Iodine Lab Purpose: Trying to synthesize crystalized iodine from “household” materials. (I.e. common items) Materials:         100 ml. beaker Potassium Iodide Hydrochloric Acid 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution Water Filter paper Graduated cylinder Funnel

Procedure: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Data: Dissolve 5 g. of Potassium Iodide into 10 ml of water in the beaker Add 5 ml. of HCL to Potassium Iodide solution Add 15 ml. of Hydrogen Peroxide to solution Filter solution through filter paper. Repeat using 10g. of Potassium Iodide instead of 5 g.

Materials KI HCI (concentrated) H2O2 (3% solution)
Calculations: Trial 1 KI HCl H2O2 Total = $ 0.78 I2 Results:

trial 1 5 g. 5 ml. 15 ml.

trial 2 10 g. 5 ml. 15 ml. 0 g.

I2 Crystals Produced .45 g.

Trial 2 KI HCl H2O2 Total = $ 1.50 I2 $ 0.0

The first trial produced more I2 than the second trial considering the second trail produced none. The first trial is also more cost effective considering the cost nearly doubled in the second to produce no I2.
