enrollment records set in fall and spring semesters
Missouri State university-West plains set a new enrollment record for the Fall 2008 semester, breaking 1,800 students for the first time in university history. Final enrollment figures show 1,834 students were enrolled, a 4 percent increase over the record-breaking tally for the Fall 2007 semester. enrollment also was up in the spring and summer semesters. Another enrollment record was set in the Spring 2009 semester with a 7 percent increase in headcount and credit hour production over the Spring 2008 semester. enrollment was up 2 percent in the summer semester, with a credit hour increase of 10 percent. the record-breaking enrollment trend continued in the 2009-2010 academic year when Missouri State-West plains surpassed the 2,000 milestone with 2,162 students enrolled for the Fall 2009 semester.
Missouri State-West plains recognized by “the Great Colleges to Work For”® program
Missouri State-West plains has been recognized by “the Great Colleges to Work For”® program sponsored by The Chronicle for Higher Education. the West plains Campus was recognized in eight out of the 15 categories for two-year institutions. Missouri State-West plains also was named to the Honor Roll for small two-year institutions (2,999 students or less). the Honor Roll lists the top three colleges in each size category for two-year institutions based on the number of times they were recognized in the individual categories.
SAAS’ tutor training program recertified
the tutor training program at the Student Advisement and Academic Support Center received recertification in the Spring 2009 semester from the College Reading and learning Association’s (CRlA) International tutor Certification program. the length of the recertification was for five years, the maximum awarded by the certification program. Recertification ensures students are receiving help from tutors who are at the top of their game.
Increasing Global Awareness
Students travel to Belize, China and Great Britain
• • • • eleven students experienced life in a developing country when they participated in a study abroad trip to Belize during the Summer 2008 Intersession. eighteen honors program students participated in a study abroad trip to China during spring break. nine honors program students traveled to Great Britain at the end of the 2009 spring semester for an Honors Abroad study tour. this year’s SGA president traveled to China to tour the campus and meet with students.
International students from nine countries
ten international students from tanzania, Croatia, latvia, poland, Brazil, Kenya, Canada, pakistan and South Korea were enrolled for the Fall 2008 semester.
China Branch Campus
three students attended classes and served as student interns for a semester at the China Branch Campus in Dalian, China.

Corps of opportunity scholarship program endowment established
An endowment for the Corps of opportunity scholarship program was established thanks to a generous gift from William and Virginia Darr and an estate gift of nearly $300,000 from the late Robert and Adeline Moore. the Corps of opportunity program combines scholarships and on-campus work opportunities for qualified students who need financial help to pay for their college education.
non-traditional Book Scholarship established
A new scholarship helps non-traditional students purchase their books for classes. the non-traditional Student Book Scholarship gives students age 22 or over who are entering Missouri State-West plains for the first time up to $250 to help cover the costs of their required books. the scholarship was offered for the first time in the Fall 2009 semester.

tuition remains the same
Students at Missouri State university-West plains will not have to pay more in tuition to take courses at the university during the 2009-10 academic year. At their April meeting, members of the Missouri State university Board of Governors agreed to keep tuition at Missouri State-West plains at $102 per credit hour for in-state students and $204 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Specialized courses for the Associate of Science in nursing and Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory therapy programs also will remain at $130 per credit hour for in-state students and $260 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Missouri State-West plains has not raised tuition for two consecutive years, and FY10 will be the third.
ReneW scholarship program established
Missouri State-West plains announced a new scholarship program designed to help area residents who have recently lost their jobs due to the economic crisis. the Renewed employability now education Waiver (ReneW) Scholarship program provides up to $375 per semester for part-time students who take six to 11 credit hours and $675 per semester to full-time students who take 12 or more credit hours. twenty such scholarships were available for the Fall 2009 semester, and they can be renewed for the Spring 2010 semester for recipients who maintain satisfactory academic progress.

