April 2015

Over the past months, we have been observant of Sarah’s kind, caring nature with a willingness to help others all the time. This willingness to help often gets her in trouble with the teachers and other children since she breaks the rules or intervenes between other children. Thus, Sarah often gets a lot of negative attention for her kindness and willingness to help. This needed to change. Therefore, in order to change this and enhance her skills further I decided to engage her more in leadership roles, often asking her to help. Today was such a day. It was a very beautifully warm April’s day with not a single cloud insight. There was cool breeze which was a perfect combination with the hot sun. While the children applied sun block, I asked Sarah to bring the hat boxes and hand out the hats for the children. She looked at me smiling and asked “me teacher Madiha”. I replied “yes, you Sarah”. She then happiy went and got the box and then handed out the hats.

After a short while, we decided to go and visit An-Nur Academy grounds. We had lots of games and activities while there. When we decided we had had enough we lined up to come back to the classroom. I asked Sarah “can you hold the Ali and Aisha’s hands and walk them back to the classroom please”. Beamingly Sarah said “yes teacher Madiha I want to do that”. when she got closer to Sameera Sarah said to her “look Sameera I am holding your brother’s hand”. Sameera replied “I want to hold my brother’s hand”. Sarah replied back “no teacher Madiha asked me”. I said to them both “ Ali has two hands, so you can both one hand each”. “yes Sameera you hold the other hand”. Sarah made sure they made it back to the classroom before letting their hand go. As teachers we will continue to enhance Sarah’s skills and attributes through purposeful and intentional activities while at same time teaching her ways she can use her attributes and skills in proper places and time rather than breaking rules and or intervening. We will teach Sarah the skills and language that will help others understand Sarah’s intention for instance, saying “I would like to help” before helping and learning to accept others not accepting her help.
