Labor Day ‘Drive Sober’
campaign concludes
Law enforcement officers from
Cherry Hill concluded participa-
tion in the Labor Day “Drive
Sober or Get Pulled Over” cam-
paign.
From Aug. 16-Sept. 2, officers
conducted roving patrols looking
for motorists who may be driving
while intoxicated.
This effort resulted in four DWI
arrests, one arrest for an out-
standing criminal warrant and
the issuance of 66 motor vehicle
summonses.
“Drive Sober or Get Pulled
Over” is a national campaign de-
signed to raise awareness about
the dangers of drinking and driv-
ing through high-visibility en-
forcement and public education
during some of the busiest travel
times of the year, including the
Labor Day holiday period.
Law enforcement agencies par-
ticipating in the Drive Sober or
Get Pulled Over campaign offer
the following advice throughout
anytime of the year:
• If you plan to drink, designate
a driver, someone who will not
drink alcohol, before going out.
• Take mass transit, a taxi or
ask a sober friend to drive you
home.
• Make arrangements to spend
the night where the activity is
being held
• Report impaired drivers to
law enforcement. In New Jersey,
drivers may dial #77 to report a
drunk or aggressive driver.
• Always buckle up, every ride,
regardless of your seating posi-
tion in the vehicle. It’s your best
defense against an impaired driv-
er.
• If you’re intoxicated and
traveling on foot, the safest way to
get home is to take a cab or have a
sober friend or family member
drive you to your doorstep.

Fair Share Housing Center is appealing
to build affordable housing on the Wood-
crest Country Club property, which First
Montgomery Group, a Marlton-based real
estate consortium, purchased in May.
“Over my dead body will this precious
property be destroyed in favor of high-den-
sity development,” said Jeffrey Nash, Cam-
den County freeholder.
The housing center is attempting to
overturn the state Department of Environ-
mental Protection’s decision to exclude the
country club from the township’s sewer
plan, using a 1993 injunction as legal lever-
age.
According to Nash, the county and Cher-
ry Hill Township worked together to pur-
chase the property, and despite not holding
the winning bid, the two are working to
maintain the property as a golf course or
open space.
According to court documents, Cherry
Hill is responsible for fulfilling its “afford-
able housing obligation in light of the
scarcity of land in the township.”
The document further states that if nu-
merous properties became available until
1999, including Woodcrest Country Club,
the township must accommodate an afford-
able housing development.
According to Fair Share Housing Center
lawyer Kevin Walsh, if the affordable hous-
ing obligation isn’t met, it carries over
until development has occurred.
“Fair Share Housing is chomping at the
bit to build low-income housing,” Nash
said. “I’m not against [affordable housing].
What I’m against is tearing up a piece of
historical property – it’s an outrage.”
Fair Share Housing has explored other
locations in the township to develop, but no
other properties are available, Walsh said.
According to Walsh, the housing “is for
people who are almost always fully em-
ployed but can’t afford the state’s expensive
living cost.”
“Twenty-five percent of New Jersey’s
population qualifies for this type of hous-
ing,” Walsh said. “We want to give people
the opportunity to live in Cherry Hill that
may not otherwise be able to afford it.”
The housing center is seeking to appeal

welve years have passed since
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washing-
ton, D.C.
That’s hard to believe.
It’s hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that this country changed
forever.
It’s hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
It’s hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 12 years –
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a person’s
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 12 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didn’t.
Twelve years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women –
and their families – who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us, are
setting up 9/11 memorials, obtaining
steel from the World Trade Center to
display and hosting 9/11 remem-
brances.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 12 years ago. We should always
respectfully pause and respect those
who were taken from us and those
who fight for our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who weren’t alive 12 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.
We will never forget
Twelve years later, we continue to remember those lives lost on 9/11

