. Discuss and evaluate information related to ecological, economic, or social aspects of dam construction. Q2. Debate a persuasive argument for or against dam construction.
