KBSM Childcare and Early Childhood Education

INTRODUCTION Childcare and Early Childhood Education is one of the vocational elective subjects for the upper secondary schools in the Integrated Curriculum for Secondary School (KBSM). Pupils learning this subject will be able to master skills in children care, guidance, and education service. The subject’s legislation is the effort of the Education Ministry to improve practical skill and inculcating entrepreneurship enthusiasm among the pupils, particularly in the child-care service field, as well as contribute towards the development of intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically virtuous generation. This subject incorporates three main aspects which include children care, implementation and management of learning activities, and entrepreneurship. Pupils plan and carry out challenging and fun activities for the children in order to improve the children’s potential and at the same time practicing compassion and love while caring and educating them. The pupils are also exposed to the methods of preparing, cooking and serving foods to the children. The pupils’ creativity is revealed while preparing teaching aids which also includes the use of information technology. The pupils will be carrying out practical work on child-care service and conducting various types of teaching and learning activities. In doing so, health care, treatment and safety measures will be given emphasis.

Childcare and Early Childhood Education subject is intended to produce pupils who are skilled, educated and disciplined as prerequisites of their involvement in careers related to the field of childcare and early childhood education. With the acquired skills and experiences, the pupils will be able to establish their own business or work in children care and service institutions such as kindergarten and children’s day-care centre.

AIM The Childcare and Early Childhood Education subject aims to produce pupils who are skilled in the management of children care services and putting into practice exceptional and reliable work culture as well as able to establish and conduct their own business or capable of becoming contributors of skilled manpower particularly in the field of child-care services.

OBJECTIVE The Childcare and Early Childhood Education Curriculum enables the pupils to:

CONTENT ORGANISATION The Childcare and Early Childhood Education subject is composed in three areas of study. Each area is divided into study unit comprising of several topics. The descriptions and the list of units in the three areas of study are as follows:

Childhood Education Service The pupils are introduced to childcare service duties with emphasis on systematic management and safety regulations practice. They will be able to master the skill in the preparation of nutritious food and train the children to practice table manners.

Skills in Carrying Out Activities The pupils master the skills of planning and carrying out various challenging and fun activities in order to improve the children’s language, socioemotions, physical, cognitive, aesthetics and creativity. They also practice close relationship with the children, parents and local community.

The pupils are also exposed to career opportunity in the childcare and early childhood education field. The pupils’ confidence and readiness in providing services in this field is enhanced through career project. Simultaneously, the pupils’ creativity is also improved.

3. Entrepreneurship and Career Project In this area of study, the pupils are exposed to effective communication methods and decision making skills. They will learn techniques of simple business plan preparation, identify organizations that aid entrepreneurs and also learn marketing techniques.
