15 15 History
Map of Antwerp in 1883, with “Wijk ‘t Zuid” still as
a masterplan.
Our direct design site used to be old shipping
docks. A large number of coal and sand barges of-
ten moored here. But because of the dozens of
hshing boats dilivering their large cargo´s of mus-
sels, the docks were soon called the Mussel Quay.
The activity attracted secondary activities and in no
time the docks were packed with hshing and ma-
rine shops and cafes of course. This beautiful pe-
riod lasted barely 87 years.

History
16
In 1950´s the Zuiderdokken (Southern docks) be-
came to small for the bigger ships used at that
time. The city council decided to damp the docks.
In 1967 the last barge left the docks.
The silo´s were mostly kept intact and had a differ-
ent destination: dwelling blocks, workshops, tav-
erns, restaurants and garage´s. The Museum of
Contemporary Art Antwerp (Mukha) got it´s place in
an old grain silo at Louvain Street, which leads to
the Waalsekaai and muted Schippersdok and sec-
ondly to Cockerillkaai.

Nowadays the “Zuiderdokken” are used as big
parking lots where big events take place like carni-
vals and circuses. Among these events is the annu-
al “Sinksenfoor”, a big fair on the day we call Pink-
steren (Pentecost or Whitsun holiday).
The docks also house big cultural events like these
art exhibitions. And the 0110 Antwerp concerts
where held here as well.

The held is a base layer consisting of buildings
with a uniform height and density, collective ele-
ments on a local level, which are linearly arranged
whithin the infrastructural network, formed by the
quays, the current Singel and the future Green Sin-
gel. On the site itself, one set of roads runs straight
through the site in a Northeast to Southwest di-
rection, always maintaining visual contact with the
river. A subordinate set interconnects these main
roads.
The exceptions on the continuïty of the held ac-
comodate funcions on the level of the city. They
extend the existing logic of elements in the tis-
sue of the city: Museumsite, park, zuiderdokken,…
Whithin the site, they serve as cores for develop-
ment.”
