veryone knows about We Fest around here. However there is another country music festival that is closer and much more unique- the Kick’n Up Kountry Festival in Thief River Falls. Going on for seven years, the Kick’n Up Kountry has featured some of the most popular stars in country music. However, the story behind the festival is as inspirational as the festival itself. Meet Ardell Larson, CEO of Kick’n Up Kountry, Inc. Mrs. Larson is certainly one to push dreams to reality not just for her, but for others as well. Nevermind the daunting task of setting up any kind of music festival, such as finding the tremendous amount of manpower it takes, not to mention security and legal issues. Kick’n Up Kountry is the classic example for us all in which, if we will it, we can make it happen. Ardell’s days consist of delivering mail for the US Postal Service, but come this September, she is busy with her daughter, grandsons and several close friends running the annual festival. Using the festival as a vehicle, Ardell and the staff of Kick’n Up Kountry make dreams a reality for children with life-threatening illnesses. Thus, the nonprofit side of the festival has been born. This began by an individual from Larimore calling up to ask for tickets to the festival

six years ago and when he found out country superstar Neal McCoy was making an appearance, he had mentioned that Neal is his daughter’s favorite entertainer. His daughter had leukemia and this inspired Ardell to introduce Neil to the young girl. Ever since, the team at Kick’n Up Kountry has been making such moments of joy happen with the Hopes, Dreams & Smiles Fund through the Northwest Minnesota Foundation. Aside from allowing these special children to live their dreams at the fest, there are also contests for every age group. “The Little Kicker Contest” is a karaoke contest for people from preschool to high school age to compete, and there is an adult contest as well. These contests allows local talent to shine through on display. Ardell started Kick’n Up Kountry because she loves country music and she has seen how We Fest has impacted the Detroit Lakes area and she wanted to something similar further north. “I just love country music and I just thought, how cool it would be to have one up in this area,” said Larson. “My goal in starting it was to make a difference in the community.” When Kick’n Up Kountry first began seven years ago it was located in Hallock, MN, where Ardell is from. But, after three years of the event being in Hallock, Ardell had to make a tough decision. “I moved the event because I saw there was going to be a need to have more restaurants, more hotels and a bigger area,” Ardell mentioned. “Moving the event from my

Dream’n Country
home county was not easy or popular. The move to Thief River Falls has brought a lot of obstacles, but slowly we’ve been building support through the city and businesses.” Thief River Falls has everything Ardell was looking for and since the move, Kick’n Up Kountry has continuously grown.

This year’s festival features the highlytoted local favorites Heroes and Thieves and 32 Below as well as Johnny Butten –who happens to be one of the world’s best banjo players- and his band Newgrass Underground. Another star famous from the TV show American Idol, Bucky Covington, will be performing on Saturday night. Kick’n Up

Through the Hopes, Dreams, & Smiles program a child with a life-threatening illnesswas given a chance to meet Charlie Daniels at last year’s Kick’n Up Kountry. The child and family even got to go right on his bus.

“Each year it increases some. I haven’t been able to advertise like I should, but I’m getting more people who are stepping forward to help spread the word,” said Larson. “Our businesses that sponsor are expanding all the time.”

Kountry runs from September 2nd to September 5th at Thief River Falls. Find more information on their website about camping, the performers and the non-profit ventures at http://www.kicknupkountry.com.

ella Vino (Beautiful Wine) opened in downtown Grand Forks one year ago. They feature a large selection of wines for the tasting pleasure of experienced wine drinkers and those new to the world of wine. As a realtor by day, Kym Enlow showed a property downtown a year ago to a client. After some time, the client decided not to use the property and Kym got an idea of her own. “A year before I showed this property I did some wine sampling for different distributors and the majority of the people said that we needed a wine bar in downtown Grand Forks. When I showed this property to a client and it didn’t work out for him, I thought this would be a perfect wine bar,” said Enlow. “I kept hearing people say they wanted a wine bar, and I thought if I build it they’ll come.” Kym Enlow and her partner Lorrie Tweten have set up Bella Vino to be a relaxed place for anyone to come for any amount of time and enjoy the company of their party. They are always open to teach the uneducated about wine and have a lot of knowledge to offer. Their varieties of wines can be overwhelming, but Bella Vino’s staff is always willing to help you

