Baking cake with her friends
Child: Wajiha
Teacher: Anar
Date: May/2014
After long rainy weeks, we finally
had a lovely day today. Lots of
children straight went to the sandpit
area enjoying the wet sand. I
observed Wajiha, Leena, Zara were
playing together in sandpit and they
were pretending to make a cake
using sand. Wajiha was telling recipe
to Zara, and offered a cup of sand
pretend as sugar to her for mixing in
the cake. She was telling her friends what ingredients needed to make cake. She also asked
other friends what else they think needs to add for
making yummy cake. I noticed that she was
carefully mixing and measuring the sand just like
the teachers did it for baking often at centre. After
she finished baking, she offered the cake to other
children and me to eat it. She played with her friend
very nicely that ask their friends opinions. They
were taking a turn of sandpit tools as well. Learning
how to negotiate turn taking is an important aspects
to building friendships and listening to others opinion.
What learning do I think was happening here?
Wajiha has an ability to connect her past experiences to knowledge of baking to the
pretended play. Wajiha is also developing strategies and skills for initiating and maintaining
friendships.
Possibilities and pathways
We will continue to work with you as you learn the skills to develop friendships and
encourage you to joint small group activity.
