Preface

This work is limited only to what you can do, not what you should do! We are not getting paid to do this. This is not our responsibility. This work is not made to etch our names as heroes. That is why no credits have been taken. We are just the Ed team and we are proud to keep it that way.

Hope you get something out of it! 3

Chill Pill – Kya Avishkar Hain

The reason for which you came here is right in front of you –staring you in the face. Staring into ur eyes like inevitable death. You don’t know what to do. You don’t know where to start from. Somehow, somewhere in your heart you feared this day you knew this day was coming, approaching at breakneck speed, yet you went on getting sucked into the normal routine watching too much tv, catching on good times, chatting with pals, lazing around girl’s hostel, riding your bike, chatting on your cell, and other such honorable living pastimes. Now relax, this is what all of us did! You are not alone. REPEAT – THIS IS WHAT WE DID, CHILL! The following pages carry a crash course guide for you to sail through the selection process put up by sadistic recruiters. It contains questions, how to do this and that, selection patterns and of course bloated words of all those lucky ones who made the cut. Ya lucky ones! That’s what we would like to honestly call ourselves, because though at the time of typing this out 44 of our batch were already placed (Praise be to the Devil) we still believe that these 44 were in no way more smarter than the 31 left behind. We take it as pure luck and ya a bit of smart preparation! What is smart preparartion? Is it done by smart people? Well yes and no. I had a friend who came in for all his 3 rd sem exams high. He had love problems all throughout 3 rd sem exams, so he hit the bottle. He swam like a fish, when we all pored over handouts. Not that he did not study. He did! But only what he could! Only what he thought would work! He used to call up everybody ask what they were studying and then study! When he used to get down to writing, he used to write completely sanely, no hangovers of the fights over the phone last night, no trace of the tears he had cried, no throbbing headaches from the whisky he had last night, he was there to answer his paper and that’s what he did. That performance was his best performance till date. He moved over from his territory of 50-60% to enter the respected 75%+ league. This is no exception. He did it again in the midsems of the 4 th sem. If you doubt the authenticity of the story please call 09880100817 and ask him. The moral of the story is not that you should hit the bottle! (I wish I could have said that) it is that you don’t need to be super duper intell. You don’t have to read 24X7. You don’t have to do this and that and that and also that. It means that you can throw away this document whenever you feel like. Its you who matter. If you think you know it. You know it. You don’t need words of advice from people who themselves luckily made it. Someday when you get over the process, you will understand why I wrote this like this. Till then you can frown and ignore this page. But if you really wanna discover yourself. Mark my words – you got nothing to learn from us. Except this CHILL! This document as you would notice is markedly different from the last face to face, given to us by our seniors. That --- You can find it in the files section of your yahoo groups. It 4

is a more detailed study study kinda document. It tells you too many things to do and too many things to read and learn. With all due respect to their wonderful groundbreaking effort, somehow I found it way too much. What it gave was a far too large list of to dos and not to dos, to read and not to read. Such large mass intimidates, you try to do all what it preaches and wonder about the supermen and women who did it. Sometimes you do it all and wonder why you are still not placed? It only brings about a feeling of self pity and deep pain. What we wanna make you is CHILL. Don’t wanna KILL. All the things the earlier document prescribed were way too much to follow-- we did not. At least I did not, and even the people who religiously did so cant be found in the persons who got their jobs in one shot one kill, so the Ed team, decided to keep this as they wanted it to be --- BARE MINIMUM … something that we really did.. Something you can easily do. Something which you will do for sure. We did the bare minimum but we believed in ourselves. You can look thru the earlier detailed, comprehensive one and then you could look at this. But for anybody who likes to face reality, who knows that whatever ppl tell him, he can’t work that hard, for ppl who want a way out instead of slogging like a mule, who just want a direction to be pointed out not a lift, for anyone who is a realist and not an idealistic grasshopper, I hope you get what you want in the pages to come. The tone of this document is going to be completely colloquial as a b school hand me down should be. The document would be littered with personal comments of the Ed team. If you don’t like them, ignore them. You cant strike them off. Its for you ok but its our work. So bear with it! Instead fall in love with it! We would be full of mistakes and we are proud of them. We have not tried to keep checks on any typos. There are no attempts to ensure accuracy. Infact no revisions have been made.. There are many gross oversights on the part of the Ed team. Like the credits for the TCS people do not appear in the Killer Section. No personal grudges, the questions used have been the first draft thus names were missing. Also many experiences are missing, not my mistake (that’s my fav line) some had their heads too high in the clouds to come down and type out something for you juniors. Looks like you guys are not the only mean ones who refuse seniors a formal farewell. Mean people are everywhere. The guy typing this out is one! If you have any negative comments to make, we are not ready to take them. Please do keep them to yourselves and your useless unemployed gossip circles. By the time you read this I already am on a fat paying job unfazed by whatever a bunch of kids have to crib about. I am fed up of hearing negative comments. Enough of typing the introduction, so ladies and gentlemen without further a do, I present to you, the Chill Pill!

