BMW was established as a business entity following a restructuring of the #app Motorenwerke
aircraft manufacturing firm in 191+. /fter the end of World War " in 191(, BMW was forced to
cease aircraft$engine production by the terms of the :ersailles /rmistice ?reaty. ?he company
conseuently shifted to motorcycle production in 19&-, once the restrictions of the treaty started
to be lifted, followed by automobiles in 19&(@&9.
?he first car which BMW successfully produced and the car which launched BMW on the road
to automobile production was the <i.i, it was based on the /ustin + and licensed from the /ustin
Motor %ompany in Birmingham, 7ngland.
BMWAs first significant aircraft engine was the BMW """a inline$si. liuid$cooled engine of
191(, much preferred for its high$altitude performance. With German rearmament in the 19-'s,
the company again began producing aircraft engines for the =uftwaffe. /mong its successful

the pioneering BMW ''- a.ial$flow turboBet, which powered the tiny, 19))@19)*@era Bet$

By the year 19*9, the automoti!e di!ision of BMW was in financial difficulties and a
shareholders meeting was held to decide whether to go into liuidation or find a way of carrying
on. "t was decided to carry on and to try to cash in on the current economy car boom enBoyed so
successfully by some of GermanyAs e.$aircraft manufacturers such as Messerschmitt and
9einkel. BMW acuired the 9ans Glas company, based in <ingolfing, Germany, in 1966.
"n 199&, BMW acuired a large stake in %alifornia based industrial design studio <esignworks

BMW began production of motorcycle engines and then motorcycles after World War ". "ts
motorcycle brand is now known as BMW Motorrad. ?heir first successful motorcycle, after the
failed 9elios and 1link, was the ,#-&, in 19&-. ?his had a ,bo.er, twin engine, in which a
cylinder proBects into the air$flow from each side of the machine. /part from their single$cylinder
models 2basically to the same pattern3, all their motorcycles used this distincti!e layout until the
early 19('s. Many BMWs are still produced in this layout, which is designated the # Ceries.
"n 19(&, came the ; Ceries, shaft dri!e but water$cooled and with either three or four cylinders
mounted in a straight line from front to back. Chortly after, BMW also started making the chain$
dri!en 1 and G series with single and parallel twin #ota. engines.
"n the early 199's, BMW updated the airhead Bo.er engine which became known as the oilhead.
"n &''&, the oilhead engine had two spark plugs per cylinder. "n &'') it added a built$in balance
shaft, an increased capacity to 1,1+' cc and enhanced performance to 1'' hp 2+* kW3 for the
#1&''GC, compared to (* hp 26- kW3 of the pre!ious #11*'GC. More powerful !ariants of the
oilhead engines are a!ailable in the #11''C and #1&''C, producing 9( hp 2+- kW3 and 1&& hp
291 kW3, respecti!ely.
"n &''), BMW introduced the new ;1&''C Cports Bike which marked a departure for BMW. "t
had an engine producing 16+ hp 21&* kW3, deri!ed from the companyAs work with the Williams
11 team, and is lighter than pre!ious ; models. "nno!ations include electronically adBustable
front and rear suspension, and a 9ossack$type front fork that BMW calls <uole!er.
BMW introduced anti$lock brakes on production motorcycles starting in the late 19('s. ?he
generation of anti$lock brakes a!ailable on the &''6 and later BMW motorcycles pa!e the way
for the introduction of electronic stability control, or anti$skid technology later in the &''+ model
year.
BMW has been an inno!ator in motorcycle suspension design, taking up telescopic front
suspension long before most other manufacturers. ?hen they switched to an 7arles fork, front
suspension by swinging fork 219** to 19693. Most modern BMWs are truly rear swingarm,
single sided at the back 2compare with the regular swinging fork usually, and wrongly, called
swinging arm3. Come BMWs started using yet another trademark front suspension design, the
?elele!er, in the early 199's. =ike the 7arles fork, the ?elele!er significantly reduces di!e under
braking.

BMW !ehicles follow a certain nomenclatureK usually a - digit number is followed by 1 or &

represent the engine displacement in cubic centimeters di!ided by 1''. 9owe!er, more recent

When A=A supersedes the series number 2e.g. =6, =+, etc.3 it identifies the !ehicle as a special
lu.ury !ariant, ha!ing e.tended leather and special interior appointments. ?he =+ is based on the
7&- and 7-(, and the =6 is based on the 7&).
When AIA is capitalised and supersedes the series number 2e.g. I-, I*, etc.3 it identifies the

?he ALA identifies the !ehicle as a two$seat roadster 2e.g. L1, L-, L), etc.3. AMA !ariants of ALA
models ha!e the AMA as a suffi. or prefi., depending on country of sale 2e.g. AL) MA is AM

5re!ious I Q L !ehicles had AiA or AsiA following the engine displacement number 2denoted in

As<ri!eA or A.<ri!eA 2simply meaning rear or all$wheel dri!e, respecti!ely3 followed by two
numbers which !aguely represent the !ehicleAs engine 2e.g. L) s<ri!e-*i is a rear$wheel$dri!e

BMW last used the AsA for the 7-6 -&(is, which ceased production in 1999. 9owe!er, the AsA
nomenclature was brought back on the &'11 model year BMW --*is and BMW L) s<ri!e-*is.
?he --*is is a sport$tuned trim with more performance and an optional dual clutch transmission
that slots between the regular --*i and top$of$the$line M-.
?he AMA @ for Motorsport @ identifies the !ehicle as a high$performance model of a particular