B

chose what’s best. Along with the wine, they offer appetizers and desserts. “I have lots of varieties of wines that other places don’t have and I have the familiar names so those who aren’t wine drinkers have something their comfortable with,” Enlow said. “We have an appetizer

9 apple varieties for perfect pies

menu, dessert menu and ten or twelve different unique lahvosh.” They also offer bruschetta, spinach dip, a bread plate with different oils. Bella Vino makes everything fresh daily. Their breads come from Dakota Harvest Bakery. Their deserts consist of cheesecake and mousse. Of course no wine bar would be complete without cheese and Bella Vino’s has that covered with their meet and cheese tray. Another great thing Bella Vino offers is what they call Bella’s Blue Room. The room is separate from the main area and decorated elegantly with modern art. The room consists of one large table and is available free of charge by reservation to

anyone interested. It makes a great place for business meetings or any celebration. Since opening in June of 2009, Bella Vino has had its ups and downs. “To be totally honest business has been up and down. It just depends on what activities are going on and who’s in town or not. Grand Forks is a huge lake community, the town really empties out. But the Farmer’s market has helped a lot, and the Canadians are in town a lot on the weekends. It’s a hit and miss downtown, some days it’s busy and some days it’s not,” said Enlow. Enlow also mentioned it’s been hard to get people in Grand Forks to come in and try some wine. “Grand Forks is very conservative. People just need to come out and try it. People are so scared that wine tastes like church wine and that’s what wine is and that’s what people think. People just need to come out and try it, they need to venture out of the box,” said Enlow. If you do decide to try out Bella Vino, Kym says that their most popular wines have been the African wines and the organic wines. Bella Vino is located at 108 North 3rd Street in downtown Grand Forks.

Some apples are better made for baking than others. Here are the nine of the best to consider. Should an apple variety prove a little too soft for baking, it can always be turned into applesauce instead. 1. Granny Smith: These tart and firm apples are probably among the most turnedto for pie fillings. Mix with a sweeter apple for a different balance of flavor. 2. Jonathan: These tart, tangy apples have been favorites for pies for years. 3. Golden Delicious: Goldens are less firm than other apple varieties, so they are

I

t's apple season. What better way to showcase the delicious flavor of apples than in a pie or cake?

good for individuals who prefer a sweeter, softer pie. 4. Jonagold: If you like the taste of Golden Delicious apples and Jonathans, try this hybrid of the two. 5. Honeycrisp: These are sweet and slightly soft apples, but they won't break down much during baking. Grab these apples quickly because they have a limited window of availability. 6. Winesap: The tough skin of these apples enables them to be stored for a long

time. Plus the firm, white flesh holds up well to baking. 7. Braeburn: These apples are known for their spicy-sweet flavor. 8. Rome: These round, attractive apples have a mild flavor, but hold up well. So for a more intense apple flavor, mix Rome slices with another variety. 9. Gala: Crisp, sweet Gala apples offer the perfect balance of firmness for pies. With natural sweetness, a baker can use less sugar than with other apples.

n August 14th, Thief River Falls will host its first ever River Fest festival. Thief River Falls (TRF) is home to many events including Kick’n Up Kountry, but hasn’t had its own festival for many years. However, after a group of people who all had ideas of starting something in TRF got together, River Fest was born. “It all started when the three of us (Derek Mogen, Ben Kosharek and Ben Anderson) all got together and decided that in order for anything to happen we had to do it. Being that the Wired Been here holds cocnerts and Pioneer 90.1 has gotten the Legacy Grant to broadcast live concerts, we came up with the idea of River Fest. We don’t have much for craft festivals in the area so the crafters were interested,” said Derek Mogen, owner of the Wired Bean coffee shop in TRF. “So what it is, is a live music, arts and crafts, food festival.” The three of them got together in June to plan the festival. With great help from the TRF Parks and Recreation department, the planning was smooth. Thus far, the response from both businesses and the public has

