Deja Reynolds Bay Area College Tour October 17, 2012 Animo Inglewood

Higher education has always been my greatest aspiration. Determined to overcome the minority curse, I made a promise to myself that no matter what sacrifices I had to make I was going to a university. Early in life, a lot of minorities make it a goal to attain a degree of higher learning; however, this goal proves to be challenging because most families can’t afford tuition (which discourages students). Pursuing a higher education, as a minority student, will jump start the quest of erasing any bad reputations that our community possesses. Thus, it’s extremely important for minorities to pursue higher education to prove to the “majority” that we’re capable of breaking down the barriers set for “our kind”. To name a few, the resources available to me are: office hours, SAT prep, the Black Leadership Group (BLG), and college counselors. Office hours at my school are beneficial for me because it provides opportunities for one-on-one time with my teachers to answer lingering questions. SAT prep is a class that’s taken by juniors during school hours that, as the name suggests, prepares us for the SAT. I’m a member of BLG which is preparing me for college by teaching me leadership qualities and how to be open-minded when it comes to others’ opinions. I take advantage of the time allowed with my college counselor because she is always there to review colleges I’m interested in and their requirements. She assures me that my grades are up to par, and also shows me websites for scholarships.