Prevention is better than cure
What to prepare with respect to the CV? 1. Make a sexy CV, nothing short of sexy will do. Please ensure that the format is the one being circulated in the class. The entire class should have one format, without that the recruiter gets mightily pissed off. Any fancy ideas about making a unique cv shuck it up your hose pipe. If your data sucks, so will your CV, a fat lady is a fat lady whether she wears a jeans or a ghagra-choli. 2. You should be through with each and every word of the CV. Don’t hide to put in your marks. Yes, I repeat put them there to avoid embarrassments of first being short listed and then being thrown out. 3. Your career objective must be good yet sensible don’t overjargonise please. 4. Prepare what you will tell about yourself that is not given in the CV. 5. Read, re read, edit and re edit your CV till you get placed. How to prepare for Placements? • If you are not studying in July, you are Cool! If you are not studying in August, you are Smart, you don’t need to mug. If you are not studying in September, you are Brave. If you are not studying till October, something is seriously wrong with you, go for a medical check up. If you are not studying even by November —“Course chod do yaar tum! ” Economic Times is a must read but rarely can you read all of it, everyday. (I know I could not). Do this=== buy Business World once a week only Rs 10. Read the first 5 pages, called business snippets (if I am not wrong). It contains all the major happenings you should know about. If you feel something important enough to go deep into, proceed from there. Even if you don’t read ET chill. But don’t leave reading the discussions, debates on issues featured in ET. It’s not necessary to read news, not necessary to be aware, it’s necessary to have an educated opinion on it. If you are as dumb as me don’t worry, mug up opinions printed in newspapers on the Editorial pages and impress gals! Don’t waste time reading too many newspapers, journals, etc. Study, and develop your concepts, try seeing if you only know how to recite the answers or if you really understand and can defend your answers. I know I am the first one to tell you to not read too many newspapers, journals etc. This is because there are only 24 hours in a day, study hard, play harder, if you don’t relax --- you become a freak who has only answers mugged up, No conceptual understanding which stays with you 24X7. No confidence since you are confident only when you have mugged up for the last 3 days and 4 nights. It’s important to know your stuff, not mug it up. And live yar! Don’t rot in books! For GD practice--- Make groups of 6-8 members. Make sure you guys are friends. So that you don’t rip each other when egos get involved. However one act as a chairperson and keep discipline( if you can do this without getting into breaks for 8

gossiping, drinks or whatever). You can solidly prepare for GD. If you cant do it! I assure you, you will be mightily screwed in the fish market we have here. • Practice for the interviews. Conduct mock interviews amongst yourself. Ask your boyfriend/ girlfriend to take your interview instead of coochie cooing over the phone. Telephonic interviews are better than phone sex. Keep doing this till you are as relaxed as possible. Till you can answer questions like introduce yourself, why hr, why XISS, why our company, why should we take you, in your sleep. I swear to God this works! OB, Labour Laws, HRD and HRM are the most important areas for preparation. However pick one as your forte area. Fuck that up! You cannot expect a job without mastering OB and Labour Laws. An in-depth understanding of at least one is important. Know at least one; choose one area, where no body knows more than you. that’s your forte. No need to study all. You can’t … and even if you can … there are only 3.5 % chances it will help. The companies come looking for smart people who can do work without looking into books for mugging help and reference. They aint looking for bookworms who go back to look back into books as soon as they are assigned a job. They want people to manage businesses not libraries.

• •

How to prepare Labour Laws? 1. Read the Bare Acts 2. No matter what READ NABHI!!!!! 3. Acts like ID Act, CLRA Act, Factories Act, Standing Orders Act should be at your finger tips. 4. Understand the methods of calculations if any given in each Act e.g. calculation of Bonus. 5. Remember wage ceilings and other upper and lower limits given in the Acts. 6. Remember the number specified for applicability of any provisions of the Act e.g. canteens, crèches etc. 7. Understand well that to whom is an Act applicable i.e. to which persons and which establishments. 8. Read Legal News and Views and FLR available in the library to know about the latest judgments and amendments. 9. Chill Pill Funda- If you are too lazy, or dumb, just do ID act, Standing Orders, Factories Act and CLRA. But please do this inside out. Or else no one can help you!!! I mean the bare acts.

How to prepare for OB? 1. Take any one book and read your entire course. Remember read don’t mug.