been great. “We are expecting a lot of people. About a month ago the Times had a small paragraph about River Fest and off that one thing, a lot of people have been asking about it,” said Mogen. In its first year, River Fest will have a full day of free live music from local singers and songwriters, lots of food vendors and craft vendors. The location of River Fest is at Hartz Park which offers a large play area for kids too. Another event planned for the day is a dunk tank where participants will have the chance to dunk local celebrities yet to be named. Proceeds from the dunk tank will go towards a scholarship fund. Of course, the biggest Pictured is Little Bobby from Little Bobby & The Storm who draw for the event will be the will be playing at River Fest on August 14. food, crafts and music. River Fest will have between 30 and 50 craft ven- The food will be much the same as any fair dors displaying things like wood plaques, or festival, corn dogs, funnel cakes, mini lawn ornaments, glass ornaments, and art. donuts, sno cones, etc. River Fest will have plenty to do for kids, including face painting. The live music will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m with a live broadcast on Pioneet 90.1 from 9 a.m. to noon. The band lineup is as follows: Polka Ron & The Swingin Bobcats, Cathy Erickson Band, In a Moment, The Season, Bill Kezar, Streetlight Drive, Loose Change, Carl Unbehaun, and Little Bobby & The Storm. “Music wise it’s divided out really nice. We’ve got »the polka, bluegrass scene in the first part of the day which will draw a lot of the older listeners and then we have the local singer, songwriters in the later part of the day for the younger people,” Mogen said. River Fest is located at Hartz Park, also known as “Lover’s Lane”. “Hartz Park is located behind Dairy Queen. It’s also known as ‘Lover’s Lane’. It’s a huge park on a hill. The hill creates a natural amphitheater, so it will have great sound down there. The bandshell will be set up at the bottom of the hill and aim it towards the hill so people can sit on the hill to listen to the music,” said Mogen. River Fest will be on August 14 in Thief River Falls at Hartz Park from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Tastefully Simple CEO to speak at Women’s Expo
nother event coming to Thief River Falls for the first time this August is A Casual Affair Women’s Enrichment Expo put on by the Hospice of the Red River Valley on August 26. In its first year, the expo will be full of enrichment exhibits and will be capped off with a keynote presentaion by Jill Blashack Strahan, founder of Tastefully Simple. Born and raised in rural Minnesota, Jill grew up on her family’s farm, where she was deeply influenced by her father’s entrepreneurial spirit, “Dad was typically before his time,” she says. “He was an ideas man.”

A

In 1995, she founded Tastefully Simple on what she often calls “a dream and a shoestring.” In fact, the company started in a 1,200 square-foot shed with no running water, using a pool table as a packing station. Since then, Jill Blashack Strahan has become one of the nation's leading female entrepreneurs. As the Founder & CEO of Tastefully Simple, she has become an inspiration and role model to thousands of people across the na-

tion. Called a "CEO All Star" by Inc. magazine, Jill Blashack Strahan founded Tastefully Simple with humble beginnings and big dreams. Today this successful speaker, author, founder & CEO oversees a $140 millionplus enterprise. In 2007, Jill published a book about her life lessons called Simply Shine: Stories that Stirred the Fire. And in 2008, she began sharing her powerful message across the nation as an inspirational speaker.

Now you have your chance to hear Jill speak live at the Women’s Enrichment Expo at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls on August 26 from 4-9 p.m. The cost for the expo is $15 and tickets can be purchased at Thief River Falls Hugo’s, HD Floral, Time Well Spent and Crookston and East Grand Forks Hugo’s stores. Whether you’re looking for ways to unleash your passion, overcome obstacles, creat winning attitudes or build a muti-million dollar business, let Jill Blashack Strahan show you and your organization how to follow your dreams and reach new heights of success.

