Biopsy - Cell or Tissue Check
Biopsies are very common tests these days. Biopsy is a medical test which includes the removal of cells and tissues for the microscopic examination. The result of the biopsy confirms the presence or extent of the spread of disease. The tissues can also be analyzed chemically. When only a sample of the tissue is removed retaining the original cell structure, it is called “core” or “incisional” biopsy while the removal of whole lump of cells in the case of suspicion, is called “excisional” biopsy. Biopsies can be done on any body part and hence there are various kinds of biopsies like lung biopsy, breast biopsy, endometrial biopsy, liver biopsy, kidney biopsy, cervix biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, skin biopsy, thyroid biopsy, bone biopsy, uterine biopsy, bone marrow biopsies, uterus biopsy and many more. The common sites for biopsy are lung, liver, bone marrow and gastrointestinal tract. The biopsy done in Wilson’s disease is used to examine the quantitative copper level. Biopsy procedure can also be done in various ways like needle biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, core needle biopsy, fine needle aspiration biopsy or vacuum assisted biopsy, depending on factors like the body part from which the samples are to be collected, health condition, age and various other factors. Biopsy is a basic medical examination of cells and it can also be combined with various other examinations like colposcopy biopsy. 20% of the women who employ biopsy in USA, turn out to have cancer while in Sweden, 80% of the biopsied lesions turn out to be malignantly cancerous.