9

2. Lay emphasis on areas like Motivation. Leadership, Personality, Transactional Analysis and Ego states. Any two! Know them as if you wrote the concepts. 3. Understand the organizational implications and the use of each concept in the organization. 4. Chill Pill Funda- If you are too lazy, or dumb, go to the end of the book…. Flip through the glossary. See if you know all the terms and what they mean … what you don’t know … look for the page number alongside and go and read it. This way you will finish OB in 2 days and always do this before an interview. • How to Prepare for HRD? 1. Chill Pill Funda- Read “Readings in HRD” by TV Rao. That’s all! • How to Prepare for HRM? 1. Read Lata Nair & Ashwathappa or any other book. 2. Know the entire syllabus … especially be read to relate in your words what each process encompasses. Eg. Hr audit, recruitment, discreet selection process etc. 3. Chill Pill Funda- You want some short cut here also? You are useless yar! This is your specialization, please at least study this one! • How to Prepare for IR? 1. Read Mamoria 2. Read cases on IR related to Long Term Agreements, Collective Bargaining, etc. 3. You have to be thorough with Disciplinary Proceedings and The Principles of Natural Justice. Example: You should be able to form a charge sheet, you might be asked by the interviewer to frame a charge sheet. 4. Understand the concepts and reasons behind the Grievance Handling Machinery, Conciliation, Arbitration, Adjudication, etc. 5. Understand the concepts and types of strikes and look for solutions to strikes in different situations. 6. Situational Questions are the toughest in IR interviews. So, read as many IR cases as you can. 7. Chill Pill Funda- If you are too lazy … just read whatever you can esp. pts 3, 4 and 5. Ok now get thinking. You can’t read all precedents, think what to do since most questions are case based. Be ready to defend your answers. • How to Prepare for Other Subjects? 1. Read Stoner or Robbins for General Management. 2. Know some basics of research methodology. 3. Know your honors paper at least basics. Eg. You are an accounts honors and you forgot what debit and credit stands for --- heinous crime buddy ! 10

How to Prepare Beyond Academics? 1. Do not lie to the interviewer but if you have decided to lie about something in the interview then first convince yourself that it is the truth and no more a lie. The best way of doing so is to tell the lie as truth to your friends so that you become an expert through practice. A lie in the interview is not a lie until its caught. 2. Keep examples of demonstration of your strengths ready. 3. Prepare how did you know about your weakness and what are you doing to overcome it. 4. Always substitute “weakness” by “areas of improvement”.

Good Communication Skills is very important. Don’t panic if you are not a very good communicator. You need not be flawless but your speech should be clear and you should be able to pass on the true meaning and the intended meaning across the table. This reflects Clarity of Thought. Among the first lot to be placed was a pakka Bihari Babu! So much so for fatar fatar English! How to prepare for the specific company coming for campus? 1. Collect information about the company from wherever possible. Internet is the best place for the purpose. Use google.com. 2. Go through the website of the company. Read and understand its Vision, Mission, HR Practices, Future plans, future prospects, etc. 3. Know about the industry to which the company belongs. Example: If AFL is on campus you must be able to talk about the logisitics industry after the end of the quota regime. 4. “What will you bring to the company?” is an obvious question. Prepare it beforehand. 5. “Do you have any questions for us?” is an obvious question. Don’t miss this opportunity; prepare what you will ask them. Turn the bamboo around and shove it real hard ! 6. Going through the companies website is not enough, search for articles on the company in the archives of Economic Times. It is available on the website www.economictimes.com. This will give you an edge over others. 7. Try to relate your profile with the company’s objectives and its culture. 8. Chill Pill Funda- Believe you are made for the company. Just as you believe your gal/man is made for you, all you have to do now is pass it on to the half bored 50 something jerk sitting in front of you.

Last but not the least; get your numerical ability, reasoning and English in order (MAT kind preparation) to crack the IQ or Aptitude tests. And for other pshycometric tests and Thomas profiling, relax you can’t help it. Jo man mein aaye likh dena! Kya hoga? Raam Jaane!

