Exploiting Bluetooth on Android Mobile
Devices for Home Security and Automation.
ABSTRACT

The project aims in designing a system which makes operating of electrical
appliances in college through Android mobile phone possible. The controlling
of electrical appliances is done wirelessly through Android smart phone using
the Bluetooth feature present in it. Here in this project the Android smart
phone is used as a remote control for operating the electrical appliances.
Another feature is

to control a robotic vehicle using an android

application. Bluetooth device is interfaced to the control unit on the robot for
sensing the signals transmitted by the android application. This data is
conveyed to the control unit which moves the robot as desired. An 8051
series microcontroller is used in this project as control device. PIR sensor is
used for security application.
Remote operation is achieved by any smart-phone/Tablet etc.,
with Android OS, upon a GUI (Graphical User Interface) based touch screen
operation. This project uses a microcontroller from 8051 family which is
interfaced through a Bluetooth device, which receives signal from Android
application device for increasing or decreasing the AC power to the load. A
lamp is used in place of an induction motor whose varying intensity
demonstrates the varying power to the motor. The varying power results in
variation in speed of the motor.

INTRODUCTION
The advancement of technology and the evolution of the information
home appliances, such as TVs, air conditioners, sound and stereo systems,
wireless phones, and so forth, the remote controllers dazzling our eyes still
have not reached a unified model or style. In view of this fact, we propose an
environment controller combining the Bluetooth technology. Along with
Bluetooth transmission via radio wave, we can break through those space
barriers existing in our housing structure comprising multiple separating
objects. The system design is as follows: microcontroller and Bluetooth
module.
Bluetooth is a wireless technology that is composed of hardware,
software, and interoperability requirements. Bluetooth is “A specification for
short-range radio links between mobile computers, mobile phones, digital
cameras, and other portable devices.” It has been adopted not only by all
major players in the telecom, computer and home entertainment industry,
but also in such diverse areas as the automotive industry, health care,
automation, and toy industries
Bluetooth communication pattern comes with excellent feature of
robust(strong) digital communication. This can enable variable bit rate for
desired purposes like voice or data. We are opting for data transmission in the
order of 9600 bps which exchange ASCII values.

SYSTEM DESIGN:
Bluetooth on Android Mobile Devices:
Bluetooth is a wireless communications system intended to replace cables on
devices such as phones and other mobile devices. It originally was
developed in 1994 to replace serial connections via RS-232 cables. It gets
its name from a Scandinavian king that united the Danes, because it is
meant to unify communication protocols over short range into a single
protocol. Bluetooth technology features low power consumption, low cost,
and security. It operates in the ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) Band of
2.4-2.83 GHz. Bluetooth has three different classes based on power
consumption and effective range. The Bluetooth protocol allows for seven
devices to be linked to a master device in a piconet based on a
master/slave relationship.
While a piconet acts as an infrastructure mode network, multiple piconets
can create an ad hoc network because the master of one piconet can be
a slave in another. To avoid interference and collisions, Bluetooth uses an
adaptive

pseudo-random

frequency

hopping

technology

that

is

synchronized to the master’s clock. Bluetooth offers four security modes
based on use of a mutual pin entered into both devices. Authentication
and encryption/decryption keys are made after devices are paired with
the appropriate pin. Bluetooth development capability was officially
added to the Android operating system with the release of the Android
2.1 API. Before this release, there was an API add-on for developers who
wished to use Bluetooth in their applications, but has fallen out of use in
favor of the official Bluetooth API software. To use Bluetooth in an
application, a developer must declare the Bluetooth and Bluetooth ADMIN

permissions in the application. Users will be notified of these permissions
before

download

and must

allow

these permissions

to

continue

downloading the application.

OPERATION SYSTEM:
The development of this project is divided into two main parts; the first part
is the development in the Android phone as the controller for this project.
The second part is the development of a Bluetooth server unit where the
function that is selected by the user would be received. The second part of
development has three subsets which would be the Bluetooth component,
the ATMEL AT89S52 microcontroller unit and the relay circuit.
This project called for an Android smart phone or tablet with Bluetooth
capabilities and a microcontroller security interface on the door to be
secured. The in-home applinces control system. An Infra-Red sensor, Flame
sensor, microcontroller was chosen for this project for the ease of
programming and ability to quickly prototype. A BlueSmirf gold Bluetooth
transceiver was chosen for communication

Development of Electrical Appliance Controlling System
using Bluetooth Technology.
M. Shafanizam, Y. Z. Arief, Z. Adzis
Abstract—the use of electronic controllers for controlling electrical home
appliances can be found widely around the world especially in the
developed countries. By time, wireless technology such as infrared light
communication. This wireless technology is widely commercialized and
can be found almost anywhere. Though appealing, it still has a weakness
due to the use of infrared light as data transmission medium. When there
are objects blocking the infrared receiver, the process of controlling those
electrical appliances becomes difficult due to the point-to-point or line-ofsight communication mode. From this situation, came the idea to create a
wireless electronic control system utilizing Bluetooth technology for data
transfer and control of electrical appliances. PIC 16F877A microcontroller
acts as a “brain” for this system in executing the tasks and operations
according to the user’s wish. This system’s Graphical User Interface (GUI)
is developed using Microsoft Visual Basic Express to enable the user to
control and understand the system in controlling electrical appliances
easily.

Advantages:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Smart phone provides help and assistance especially to disabled and elderly.
In order to provide safety protection to the user.
A low voltage activating switches is replaced current electrical switches.
Implementation of wireless Bluetooth connection in control board allows the system

install in more simple way.
5. This low cost system is designed to improve the standard living in home.

Conclusion
In conclusion, based on the evidence from this research that the Bluetooth technology is
definitely a technology with valuable uses in today’s world. If the technology itself continues to
go unchallenged in the market, even though it possesses its drawbacks, it will grab a large share of
the wireless device market. With the backing of all the companies that have put money into
researching and developing Bluetooth products, it will be a extremely difficult obstacle for any
emerging technology to overcome.

Future Scope

Bluetooth is also itself getting better. The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) is
always working on a new version of specifications. They are currently on version 1.1. Also there
is a group called Radio2 that is working on the problems Bluetooth has with bandwidth,
interference, and connection setup issues. If the Radio2 group can significantly increase the
bandwidth, significantly decrease the interference with other technologies, and also correct most
of the connection setup issues, there will certainly be a future for Bluetooth. All the while they
are keeping it backward compatible with the current version. If this can be done, Bluetooth will
be able to compete well with the performance of new emerging technologies.
