Bryn Mawr Hospital Behavioral Health Unit Celebrates 25 Years
(Bryn Mawr, PA)— Earlier this month the Behavioral Health Unit at Bryn Mawr Hospital recognized its 25th anniversary with a celebration for employees. Its multidisciplinary treatment team cares for patients with psychiatric disorders, addictions or other problems. “We are proud to be a part of the discipline that has come so far in 25 years,” said Stephen M. Mechanick, M.D., Chair, Department of Psychiatry at Bryn Mawr Hospital. “Today, patients who suffer from major depression have a number of treatment options. In addition to traditional psychotherapy and medication, we now offer the NeuroStar® Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy system to these patients. We also have effective treatments for patients who have anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as other psychiatric disorders.” The Bryn Mawr Hospital unit is also a training ground for medical students and residents. Second year psychiatry residents from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and medical students from Thomas Jefferson University receive training on the unit. The nurses on the Behavioral Health Unit are all Magnet® nurses, which means they are recognized for nursing excellence. “Over the past 25 years our unit has gone through many advancements, all geared toward improving the care we provide,” said Lorraine Winsey, BSN, BC, MS, nurse manager. “Recognition of the link between addiction and mental illness led to the opening of the co-occurring disorders treatment program at Bryn Mawr Hospital,” she explained. “We also have a Psychiatric Hospitalist Program to give patients more consistent care and an affiliation with American Day Treatment Center and Center for Addictive Diseases, which enables us to provide seamless continuity of care for our patients.” About Bryn Mawr Hospital Bryn Mawr Hospital, a member of Main Line Health, is a 307-bed licensed non-profit acute-care teaching hospital dedicated to helping the community stay well ahead on the path to life-long health.