Killers- Unedited version

Abhishek Victor ( ACC) My experience:During the campus season i found out a very essential fact about placements and it is that NO MATTER HOW SMART YOU ARE OR ACADEMICALLY STRONG YOU WILL GET THE PLACEMENT ONLY ON THE DAY YOUR PROFILE MATCHES WITH THE REQUIERMENT OF SOME COMPANY. Its true and is a fact everyone of us experienced. Anybody who is an avrage student and has below 60% in some examination please do not worry. Be strong and show them what it takes. Guys be very very perfect about labour laws and gals stop mugginbg up labour laws and get into HR remember girls are not likely to be placed in IR jobs. Be very sure about all the subjects and remember the names of all the subjects in all the four semester its quite embarassing not knowing the names of you core subjects. Develop yourselves not only academically but also personality wise. Cool and bold attitude is the best thing to have with you. Please be calm and patient in the G.D. its not very necesary to always lead the G.D. its better to start second or third. Try to be present with mind and body in the G.D. room and show as if you are very attentive to what the others have to say. Carry a cool calm voice and look direct in the eyes of the oponents and adrress every one in the room. G.D. is easy if you are uptodate with current business events. Try to read and keep your ears open for any kind of knowledge coming your way. In the interview have answers ready and be very sure what you right in the C.V. take up the interview with a cool mind dont be over or under smart. if the Interviewer shares some knowledge do gather it might be handy in future. Try to be straight forward and answer only what is asked. be very humble and gentle and be agressive were required. And remember if i can get placed anybody can. LOVE AND PRAYERS FOR ALL MY JOUNIORS DO STAY IN TOUCH AND CONTACT IF ANY HELP IS REQUIRED. Akancha (Genome Biotech) During the placement what i lacked most was confidence and it was really scary to see others whose preparations were far far better than mine. Communication skill matters a lot so instead of feeling shy about your conversation one must take help and its not hard to find a helping hand if you look around. I started to talk in English with my friends. And i believe it actually worked wonders for the G.D.For me the hardest part was the G.D. not because i was bad but because others were better and I sat for almost 8 of them before I finally got through. Once you 12

cross the G.D. room the interview is just your academics, personality and other virtues. Try not to panic even if you do try to start panicking a little early so that by the time you are in the interview room you are through panicking. Try to be bold and never compromise with your beliefs and values. You might lie about something but the person sitting across the table will find out sooner than you expect. Take pride in who you are and never try to act over smart cause the one in front of you is smarter. As an advice i would tell all my juniors to put your heads together arrange for mock G.D's and interviews for the whole class. You should also get all the knowledge you can gather the internet is a great help. Be free to ask for help and also be ready to help others cause if one person from the class is placed that means one less competitor of the next company. Stick together that is the best way to go about any thing. BEST OF LUCK AND STUDY HARD and please stay in touch all of you. Akancha

James Antony (Punj Lloyd) Finally I got through and that too on our last working day and may be the last company on campus. Experiences of few of the companies--AFL interview was good, I was very much satisfied but I didn’t get the feeling I will make it--- didn’t happened for me. I took HINDALCO very lightly and didn’t study at all; I was bit arrogant in the interview. So don’t ever take any company lightly, Do your part properly and leave the rest to the ultimate power. GMR interview was very good, I was very much determined that GMR will be mine. But this too didn’t work for me. I was very low and all my dreams to get placed from the campus were shattered. I got prepared for the off – campus, booked my tickets, called up my seniors and alumni’s and was planning the entire phase of off-campus. My Company— But finally PUNJ LLOYD happened. My GD was very good; I was very much confident that I’ll be there for the interview, but then my name was not in the list. I thought I should speak to Mr. P.K. Gandhi (President – HR, the person who came). What happened was….When I started speaking in the G.D. Mr. Gandhi got a phone call and he was busy attending to it, so I believe he didn’t listened to me and G.D. was only for 5 minutes. I expressed the same to Mr. Gandhi, after some time he conveyed the message through David for my interview. During the interview he said, “Beta, I liked your courage, you came to me and said Sir you didn’t listen to me”. May be that was my turning point. So the moral of the story is “Grab your opportunity” Interview was superb … a bit of situational questions and rest all personal questions. I finally made it and that too an overseas location. I made it because it was my day. 13

Have a good subjective knowledge and all the latest trends in the business world. Even if you don’t get through few of the first companies don’t ever loose your confidence always believe something best is waiting for you – I am the best example for you all. Give proper justifications for the choices you have made in your life. Mind you manners and your body language. Be polite, humble and assertive and always believe in Yourself and Believe in GOD. God Bless you all, Best wishes; Jammy RANJIT- GMR Placement time is full of expectation and tensions. Placement is a process of profile matching. Companies come with the thought of picking up someone having particular skill set and they look for these in you. Be very attentive during PPT , try to judge the requirements of company and find the values they give more weightage to like positive thinking, leadership, team work etc. for those who are soft spoken , don’t be soft spoken when appearing for interviews of companies looking for IR profile. I was not selected for ACC because of my softness. Be assertive and loud and clear when answering questions. Keep a smiling face, show interest and listen to the questions properly. Be very clear what interviewer is asking then only reply. be thorough with your academics as it will give you a lot of confidence. I was one of the few who cracked all the gds and written round. Tips for gd is that reflect good body language, put your points well and give chance to the others, don’t try to dominate all the time. Prepare for written as you did for MAT or XAT. Before going inside the interview room think that you are smarter than the interviewer and you can defend yourself. This will give you a lot of confidence. If you don’t know answer to a question say sorry sir I have no idea politely. If you are not able to recall say sorry i am not able to recall at the moment and take time to think and answers accordingly. Prepare LL, OB,HRM,IR well. All the best to you all. ROHIT- ACC It was my second interview after MAFOI. in the first one i had ruined my chances. I was not prepared for most of the questions (Lesson 1: Be well prepared before appearing for any co.) and was far from being confident (Lesson 2: Be very confident, as if you don’t believe in yourself no one else will). In the interview for ACC, I was both well prepared and was full with confidence. When i entered the interview room the interviewers (one VP (hr) and the other joint president) were going through my CV (Lesson 3: Your CV should be best in the batch preferably a colour printout in bond paper). The first question was the usual introductory one. The next few questions were about difference of opinion between hr manager and line managers and how to respond to it. To most of my replies they were not agreeable, it appeared to me as if I was been put in a corner but even then I stuck to my opinions(Lesson 4: Take your time while replying and once 14