ARTS ON THE RED
FEATURING JOJO SEAMES
Fine Arts
eet JoJo Seames, a highlytalented artist whose work mostly features a variety of different versions of comic and cartoon characters we’ve come to know and love. Born and raised in Grand Forks, JoJo grew up with a fascination in art and although not coming from an artistic family, she's been drawng since she's first developed motor skills to hold a crayon. She graduated from Central High School in 2004, then went on to the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communications. JoJo is a highly talented comic artist. She discovered this love in high school when she combined her loves of writing and drawing. It was like lightning hitting her, as she described it. She started reading every book on comic books in gneral, seperating the good from the bad, and diving into comic theory,

history and the logistics of developing the pieces of art. Her writing inspirations "come from folklore from around the world, history and rock'n'roll." Her stories are one about change and learning to love. "I don't write stories about a good person fighting a bad person. My protagonists are generally their own worst enemy. They're ambiguous, or often downright immoral. Unsympathetic. But through the course of the story, they can change and be better,” said JoJo. “My characters have to start out pretty bad, or there's nowhere for the story to go; there's no contrast, no evolution. In order to tell a story about walking out of darkness and into the light, things have to be dark to begin with. I'm a Christian, so the ideas of repentance and humility are a big deal for me. Evil is a lack of love in the same way that cold is a lack of heat or darkness is a lack of light. So that darkness in my work is where I've left room in my characters for them to learn to love over the course of the story." According to JoJo, her visual aritstry in her comics get comparisons from works made in the 1960's and 70’s. Though she hasn't really read alot of those, she tries to read all acorss the spetcrum in comics, and the

strip "Calvin & Hobbes" happens to be where she began her studies into newspaper comic strips. The influences on JoJo's work is a large, tremendous list. The amount of influences on JoJo's work clearly shows her dedication and passion to the visual arts. The combination of her talents and philos-

ophy on life make for some incredible stories in her work. They have not gone unoticed, either. Shortly after graduating, her first original graphic novel, "Dis; Life is Hell volume 1" was published by Bohemian Trash Stu-

dios. She was recently hired as the pencil artist for the comic "Star Cross'd Destiny" and as the illustrator for "Monster Plus" as well as other freelance commissions. She also self-publishes her own work, such as "The Makeshift Man." She has a day job, which includes being a graphic and web designer for UND. Anyone can learn from JoJo's life in the sense that chasing dreams is a very real and livable concept one really puts his or her mind to it. Like alot of people, she's had the chance to follow the status-quo. Get a regular major, get a regular day-job, and be comfortable. "you know, becoming an artist is a calling. It's something you do because you know that you cannot be happy doing anything else," she said. “It's my hope the readers will find courage from this young, talented lady's life to find their calling in life, and ultimately find happiness.” Check out JoJo's material at: www.deadsquirrelcomics.com; www.JoJoSeames.com; www.radical-jojo.deviantART.com and some are now available at Whole Wheat Records and Comics in downtown Grand Forks.