Countywide flu shot program
kicks off on Sept. 26
The change of
seasons leaves
many people feel-
ing under the
weather. But you
can avoid getting
sick by getting a
flu shot. The Cam-
den County De-
partment of
Health and Human Services
recommends that everyone get
vaccinated this flu season, es-
pecially children and seniors
who are most vulnerable.
The Freeholder Board has
scheduled 16 site locations for
the 2013 Seasonal Influenza Im-
munization Program. As is the
tradition, the program begins
at the annual Senior Health
Fair, which this year takes
place on Thursday, Sept. 26, in
Cooper River Park, starting at
10:00 a.m. and continuing
through 2:00 p.m.
The launch of the flu shot
program is traditionally coor-
dinated with the senior health
fair because men and women
age 65 and older are among the
“high priority” groups for an-
nual shots. As always, we ask
that seniors receiving
Medicare to bring their
Medicare ID cards with them.
In order to keep your family
healthy this flu season, we
want to make this beneficial
service easy to access for you
and your family. That is why
we host immunization sites at
convenient locations across
Camden County.
The flu cannot only create
challenges at home, but it can
have a negative effect on the
workplace crippling busi-
nesses and suffocating produc-
tion. The flu can
spread quickly
through any of-
fice and infect
several employ-
ees through the
simple act of
coughing. If you
are a business
owner, you should
also encourage your employees
to get vaccinated. It literally
“pays” to get a flu shot.
Pregnant women and chron-
ically ill people are other high
priority groups. Flu shots are
also recommended for people
with weakened immune or car-
diovascular systems, or with
chronic metabolic diseases,
renal dysfunction or blood dis-
orders. Youngsters aged 9 and
older must be accompanied by
an adult; those under the age
of nine are not included in the
program.
Children under 9 need two
shots, a month apart, and
should be seen by a pediatri-
cian. For uninsured children,
call CamCare at (856) 541-9811
or the Bellmawr Health Center
at (856) 931-2700.
For a complete list of flu shot
locations, visit www.camden-
county.com. For other informa-
tion, contact the county
Department of Health and
Human Services at (800) 999-
9045.

*SUBJECT TO APPROVAL
Fair Share Housing prepared
to sue over obligation
to the DEP to cancel a “long-estab-
lished responsibility so they can
develop on the property.” The
county has the final say in the de-
cision on the sewage, Nash said.
“The owners should have
known the county has to approve
sewer connections and the county
has no intention to do so,” Nash
said. “We find it to be very unfor-
tunate. I think it’s a fruitless ef-
fort on their part. It’s a frivolous
effort.”
Walsh says that both the town-
ship and county were aware of
the obligation and should not be
surprised an appeal has been
filed in favor of housing develop-
ment.
Fair Share Housing is pre-
pared to sue First Montgomery
Group if it does not comply with
the obligation, according to
Walsh.
“We made it abundantly clear
to the owners if they don’t use the
property for housing we’d sue
them,” Walsh said.
First Montgomery Group could
not be reached for comment.
According to Nash, the county
has little-to-no space left for
sewage. Additionally, the area is
too congested for more traffic.
The township and county are pre-
pared to deny any rezoning ap-
peal the housing organization
may file.
“They’re presuming it will be
rezoned by the township just be-
cause the property falls in the
hands of a residential developer,”
Nash said. “It would be a frivo-
lous lawsuit [against First Mont-
gomery Group] because it isn’t
available for residential construc-
tion, period. Unless there is a zon-
ing change, any developer cannot
build on that property, and I will
fight that to the death.”
In May, First Montgomery
Group purchased the parcel of
land, with a winning bid that was
almost $4 million higher than the
appraised value of the property,
according to a release from Cam-
den County.
According to a county release
at the time of the bid, the free-
holder board will continue to
work to save the integrity of the
property and preserve the parcel
in the same way it has existed