you have said something stick to it, having said that don’t appear to be stubborn). I was fortunate enough that not even one question asked to me was academic, i.e. they didn’t asked me what is OB, recruitment, selection, pa,etc. rather most of the situations given required conceptual clarity and holistic approach to management(Lesson 5: Know your subject well but don’t limit yourself just as a HR professional). for most part of the interview, I was smiling showing great interest to interact with the interviewer( Lesson 6: keep a smiling face and appear at ease don’t make a face as if your GF/BF has just run away with your best friend). To sum it all, interview is a process of buying and selling, don’t loose even one chance to impress upon the interviewers. After all you know you’re the best. Milli Das (Genome Biotech) My first interview was that of Whirlpool. We had Gds in the first round. The GD went alright next we faced interview. The interview was mainly behavioral. The questions ranged from family background, to happiest moment to highest achievement in life. Some tips: --1) Stay cool and focused 2) Dont lie, speak the truth 3) Be fluent in whatever you speak 4) Focus on your summer project 5) Prepare well esp. be thorough with your summer project 6) Face the interview with a Smile i.e. Positive attitude Though i was not able to clear Whirlpool i learned a lot.....some pitfalls: --1) I was over ambitious 2) I was not well prepared esp with OB, HRD and HRM (so prepare well in advance) Next i faced Mafoi GD and interview. This interview was again behavioral, questions ranging from strength, weakness, likes, dislikes. One important question that you should know thoroughly is # What you want to do five years from now? i was not selected for Mafoi though i learnt 2 things from this interview---# Fluency in thoughts which is a must # Preparation of important questions about oneself in advance The fifth company to enter our campus was GENOME BIOTECH....the GD was EXCELLENT we had the topic “HR is a myth" in which i was asked to speak "FOR" it. Being a HR student it was difficult though i handled it very efficiently. The interview was good. It was behavioral. Questions asked where simple but sometimes tricky. Recruiters look for candidates who show a positive attitude with loads of attitude and smartness. Some tips: ---# Be soft spoken 15

#Be clear as what you want to do in the future as a HR professional # Dont shout, speak politely #Show your interest in your own perspective #Be fluent and speak the truth. Finally I was selected in Genome Biotech. I was happy as i made to this company.....These are some of the experiences which i wanted to share with you all.....there are three important MANTRAS that should be kept in mind ....these are :---# Prepare well esp OB, HRM, LAW, HRD, OD # Be thorough with your summer project # Be fluent, positive and smart. All the Best!!!! Best of Luck!!!! Milli Avantika- AFL My entire placement experience can be summarized into if its your day no body can stop u.Its only that u have to wait 4 that day but that doesn’t mean one stop wrkng 4 that day. first hurdle is gd and 4 this one has to be prepared for every situation even when u don’t have slightest idea of the topic have to make yr mark in every situation whether in favour or not. Interview is five minute game. u have to prove yr worth in that 5 min. u need to show to the interviewer yr individuality and believe me that what wrks.never try to hide your real self do not make up for 4 any thng no matter your failures.if u dont know admit it openly as it shows yr attitude and adaptability towards organisation and learning. Avantika Rinki Prasad – TNT Well, this was the fifth company on the campus.I wasn't eligible for the first two companies-TCS &DRLas I was not a first divisioner throughout. TNT was the third company I was appearing for.Icouldn't even clear the GD of Whirlpool & AFL.And then realized I was not putting in my effort as the drive in me was missing. So, on the TNT morning I went to college with a positive frame of mind. I attended the PPT.The way things looked in the PPT I and my friends had a feeler that they are going to take a guy.Neverthless, I was determined to give my 100% whatever be the result. I cleared the G.D and then was the Interview. I was with them for 50 minutes. It was grilling obviously. They tried everything to put me under stress and I must 16

say that at one point of time I was about to give up and then realizing it I immediately gained control and also my equanimity. I, Prashant and Rahul made to the final round. I admired them - they knew exactly what kind of people they want-we three friends had the same wavelength. Then the final interview at Kolkata the next day. The man was the national head HR and was a south Indian. He was speaking too softly and showed no expressions on his face. It was great effort to hear him, trying to make out what is he saying and then answer him.Man; this was another kind of stress. Well, the interview was post mortem of my C.V., little academics and also current affairs. It seemed to me that he almost asked everything possible on this earth. Finally, ultimately, at last I made it. Final words: Be calm, confident, most importantly be humble, and know your stuff. Moral: Everybody has its own quota of struggle, hard times and failure. You have to face it, don't let the failure overcome you instead learn from your failures and move ahead. Rinki Prasad

