Cell Phones: Helpful or Hurtful? By Sarah Nyirjesy ³Hello Moto´ is becoming a sound heard daily by people all around the world. Cell phones are certainly changing our lives, but the question is whether the change is for the better or the worse. Recently, I was out to dinner celebrating my friend¶s birthday with four other girls. We all sat down and began talking, but the conversations did not involve everyone sitting at the table. That was because throughout the entire hour and a half dinner, at least one of us had our cell phone out. The dinner was constantly interrupted by text messaging and even phone calls. Eventually, I realized how ridiculous the situation was. Though we had planned on spending time together as friends having fun, we couldn¶t really be there mentally because we had so many different side conversations going on with people who weren¶t even there! So are cell phones good or bad for society? Just about everybody has one, and most people depend on them heavily, carrying them with them at all times. Home phones have gone out of use and style since it is so much more convenient to find the number in one¶s address book and hit one button in order to call a person. Students especially depend on their cell phones for rides home and weekend plans. Sure, cell phones are good in their own way. They add a level of expediency that was never available before. Instead of having to wait in line for a payphone, people just use their cells. Also, questions can be answered within seconds by texting. People can change plans much more easily because of cell phones, and they can even order dinner as they.re are driving -which is another whole debate-to the takeout restaurant. However, it is questionable whether the bad outweighs the good. Students text in class and in the hallways and sometimes even make phone calls, which takes away from not only their learning experience, but also that of those around them. As previously stated, cell phones tend to be a distraction when out with friends, taking away from person-to-person bonding time. I for one find it difficult to get my homework done because I am constantly interrupted by texts or phone calls that are much more interesting. Even if cell phones are becoming a detriment to friendships and schoolwork, society now depends very heavily upon them. Whether we like it or not, our reliance on them is ever-growing, which leaves it up to the owners to control their cell phones, or have them control us. Unfortunately, many teens cannot resist the temptations.