Mayor doesn’t want
to see site developed
over the last 100 years.
“We were very disappointed
[we didn’t get the property], but
FMG paid twice the value,” Nash
said. “We made it clear we wanted
it reserved as a golf course or
open space. We’re not going to
permit them to develop it into a
high-density project.”
According to the county re-
lease, Mayor Chuck Cahn was de-
finitive in his support for the zon-
ing of the property and the
preservation of the land.
“Together with the county, we
put our best foot forward in try-
ing to acquire the property. I am
disheartened by the outcome, but
our position has not changed:
Council and I do not want to see
this site developed, and we will
not support any change in zon-
ing,” Cahn said.
“Cherry Hill has generally
done a bad job with complying
with the state’s housing laws.
They’ve only done what a court
has required them to do,” Walsh
said.
According to a county release,
Woodcrest Country Club is a par-
71 layout in the southwest corner
of Cherry Hill adjacent to two
heavily traveled county road-
ways, between Route 561 and Eve-
sham Road. The facility lies geo-
graphically in the center of Cam-
den County. The golf club dates
back to 1929, when Camden City’s
Jewish population was barred at
other golf courses and started
their own.
“I have been passionate about
many projects, but this is one of
the most important, and we’re not
going to give up this fight,” Nash
said. “It’s so meaningful to every
resident in that area. It would be a
community tragedy to be in favor
of more housing.”

Four area high school juniors took home top honors during Rutgers–Camden’s summer program, “BizEd:
Building the Best ‘You’ for Business.” The intensive week-long camp at the Rutgers School of
Business–Camden prepares students to become future business leaders and was held July 23-31. The
students were awarded free iPad Mini tablets for their accomplishments during the program, which intro-
duced them to the rigors of collegiate business education. The winners were: Samuel Hacke (Mont-
gomery High School/Belle Mead); Michael Kueny (Cherry Hill High School East/Cherry Hill); Veronica
Tortella (Gloucester County Institute of Technology/Paulsboro); and Evan White (Eastern Regional High
School/Voorhees). The 18 teens from Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties were introduced to
theory and practice of accounting, finance, management, marketing and technology during the BizEd
camp. They worked closely with Rutgers–Camden faculty to examine business disciplines and learn the
role technology plays in the business world. The students were awarded points for activities completed
throughout the program. Each student received certification of his or her participation in the program.
The BizEd camp for juniors followed a similar program for high school seniors held July 9 to 18.

Davis Transportation Services,
a driver-staffing firm servicing
the transportation and logistics
industry, has moved two of its
long-term employees into man-
agement roles.
Jesse Coleman and Rafael
Padilla started at DTS as re-
cruiters, responsible for placing
commercial licensed drivers with
classifications A and B and vary-
ing endorsements. Both began in
2007.
Coleman came to the company
with prior experience in the
transportation industry while
Padilla joined after serving in the
Army for 22 years.
Coleman heads the Cherry Hill
branch of DTS as the regional op-
erations manager. He is responsi-
ble for driving profitability in the
region, as well as maintaining in-
ternal oversight for the
day-to-day operations of the busi-
ness.
“Stepping into my new role of
regional operations manager has
been an honor, and I’m very excit-
ed for what our business has in
store going forward” Coleman
said. “Being a major part of our
internal staff ’s development
while maintaining my connec-
tion with our drivers and client
companies is extremely impor-
tant to me.”
Padilla has recently been
named compliance and safety
manager for Davis Transporta-
tion Services.
He will use his years of experi-
ence to train all DTS personnel on
Department of Transportation
Compliance, keep the company
up-to-date on current DOT regula-
tions and coming changes, ensure
that drivers are qualified to work
in accordance with DOT policies
and work closely with our re-
cruiters and clients. “Working
with each and every member of
the DTS team to make sure we
meet and exceed our clients’ ex-
pectations the first time around is
one of the things I enjoy most
about my new position,” Padilla
said. “I also enjoy the training as-
pect. Keeping my team informed
and helping to train new mem-
bers to understand the ins and
outs of our industry is truly an
honor.”
“Promoting Rafael and Jesse
was the next logical step in the
plan for the future of DTS in the
Mid-Atlantic region,” said Jim
Davis, vice president. “Their hard
work and dedication to our com-
pany has been crucial in getting
us to where we are today, and they
are integral pieces of our growth
moving forward. We anticipate
hiring more than a dozen more
employees in the next 12 months,
allowing us to fill more than 300
new positions for our client com-
panies.”