Akanksha Gupta ( Jindal Steel) 1st company: TCS cracked written but failed in interview first round Feedback: Attitude problem!!! (Many will agree).I was sad but thought its ok my profile was not matching their need. 2 nd company: DRL thought its my company because my MSc MBA will be their perfect profile. I cracked GD but not the interview I was depressed. Companies came (Whirlpool, HCL) I couldn’t even clear GD I was frustrated like any thing confidence was at level zero. Then came AFL thought I wont appear as it is a logistics co. but their presentation impressed me (truth is that I was not having any choice was not even sure of cracking it).I cant forget that day Subroto boosted me a lot, taught the tricks of trade, interview was good and I was confident ki is bar to bas ho gaya but sorry i again failed anyway thanks Subroto!!. Next was TNT and I was not in a mood to even go through GD round result showed again failure.Mafoi was good experience I cleared GD (at last) but interview again I failed. Then came Heroin of my story Kripa she forwarded my CV to one of her friends Richa who actually asked her cv but dear Kripa forwarded cvs of all 1st class holder four were short listed and there was telephonic interview and I along with David and Amit were called for final round (courtesy....). We received five star treatment had 3 round of interview which was a mixed bag ranging from management to competency mapping. Final round was with ED it was very good i enjoyed every moment of it but due to early experiences (Doodh ka jala chach bhi fook ke pita hai) I was not at all confident of selection. Results came in and I was selected and placed at 17

Toranagallu:).Thanks to mom and dad their presence helped me finally (you can see God in MA and PAPA) Moral of Story: There is light at the end of tunnel and believe me you are going to enjoy the tunnel journey becoz atleast I have grown a lot as a human being during this period. But one caution before traveling please have friends who will be supporting you day in and out thanks to Archita,Sini, Reema, Roshni,Rinki and Sonal Thanks yaar thanks for being there.About studies identify your weakest point and make it stong kyun ki questions usi se pooche jayenge and be truthful through out the process please no egos. All the Best!! Akanksha Gupta RASHID JAFFREY: TCS + Tata Steel (PPO) ( By the time you read this, I guess both he and mukki may have jumped, Congo guys!) Try to start your interview on a lighter note. Be witty or even a smile can do. Be prepared in terms of academic questions which will certainly add to your confidence level. Prepare thoroughly on personal questions (ur strengths, weaknesses, interests, aspirations, achievements etc)My interview at TCS was more oriented towards behavioral assessment with little stress on academic questions. They did try to put me under pressure when the interviewers started a threadbare analysis(around 25 minutes) of my short term career objective(as I had mentioned in the application blank).I had a hard time defending my short-term career objective. So prepare well on your short term(2-5 years) and long term goals(5 or more years, specially for TCS Be candid with the interviewer and give honest responsesand yes dont forget to carry ur smile which can work wonders specially during stressful situations. Rashid Jaffrey

Sini Benedict (Hindalco) We all know that placement is the time when your ability to withstand pressure is tested .I faced these pressures as everybody else in my class .The only difference was that our ways of facing it was different .I had told myself that even though I might not get a job I would not try to portray myself as a different person in the front of interviewers. Because maybe I would get that job but I would have to be somebody else throughout that job which I would not be comfortable in being. My seniors used to tell me that when it is your day then nothing can change it .Even I have felt the same way because I faced questions that I had been well prepared for during my interview with the HINDALCO interview panel like they asked me how do you identify yourself with the organisation(I had prepared 18

thoroughly for these kind of questions by visiting their website and answered accordingly). There have been many things that I have learned during the placement time but one important thing that I have learnt is that only if you are aware of your positive aspects then only will you be able to make others see it . (Please do Swot Analysis of yourself with some guidance from your parents or anybody who knows you best). So, just try your best and leave everything else to God. Sini Benedict

Archita Mishra (TCS) Getting a job is a lifetime experience whether it's in first go or after many retakes. And one learns the moral of life from these experiences. And its simply that, if its your day, you get through. That exactly happened to me in my TCS interview. Its not that I performed better or others performed badly, jst they needed me and i was there. As it was my chance 2 get through, everything happened in a flow. In my interview they asked me what exactly i could handle. It happened so smoothly, that I was almost sure about the results. When the results were announced, believe me i was in total shock for 2 days. I couldn't believe that god can be so nice 2 me so soon. And every person has a day in his/her life when one is proud 2 say that god was with me 2day. Archita mishra

