Objective of PRS: To Facilitate customers convenience for buying railway tickets Improve efficiency by reducing burden on staff at the ticket counters Customer focused IT applications used: 1. Passenger reservation system (PRS) 2. Unreserved ticketing system (UTS) 3. National Train enquiry system (NTES) 4. Freight operating information system (FOIS) 5. Journey Planning Transaction Processing System: • Indian Railways has a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) running on a dedicated network of 5 mainframe computers. • It helps to reserve seats, it can be queried for seat availability, days of running, fares, and other related information. • It can be accessed over the web, or the passengers can approach the enquiry counters. • All information is linked to the PRS on the web as well as the enquiry counters (back end) • It provides PNR query through the IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) , the Internet and in some cases PDAs or touch screens. • SMS services are also offered. • Unreserved tickets are sold through manual counters or self printing ticketing machines. • The unreserved ticketing system enables the tickets to be procured from any terminal in a region. IRCTC is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways to which the Web based ticketing has been outsourced. • www.irctc.co.in links to the Indian Railways PRS at the backend for transactions • Payment can be made by credit card, validated by ICICI bank's payment gateway.


Train Running and Arrival Information • To know the running position and arrival time of the train. • Data is fed at different stations connected to the database through an IVRS • NTES facilitates the data collection and retrieval through the IVRS and allows the costumers to track the train movement position on the internet as well Strategic Significance • Better customer relationship and to support an organizational structure designed to carry out strategies. • Has simplified the transportation of people and has developed complex web of information systems to support the simplified processes.
