The world’s second largest nation is big….REALLY BIG. In fact it’s so large that many have a difficulty getting to grips with the scale of it.
For example Halifax, Nova Scotia is closer to London than to its west coast relation, Vancouver. It takes 5½ hours to fly from one side of the country to the other. Put another way, Canada is nearly 38 times larger than the UK but with only half the population. This amounts to only 3½ people per square km whereas that figure for the UK is 249… When you consider that a vast amount of the population live close to the American border it’s not surprising to learn that most of Canada is almost completely devoid of us two-legged mammals! Having travelled over the years to many parts of Canada I am always struck by the amazing diversity of its landscape, the wonderful range of activities you can do there and the genuine friendliness of its people. There is so much that defines Canada: the rugged coastlines of the Maritimes; the awe inspiring Rocky Mountains; Yukon’s magnificent Klondike; Manitoba’s polar bears; the excitement of major cities such as Toronto and Vancouver and the cultural diversity of its people – a list that could go on and on. This is a country that has everything you could imagine and a lot more besides. This brochure aims to provide a flavour of what Canada can offer you as a holiday destination - more detailed information is on our website. Booking independently – an informed choice
In this day and age, it may be quite tempting to try and book your holiday independently using the Internet rather than the services of a specialist tour operator. This is of course an option, but be aware of the possible pitfalls and the potential false economy in doing so. There are various factors to take into consideration, for example assurance of quality and standards, what happens if the airline changes or cancels your flights, or the hotel room you thought you had booked becomes ‘overbooked’? What financial or consumer protection do you have and what happens if something goes wrong on holiday? You may also find that by the time you have booked all your arrangements there is little or no cost saving and you could well end up paying a lot more. When to go
Canada can be enjoyed year-round – offering a different experience every season! Spring boasts lower prices and colourful blossoms, whilst long hot summer days are perfect for independent exploration. Wildlife lovers can enjoy bear-viewing and whale-watching throughout the summer and into early autumn. Spectacular fall foliage gives way to polar bear viewing in October, and the winter months provide a chance to try dog-sledding under the northern lights.

The beautiful harbour city of Vancouver, is the gateway to BC, is a relaxed cosmopolitan city boasting historic districts, bustling markets, waterfront dining and wilderness parks. Neighbouring British Columbia, Alberta’s western boundary runs through the spectacular Rocky Mountains. Consequently this diverse province boasts some of the most stunning alpine landscapes in the country, but it also offers sweeping prairies, rolling farmland, forests and lakes.

Without a doubt one of Alberta’s main attractions is the aweinspiring Banff National Park, which is the best known of the Rockies’ national parks. The magnificent scenery comprising mountain peaks, forests, glacial lakes and powerful rivers covers an area of some 6,641 sq km (2,564 sq miles). The Banff township grew up around the hot springs that were discovered here in the 1880’s and provides an excellent base from which to explore the park’s many attractions. Probably the most notable of these is Lake

Louise. The striking turquoise waters backed by rising snow capped peaks provide an iconic image of the region. Between Lake Louise and Jasper the famous Icefields Parkway is a 142-mile spectacular drive through the outstanding beauty and geological features of the Canadian Rockies. The capital of Alberta is Edmonton, situated on the banks of the Saskatchewan River and home to the largest mall and entertainment centre in North America. More than just a shopping centre, West Edmonton

Mall also has a giant water park, a man-made lake, a skating rink, two mini-golf courses, 21 movie theatres, a Vegas-style casino and an amusement park! Having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988, Calgary is a popular ski area during the winter season and becomes a worldclass mountain biking venue in the summer. Calgary is perhaps best known for its Stampede – a 10-day festival held in July each year celebrating the rich cowboy heritage of the province.

