Keeping up-to-date
with your child’s
online behavior
With the widespread use of smartphones among preteens and teens, the district is finding a number of mobile apps that
are a distraction in the classroom and are being used for cyberbullying, sexting and accessing pornography, all of which
are prohibited in schools. We strongly recommend that all parents be proactive in monitoring smartphone and tablet use.
With that in mind, parents should be aware of these popular apps:

Kik
Instant messaging app that acts as a
free texting app; no parental controls;
becoming a common avenue for sexting

Vine
Twitter app that allows users to create
and share six-second videos; Twitter
raised minimum age limit to 17+ for Vine
after pornographic clips began appearing;
a “kid-friendly” version of the app exists
where young children can view videos
that have been vetted by developers

Yik Yak
Allows users to post anonymous comments to other users in a 10 mile radius;
used for threats/bullying; app was
intended for “college-age and above”

Ask.fm
Allows users to ask questions from
other Ask.fm users with the option of
anonymity; often used for cyberbulling

Keek
Facebook

Poof
Allows users to hide apps from their
screen

Tinder
Online dating app; allows users 12+;
intended to match users in a geographic area for dates

While Facebook does restrict pornagraphic material, links from posts use
Facebook’s in-app browser, which bypasses restricted browsers and can lead
users to pornographic websites

Allows users to upload video status
updates and share video content through
major social media networks; no privacy
settings

Whisper

Snapchat
Photo messaging app; users take
photos, record videos, add text and
drawings, and send them to recipients
with a set time limit for how long
recipients can view their “Snaps” (1 to
10 seconds), after which they will be
hidden from the recipient’s device and
deleted from servers

Instagram
Adult content can appear frequently
on this photo and video sharing app

Users submit anonymous questions or
confessions as a text over a picture;
other users are allowed to comment and
private message; carries a 17+ rating

Tumblr
Microblogging service that allows users
create content and post media on a
short-form blog; high amount of pornographic material

Twitter
Down
This app was rebranded after it was removed from iTunes; matches Facebook
friends for casual sexual encounters

Another network with worldwide
popularity, Twitter is also liable to
contain adult and other inappropriate
content in many forms; in-app browser
allows users to bypass restricted Internet browsers

Omegle & ChatRoulette
Chat services that allow anonymous users
to randomly chat with strangers using
instant messaging, video (webcam), or
microphone

JAILBREAK PROGRAMS
“Jailbreaking” and iPhone or “Rooting” and Android phone are terms for hacking one’s own device to
lift restrictions on allowable applications. Jailbroken phones can download third-party apps not sold
on he App Store or Google Play. Instructions for jailbreaking and rooting are widely available online.
Cydia (icon pictured) functions like the App Store for jailbroken phones. Users can find and install open
source software packages and purchase modifications for jailbroken phones, such as apps that allow
users to hide icons for questionable apps.

BASIC INTERNET SAFETY GUIDELINES

Keep your computer in a high-traffic area of your home.
Establish limits for which online sites your children/teens may
visit and for how long.
Surf the Internet with your children/teens and let them show
you what they like to do online.
Know who is connecting with your children/teens online and set
rules for social networking, instant messaging, emailing, online
gaming, and using webcams.
Monitor privacy settings for social networking sites.
Encourage youth to think before they post: what would family,
a prospective employer or college recruiter think of it? Most
employers search job candidates online.
Inform your children/teens that what they post is public and
permanent, even content that has been deleted.
Discussions about sex or sharing suggestive pictures may draw
attention from predators and law enforcement.
Talk to your children/teens about the risks of communicating
with people they don’t know.
Encourage youth not to respond to cyberbullying, threats or
other aggressive online behavior. Encourage them to tell an adult if they encounter online aggression. Block individuals if
necessary.
Never share passwords, not even with close friends.
Web filters only go so far in blocking unwanted content. Honest and open communication is the best tool to keep kids safe.
Encourage them to think critically about their online behavior.
Continually talk with your children/teens about online safety.