Chester Fritz announces 2010-2011 schedule
Patrick Miller Contributing writer
From ballet to bluegrass, the 2010-2011 season at the University of North Dakota’s Chester Fritz Auditorium offers something for everyone. “It’s a really good, diverse lineup,” says Betty Allen, auditorium director. “We have our traditional shows and we’re bringing in a bluegrass music group, which is a little different for us.” The season opens Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. with the country music group the Oak Ridge Boys. Tickets for the concert go on sale Aug. 20 at 9 a.m. That’s followed on Oct. 9 with the popular Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” at 7:30 p.m., which Allen says is “hugely popular.” The Berenstain Bears family theater Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. is a show for the entire family. “There are lots of family friendly things to bring your kids to,” Allen notes.” We try to keep the prices affordable so the whole family can come.” On Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m., The Fritz hosts “The Highwaymen: A Musical Tribute featuring Waylon, Willie and Johnny.” Allen says Rusty Evans as the late Johnny Cash, Bob Gil as the late Waylon Jennings and Michael Moore as Willie Nelson are so convincing that it’s difficult to tell them apart from the real Waylon, Willie and Johnny. The musical trio resurrects and pays tribute to one of the greatest super groups in country music history. The UND Steel Drum Band will perform Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. Entertainment for the holidays features the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker on Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. and Lorie Line and her Fab Five “Making Spirits Bright” holiday extravaganza Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. Bearfoot, which plays The Fritz Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m., describes itself as a bluegrass, Americana and roots music band from Anchorage, Alaska. Originally formed by a group of music camp counselors, Bearfoot won the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Band Champions award – an honor it shares with the Dixie Chicks – just two years after it was formed. A local comedy favorite, the Church Basement Ladies return for their sequel performance, “A Second Helping,” on Feb. 12 with shows at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. “The Church Basement ladies are hilarious,” Allen says.”Their ScandinavianLutheran humor always goes over well in our region of the country.” The Broadway theater show “All Shook Up” will play March 1 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the family theater “Happily Ever After… A Cinderella Tale” March 12 at 2 p.m. The Irish rock band The Elders will perform March 21 at 7:30 p.m. The season ends with the Broadway theater musical “The Music Man” on April 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Sports
our months ago, After 5 did a story on a winter triathlon in Grand Forks. In that story, a spring adventure race and an even longer fall adventure race were also mentioned. After my meeting with Andy Magness, organizer of all three races, I decided the fall race would be something fun to do and would help get me back into shape. After four months of training, by training I mean eating a little healthier, one bowl of ice cream a day instead of two, and running or biking everyday, I lost 35 pounds and am still very nervous and not sure I’m remotely ready for a ten hour race which has been named the “Toughest race in North Dakota.” When I first decided to train for the Extreme North Dakota Adventure Race (END-AR), which consists of biking, trekking and canoeing, I called a couple of friends to join my team of three. One friend, Nathan, is already in shape. He used to run cross country for UND and ran the

END-AR: THE TOUGHEST RACE IN NORTH DAKOTA
half marathon in Fargo in May. My other friend, dropped out in July forcing me to find someone else on short notice. One day, while taking out the trash at home, I ran into my neighbor and good friend Matt. I told him about the race and how tough it was going to be. He was excited, but figured he’d better check it out before he says “yes”. A few days later, he was on board. Together we decided we would work out every night together, after the kids were in bed. The first day was biking, we both struggled to make 12 miles in under an hour. The second day was running. Matt made it 1.5 miles before stopping to walk. I had been running since April so I was in much better shape for that. However, my first week of running went much worse than Matt’s, I barely made it a mile before stopping completely. Our training has progressed and hopefully is still progressing as you read this. I will guarantee that I’m still just as nervous for this race as ever, despite my physical capabilities increasing. Why so nervous you may ask? Well, let me tell you a little more about END-AR. On September 4th, Nathan, Matt and I will set out on a daunting task of finding checkpoints on a map using only a compass for navigation. We will run through mud, canoe down the Red River, and bike through tall grass and probably more mud, and those will be the easy parts. Other aspects of the race, like ropes courses, swimming and packrafting, are kept a secret until the morning of the race. We are given ten hours to cover close to 60 miles through the toughest terrain this area has to offer. Our bodies will be tested like never before, our minds and will to go forward will also be tested. If we can’t find a checkpoint or get lost and our frustration and anger grows, our friendships will also be tested. I’ve never done anything that strenuous for more than a few hours in my life. I’ve never competed in a race other than a 5k run. Since high school, some six years ago for me, I’ve let me body relax more than it should, hence the 35 pound weight loss, but on September 4th, I will either come out victorious having never quit or be shown exactly at what point I can be broken. If you too, would like to compete against me and my team in the “Toughest Race in North Dakota” on September 4th or would like more information on how to take part, you can visit www.endracing.com for more information.