Calgary Stampede
Experience the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’, as Calgary celebrates its cowboy heritage with a 10-day event each July. Day 1 arrive Calgary Spend your day of arrival at leisure soaking up the Stampede atmosphere. Days 2-3 Calgary Stampede Dig out your boots, don your hat and make your own way to the Stampede Park. Yukon
The Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut represent Canada’s wild north. Stretching into the Arctic Circle, here you will find rugged landscapes and a colourful history of First Nations, traders and gold prospectors. The city of Whitehorse is the main gateway to the Yukon and makes for a great base from which to explore the territory, whilst further north quirky Dawson City is forever synonymous with the Klondike Gold Rush. Dawson City’s unique architecture helps to evoke a sense of a bygone era, whilst both cities retain a close-community feel and are just minutes from the surrounding wilderness. Within easy reach are national parks, mountains, lakes and rivers; iconic landmarks such as the Dempster Highway, Tombstone Territorial Park and the endless glaciers of Kluane National Park evoke images of one of the world’s last unspoiled wilderness regions. In the winter you can try your hand at dog-sledding or snowmobiling and marvel at majestic displays of the northern lights overhead.

Manitoba
Located in central Canada, along with Saskatchewan, Manitoba’s landscapes are diverse. From the prairie grasslands in the south and west to the east’s countless lakes and forests, with a wild north stretching into sub-Arctic tundra.

The gateway to Manitoba is the city of Winnipeg, originally an important trading post for First Nation people dating back thousands of years. From Winnipeg it is possible to travel to excellent fishing and birdwatching areas throughout the province. But undoubtedly the biggest draw to Manitoba is the tiny frontier town of Churchill, perched on the edge of Hudson Bay. In the summer the bay attracts the unusual white beluga whales in their thousands, whilst every October the region is transformed into the polar bear capital of the world. The polar bears congregate on the tundra as they wait for the ice in the bay to freeze over, offering a rare chance to view the world’s largest land predators in their natural habitat.

Newfoundland and Labrador boasts a colourful history incorporating marauding Vikings, indigenous Beothuck Indians and Basque whalers. Halifax is the largest city in the Maritimes, providing a good contrast to the nearby fishing villages of Peggy’s Cove and Lunenburg, whilst to the east the Cabot Trail is justifiably rated as one of Canada’s most scenic drives. Just across the Bay of Fundy, famed for having the highest

tides in the world, lies the province of New Brunswick. Around 85% of New Brunswick is covered in forest – pine, maple and birch – making for some fantastic fall colours. Canada’s smallest province, Prince Edward Island, is renowned for its lush landscapes - red sand beaches, rolling farmland and azure seas. Boasting a lengthy Atlantic coastline, the region as a whole is renowned for whale-watching, with large pods of humpback, minke, sperm and blue whales frequenting these waters each summer. Bird life is also in abundance, including puffins, petrels and razorbills, as well as hawks and ospreys.

Day 1 Vancouver-Victoria Collect your rental car and take the scenic ferry to Vancouver Island. Visit the Butchart Gardens before continuing into the charming harbour city of Victoria. Day 2 Victoria-Quadra Island Make your way north to Campbell River and board the ferry to Quadra Island for a 2-night stay. The Itinerary
Day 1 Campbell River Head to Campbell River on Vancouver Island’s east coast. The township of Campbell River lies on the shore of Discovery Passage and boasts views out past Quadra Island towards the rugged Coast Mountain range of mainland BC. Day 2 Campbell River-Knight Inlet This morning you will be transferred to the Campbell River Float Plane dock for your scenic flight over to Knight Inlet Lodge. You will be given a welcome orientation session providing details of the wildlife viewing that lies ahead. Later you will join an excursion to see the grizzly bears – this may be by boat or to specially designed viewing platforms, depending on the season and the location of the bears. Grizzly bears come out of hibernation in spring and can be seen from the safety of a boat as they feed on the banks of Glendale Cove in Knight Inlet. Their diet here consists mainly of sedge grasses, mussels and barnacles. Later in the season, during the autumn, you can enjoy the incredible spectacle of the bears feeding on salmon as they return to the Glendale River for spawning. A specially constructed platform allows for the best possible viewing of this event, one of nature’s truly great wildlife sights. During your stay at Knight Inlet Lodge there may also be time for kayaking, guided hiking, a scenic boat trip and the chance to spot bald eagles and other bird life. Whilst a 1-night stay will be rewarding, this will only allow time for a short boat cruise in addition to the bear watching excursion. We strongly recommend spending 2 or 3 nights at the lodge in order to immerse yourself in this great wilderness and maximise your wildlife-spotting opportunities. Day 3: Knight Inlet-Campbell River Return to Campbell River by float plane, to continue your Canadian adventure.