Mukesh Agarwal (TCS + TATA STEEL –PPO) Had a very short experience of the placement fever which is very fortunate on my part. This is because I did not prepare formally for placement until the last 2 days of TCS coming to campus. I was complacent for it, expecting a pre placement offer from TATA STEEL. Anyhow the 2 days of my preparation was a totally nerves testing effort and I tried to cover everything I could. On the final day I wasn't nervous a bit thanks to my confidence build upon my marks and a hope from TATA STEEL. "When you have nothing to lose you put in your best”, this is what I inferred from my interview in TCS.I had a very short 1st round interview and the conclusion was , "even if you speak wrong, do it with confidence", but it should be generally avoided unless you are very doubtful of the interviewer’s competency. Final round of interview-"don't let stress come on to your face and project your true picture". All the very best to my juniors. Mukesh Agarwal MADHULIKA BHAGAT-RELIANCE RETAIL 19

The aptitude test consisted of 50 questions to be solved in 12 minutes. Questions were simple and included areas like logical, mathematical, reasoning with no negative markings. So accuracy was the keyword. In the interview at RELIANCE RETAIL, there were two persons in the panel. The interview started with personal questions and then progressed to situational questions. The interview was not structured and was totally behavioral. Not a single question was asked from academics. Basically they were checking attitude. Always be honest in the interview. Good communication skills enhances the chances of success. Be confident and keep abreast yourself with the changing trends in HR.Do a SWOT analysis of yourself.U will always be asked to substantiate your statement. Always have an overview of the company for which you are going to take the interview. Madhulika bhagat Roshni Gupta-Mafoi Consultants My interview at Mafoi was completely behavioural. It began with personal ques., then to situational and then to a stress interview. The panel consisted of two persons, they were supportive. It is generally the GD where the recruiters start noticing that is why GD must be taken very seriously. Subjects like Lab.Laws, OB, HRM, and HRD must be thorough; this gives a lot of confidence. do your job sincerely because rest the Almighty will do. Roshni SUDHIR CHOUDHARY (HINDALCO) It is a well established fact that people associate happiness with that one particular moment which they finally attribute to their positive thought process. So I would say, work hard to get a taste of that moment. Believe me; I have done it so can you. Hats off to all my batch mates! SMRITI SINHA (TCS) Getting placed in the first organisation was an enthralling experience for me. In my opinion what worked for me was a sound knowledge of my summers. Together with it one needs to be relaxed, confident and charming all throughout the process especially in front of the interview panel. Work hard nonetheless, take a chill pill …. Ciao Victor Samel Kandulna (AFL) Well it was my good luck that I had not to face much hurdles in getting placed. AFL was the company on campus. I was interested in TCS but could not sit for it, as I had more than 2 years gap in studies. Second Whirlpool I was one of the 10 shortlisted but somehow could not make the cut. For AFL I was pretty sure, as the GD went quite smoothly and the interview could not have been better, indeed 20

it was sexy! What really mattered was my confidence and that saw me sail through the process. SIMI SARA MATHEW (RELIANCE RETAIL) Confidence matters, presence of mind matters, belief in God matters. A supporting best friend matters, loving and caring classmates matter. You matter! Nothing else matters. Prepare well and leave the rest to God! STEPHEN LESLIE (HINDALCO) Experiencing interview is itself a great experience. I sat for 2 interviews, the first one was in AFL and the 2nd one was in HINDALCO.Well the first interview in AFL i screwed myself as I was lacking in confidence and the eye contact with the interviewer was completely missing. I was not what I was, academically I was good and I answered all the question but the personal round i spilled it. I was not satisfied with the way things went on. Well as per the second interview I had got all the things right, the confidence, eye contact, academics and personal questions. All i can say is be yourself, and the answers which one gives should satisfy the interviewer. Interview is nothing but love at first sight that is what the response i got from the person later on who was taking my interview. Thanks a lot cheers and best of luck for the future to all the beloved juniors. Stephen Leslie Sonal Supriya-Dr Reddys Laboratories TCS -This was the first company I appeared for. The tension of "what if i don't get through "took its toll on me (i was not selected ).My feedback of the interview was that i was very casual and lacked focus. So my piece of advice to you people is as per my experience of the TCS failure : BE well prepared with all the book concepts and there practical applications as this gives us the necessary confidence .Moreover the interviewers are also not interested in the rut bookish talks. Practice your behavioural questions thoroughly 10-15any number of times it takes you to be confident while speaking also keep a check on ur expressions. Try the mirror test. look at urself while speaking and also judge urself as a recruiter whether like urself as ur own potential employee. (this works). In GD speak little ,speak substance, also let others speak. GD is group discussion and recruiters expect something substantial to come up from the discussion ,This brightens the chance not just of an individual but the group to be shortlisted for the interview. About DRL i followed everything that I ve mentioned and I was through. 21

