Message from IBJ’s Founder and CEO – Karen Tse!
You are invited to join an urgent cause that is mobilizing the exceptional leadership and commitment of lawyers to strengthen the rule of law in Southeast Asia and beyond. Please join your peers in Singapore’s business and legal communities in becoming a corporate sponsor of International Bridges to Justice’s! Singapore Gala and Auction on 20 November, 2012 at the Grand Hyatt.! International Bridges to Justice (IBJ) is a non‐profit, non‐governmental organization incorporated in the United States that is dedicated to empowering lawyers to protect the basic legal rights of ordinary individuals around the world. Specifically, IBJ works to guarantee everyone in these countries the right to competent legal representation and the right to a fair trial. Within Asia, IBJ has well-established programs in China, Cambodia, and India.! We expect more than 200 guests will attend the gala, drawn from major law firms, academia, multinational corporations and the diplomatic community from both Singapore and the surrounding area. This event will provide IBJ with the resources it needs to help the Justice Training Centre continue its vital work in the region.! Your generosity as a sponsor will significantly boost IBJ’s efforts to enhance the rule of law in judicial systems in developing countries and to ensure access to justice for ordinary citizens. ! We hope you will join us in showcasing Singapore as an inspiring model for progress in the region.!

Karen I. Tse! Founder & CEO!

Who we are!

In 2010, IBJ Singapore was awarded funding from the Lien Foundation to establish a Justice Training Centre in Singapore to serve as a regional hub to manage our projects in Southeast Asia. Additionally, IBJ Singapore received a grant from the Economic Development Board under the International Organisations Development Scheme.! The Singapore Justice Training Centre draws upon Singapore’s educated and experienced legal community in promoting rule of law and access to justice in the developing countries where we have a presence. We work closely with the Law Society of Singapore and have been extremely fortunate to have hosted esteemed members of the Singaporean and international legal communities, such as Subhas Anandan of RHT Taylor Wessing and Phillip Jeyaretnam of Rodyk and Davidson, at our roundtable events and training sessions and as judges in our JusticeMakers competition.! In 2011, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), IBJ Singapore conducted the first-ever training programme of lawyers and government officials from the countries comprising ASEAN. We then partnered with the MFA to conduct a training programme of lawyers and governmental and military officials in Laos. Upcoming training events are planned in Cambodia and Myanmar, along with International Bridges to Justice’s inaugural Global Defender Forum to be held in Singapore in 2013.!

Our Vision!

We envision a world where the basic legal rights of every man, woman and child are respected in case of an arrest or judicial accusation. In particular: the right to competent legal representation, the right to be free from torture and cruel treatment, and the right to a fair trial. It is a world where the institutionalisation of fair and effective justice practices have eliminated the use of torture as the cheapest method of investigation.! A world where each and every person is knowledgeable about his/her rights and is empowered to demand that they are upheld in practice.! A world where international human rights standards and relevant local laws are brought to life in the everyday practice of justice and through the consciousness of each and every actor of the judicial system.!