Day 1 Vancouver Arrive and join your fellow travellers for a Welcome Reception this evening. Day 2 Vancouver Enjoy a sightseeing tour, taking in the Waterfront, historic Gastown and Stanley Park. The Itinerary
Day 1 Whitehorse Arrive and transfer to your centrally-located hotel. Day 2 Whitehorse, Yukon Wildlife Preserve & Takhini Hotsprings Enjoy a sightseeing tour of Whitehorse this morning, including attractions such as the historic SS Klondike and a “Skyscraper” constructed of logs. Later continue to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve to see elk, moose, cariboo, mountain goats and porcupines. Nearby are the Takhini Hotsprings, where you will have time to indulge yourself in the natural hot waters against a breathtaking mountain backdrop. Back in Whitehorse enjoy this spectacular winter scenery from above, as you enjoy a 20-minute sightseeing flight. Day 3 Snowmobiling Travel into the mountains surrounding Whitehorse, where you will be given a detailed safety briefing before embarking on your snowmobile adventure. Pass through the memorable winter scenery of the Yukon and soak up the view of snow covered mountains and lakes. After a relaxed dinner in Whitehorse you will set out this evening to Fish Lake, in search of the northern lights – although this can never be guaranteed, your chances are good as this area is one of the best in Canada to view the Mother Nature’s surreal natural phenomenon. Day 4 Dogsledding Today you will learn the old tradition of mushing (dog-sledding). After a detailed safety briefing you will explore the frozen bends of the Yukon River all the way to Miles Canyon, the dogsleds providing the ideal way to experience this icy wilderness. Later enjoy a relaxing horse-sled ride, and if you are still looking for more adventure there’s an opportunity to try out snowshoeing. The perfect end to an adventurous day? – a beer from the local brewery! Day 5 Whitehorse Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

The Itinerary
Day 1 Vancouver-Jasper (overnight onboard VIA Rail’s ‘Canadian’) This evening check-in at the Pacific Central Station and board VIA Rail’s ‘Canadian’ for your train journey to the majestic Canadian Rockies. The original stainless steel ‘streamliner’ railcars are now fully refurbished with air conditioning, a café car, lounge car, and access for all on board to the viewing dome car. By day, sit back in comfortable armchairs; at night attendants will transform your quarters into cozy bunks or a bedroom. Day 2 Jasper By the time you awake this morning the train will have just departed Kamloops to begin a day of travelling towards the Canadian Rockies and Jasper. Enjoy breakfast while surrounded by dramatic scenery as you follow the banks of the North Thompson River through the Monashee and Cariboo Mountains. Around lunch time the ‘Canadian’ begins its passage into the Canadian Rockies with views of snow-capped peaks, Pyramid Falls and the expansive glaciers of the Albreda Icefields. Pass by Mount Robson, which at 3954 metres is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Arrive in Jasper and transfer to your hotel. Day 3 Jasper This evening experience the wonders of the Maligne Canyon from the ground up! The canyon has withstood 10,000 years of erosion and has created a 165 foot gorge. Your guide will lead you along the frozen canyon floor and its ice-clad limestone walls. Sturdy winter boots will keep you warm and secure as you explore this wonderland of rock and ice. Day 4 Jasper-Lake Louise Travel southward by scheduled coach along the Icefield Parkway to Lake Louise. This spectacular drive through glacier country will be highlighted by massive snow-covered mountains, frozen waterfalls and deep valleys. Included this evening is a memorable Sleigh Ride along the lakeside. Day 5 Lake Louise-Banff Depart mid-morning for the short drive to Banff via the scenic Bow Valley. Day 6 Banff Today you will join a snowshoe excursion around Banff’s ‘Paint Pots,’ natural coloured pools. The easy trail through the Vermilion River Valley to the Paint Pots offers a great introduction to snowshoeing. Along the way hear stories of Banff’s indigenous people, explorers and fur traders who lived in and travelled through the Rockies. This trip is on mostly flat terrain and you will have a chance to search for snowshoe hare, moose and wolf tracks while exploring. Finally, near the Paint Pots you’ll be rewarded with a unique Canadian treat - hot maple taffy! Day 7 Banff-Calgary This morning is free to explore Banff before joining your scheduled coach to Calgary.