Mritunjay Verma( ACC) Work hard and believe in yourself. Get your basics right, you can get placed even if you have decent communication skills. English and style are not all, substance matters! Pramod Jha (TCS) the interview panel were very supportive and encouraging a lot for my reply. I will suggest you to be very thorough with the basics because there is no substitute for that .for HR professionals soft skill is very important so please answer Q. softly but be confident , polite , still assertive. for situation based Q. in HR round , do not get nervous if they say u r at wrong foot and plz suggest another method for this .........because they want to know about ur analytical power and ur out of box thinking will bail you out. definitely show that u r desperate to work with that company but do not say it directly. for TCS good command over OB, HRM ,HRD(exerting more on recent happening ),and labour law(payment of gratuity act, payment of bonus act, ID Act, contract labour act , shops and establishment act,EPF act,...........cover those act which are applicable in TCS) are important.TATA Gr. of company exert a lot of importance on the sound ethical background of the candidate.so defnitely show that ur personal value system is aligned to that company..never hurt the ego of interview member and donot tell a lie too because u would be caught easily , which may be a sucidal attempt for u. at last one thing .............COMMUNICATION IS THE ESSENTIAL FACTOR FOR UR SELECTION BUT MIND IT , IT CAN'T BE THE ONLY DECIDING FACTOR OVER UR KNOWLEDGE...............

Piya (Reliance Retail) 6 months and around 15 companies later I’m finally placed! Each rejection was a major setback for my self - confidence and depression was setting in. Guess I learnt the lesson that nothing in life comes easy! In most of the companies there was a GD followed by an interview. GD topics ranged from abstract to HR related topics. Interviews included both academic questions as well as behavioral ones. My most satisfying interview was GMR, in fact in my opinion it was better than Reliance Retail. Reliance Retail interview was also divided into academics and behavioral questions. There were questions from Labour Laws, OB and HRD. Subir Sinha asked a lot of questions about the kind of books I have read..he even asked me to analyze ‘The Alchemist’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code’! It was not altogether a very taxing interview though they were checking whether I baulked under stress through cases at times. It is better to be truthful in the interview. It helps you to be prompt in replying and also maintain eye contact, which always falters if you are weaving some story (unless you are great at it). To all of you my advice is to never loose confidence in yourself. All the best to all! 22

Abhishek David (Hindalco) 9 in a row – failed. But why is there is any reason behind it or just luck? That is what you always need to look. Always assess what went wrong as per you (Not upon the feedback of interviewer – which leads you no where) in the interview and try to correct it every time. For GDs all you need to do is study ET regularly. For the rest, relax and be yourself. I went through 9 rejections, while my closest pals got in companies one shot one kill. I got disappointed but I never gave up. Don’t ever lose hope! You will get what you deserve; the going may seem tough and impossible but tell me when did you ever get a good thing without fighting for it? Every good thing is worth fighting for. Get up and fight!

THE WINNER OF THE HIGHEST EVER OFFER
M arita D’santos Whirlpool (8 lakhs p.a.) Don’t study! Ok don’t listen to me I don’t know a thing ( seriously I don’t not Labour Laws not OB except for maybe the Motivation chapter that also because I did it as my project and that also because my weirdo bookworm guide made me go through Robbins. All I did was really do my summers well and that’s what I really knew. I was lucky that I had not been asked any academic questions as my interviewer believed that academics was not an indicator of how good an individual was, it was the practical aspects that mattered and maybe I displayed that I could work. God only knows!!!! Well he liked the way I answered and I was in. One thing I do know is that I rank in the last 30 in class, I am not an expert on the academic aspect and I don’t study. But I was confident that day I told myself that I had nothing to loose as I was a loser already there was nothing more I could loose. If I lost the first company there was always a next and a next and a next. That’s all be cool – interviewers are no big shit their just humans like you and they are not sentencing you to death.

Subroto Baul - DRL This guy was asked 3 questions relating to PMS models and one about a compensation management model, which he had never heard before, also he had no idea what Zero based Manpower planning was all about, and also he had never read of a leadership model asked by the panel. Unfortunately he can’t ever recollect the names of those models (how can he, he heard it for the first time). Guess what he is one of the 2 selected at DRL. Moral of the story:” Safe 7” model for interview success: you can get selected even if you don’t answer 7 questions per interview. Go ahead enjoy your 7. Don’t panic, keep counting below the table, you can go till 7 fingers. It’s safe! Logic: they ask you 49 other questions which you answer, so? And what if you touch 7 then? Still- Don’t panic! Maybe your experience can make us redefine “safe 7” as “safe 9”. Whatsay? Godspeed mate! No matter what happens remember --23