entrepreneurship program endowment established
the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in entrepreneurship degree program at Missouri State university-West plains received a financial boost in the Fall 2008 semester with the establishment of the Wendell Bailey entrepreneurship program endowment. the $100,000 endowment was named in honor of the former Missouri State treasurer, state representative and Congressman from Willow Springs who recommended the university develop an entrepreneurship program as a way to help students find careers in business and boost the area’s economy. A former small business owner, Bailey now serves as the Region VII Advocate for the Small Business Administration. Money from the endowment will supplement the AAS in entrepreneurship degree program by providing funds for guest speakers, attendance by faculty and students at conferences, visits by faculty and students to area businesses that represent the entrepreneurial spirit, the development of a Students In Free enterprise (SIFe) team, and marketing of the program to potential students.
Honors professorship established
the promise of an annual gift for the next five years from the philanthropic Women for education organization will lead to a professorship in the William and Virginia Darr Honors program at Missouri State university-West plains. In August 2008, members of the organization agreed that the group would contribute $11,250 each year for the next five years toward the professorship. the annual contribution would be used to augment the salary of the professorship while university officials use the next five years to search for a donor or organization that would fully endow the position. Assistant to the Chancellor Dennis lancaster, who founded the honors program at Missouri State-West plains in 1998 and has served as an adjunct faculty member, moved from his administrative role to fill the professorship in January 2009.
Missouri State-West plains to receive Caring for Missourians funds
Missouri State university-West plains received notification in June that the institution will receive $170,000 in 2009-10 to fund additional students in its Associate of Science in nursing (ASn) degree program. the additional funding is part of the $40 million statewide initiative called Caring for Missourians. the funds will cover the costs of training up to 20 additional nursing students in a second admission/class cycle beginning in January 2010 and ending in December 2011.
College Access Challenge Grant awarded
Missouri State university-West plains has been awarded a $99,173 College Access Challenge Grant through the Missouri Department of Higher education to help fund its “project threshold” program designed to help students, prospective students and their families learn about, prepare for and finance a postsecondary education. university officials received word in May the grant was approved for one year, and university officials can apply for renewal for a second year.

Associate’s Degrees
• At the end of the 2009 summer session, approximately 3,200 students had received an associate’s degree from Missouri StateWest plains. • the “College Board: education pays 2007” report shows someone with an associate’s degree can expect to earn on average $1.6 million over his or her lifetime, while high school graduates earn on average $1.3 million. • Based on these numbers, the 3,200 graduates have the potential to earn $1 billion more than their counterparts with only a high school diploma. • that’s $1 billion more in additional buying power, investment opportunity, and local, state and federal taxes that support our roads, schools, government and national defense.
Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees
• the figures quoted above do not include the 400 people who have received a bachelor’s or master’s degree through the Missouri State university’s Academic outreach program on our campus. • the same College Board report shows a person with a bachelor’s degree or higher can expect to earn $2.3 million over a lifetime. that represents another $400 million in buying power.

Impact on Community & Students
Campus Budget
• the 2008-2009 Missouri State-West plains budget had operating revenues (including auxiliaries) of approximately $9.5 million – 54 percent from state appropriations and 46 percent from tuition, fees and other sources. • the budget covered the salary of 257 full-time and part-time employees, most of whom are area residents. those 257 employees have a combined salary that totals $5.5 million, most of which is spent locally. • university employees and students also volunteer around 8,500 hours annually on community causes. Minimum wage for those hours would add up to almost $60,000. • Recent construction projects were contracted with four different area companies that totaled $75,000. • Grants acquired by the university during the past year for educational programs amounted close to $130,000.
Student Spending
• the campus brings in approximately 2,000 students annually who spend approximately $250 a month for 10 months on food, gasoline and other needs in West plains, totaling $5 million in local spending.
Financial Aid
• In 2008-09, students were awarded almost $8 million in financial aid, $300,000 of which came from institutional scholarships. university charges for tuition and fees only totaled $3.6 million. this means $4.4 million went back into the local economy.
The NJCAA National Volleyball Tournament has the potential to bring in more than $100,000 to the local economy. Athletics
• During 2008-09, Grizzly Athletics hosted eight home volleyball dates and 15 home basketball games. Attendance at these 23 competitions attracted almost 26,000 fans, many of whom came from outside West plains. In addition, many of the visiting teams used lodging and purchased food in West plains. • Athletic event numbers will increase when Missouri State-West plains hosts the nJCAA Division I Women’s national Volleyball Championship tournament, which returns to West plains for a three-year run beginning in november 2010. the event will draw 16 teams with an average of 25 players, coaches and other school personnel to West plains for four days. During that time, they will spend $60-$65 per day in West plains, totaling $100,000. economists point out that $1 spent on such an activity is turned over numerous times in the community.
university/Community programs
• the coordinator of u/Cp’s Small Business and technology Development Center counseled 62 local entrepreneurs resulting in seven new businesses, 239 new jobs, $1.1 million of financial investment in the area, and $1.5 million in increased sales in the community. • While the figures given so far are calculable examples of the university’s impact, there are other incalculable impacts that are just as important. With a $300,000 investment from the university, in addition to grants and ticket sales, the u/Cp Department brings in a variety of cultural programs and performances, such as this year’s concert by the St. louis Jazz orchestra and last year’s Vienna Boys Choir concert, which area residents would have been unable to see without traveling a great distance.
