UPON A ROAD LESS TRAVELED BY (CIP and the LACHICAS’) One warm quiet evening late in March as my wife was busy helping the girls with their remaining school assignments, my daughter, Vita, approached me with a question: “Will I get the chance of attending again the Summer Art School at Master Pere’s, tatay?” “At Master Pere’s? Of course”, I responded absent-mindedly as I reminisced once more my unfulfilled childhood dream of dabbing oils on a canvass before the critical watch of that enigmatic Baleten-on visual artist. Many a number of young children dreams of becoming fulfilled artist someday. But the exigencies of life—money mostly and the absence of role model in their midst, kept them from pursuing it seriously. Such a dream is meant only for young people to remain just that—a dream. Then one would hear them in their adult life quip casually, “Oh, but I’m a frustrated aspiring artist!” But not Cipriano Lachica! From a distance, “Cip” or “Pere” to us Balete-on may be perceived as a quiet, unassuming man. But for those who know him, the man is of keen visual sense and single-hearted resolved characteristic of a mature master artist. A 1972 B.S. Fine Arts graduate of Feati University, Manila, Cip, right after college opted to establish himself in his hometown. There he labored to capture in his canvass the panorama of Baleten-on life— eventually followed an untrodden path and earned feathers for his cap and his heart. As in Goethe’s poem, Cip, treading upon a path, found on a shade a beautiful flower stand, Nora by name whom he married and have three children with. Together in their quiet garden, the couple imbued on their children that strong sense for beauty and the passion for discovery. Thus, upon the road less traveled by, Dave, Patrick and Stella set their minds and hearts following after their father in his restless

pursuit. Dave is a B.S. Architecture graduate while Patrick finished his B.S. Fine Arts, both at the Feati University. Stella was a Tourism major from the Centro Escolar University but just as her father and two elder brothers she is a multiawarded artist. The Lachicas of Balete are indeed recognized as accomplished artists not only locally but internationally as well. Their achievements to name a few are worth commending, viz.: • Grand Prize, 7th Caltex Sci-Art Competition • Finalist, Guhit Bulilit 5 Coco-cola • 1st Prize, First Cruztelco Nationwide Visual Art Contest • Honorable Mention, Poster Making Contest, Population and Environment International (UNPFA), New York 1992 • 3 Best Toys, The Race Against Waste, Canada • 1st Prize, First National Christmas Lantern Native Festival, Department of Tourism, 1986 • 3rd Prize, Christmas Design Competition, Paskuhan Village, San Fernando, Pampanga, 1991 • Finalist, Young Scientist Sci-Art National Competition, 1996 • 2nd Prize, National Poster Contest (Kabayanihan at Kalayaan sa Mata ng Kabataan), Philippine Centennial Celebration, 1996 • Honorable Mention, PLDT National Visual Art Competition, 2001 • Finalist, Zoom into your Right Photo Contest, Glorieta, Ayala, 2001 • Top Ten, National Parol Christmas Lantern Competition, 1990 • Finalist, Shell National Students Art Competition, 1999 For Cip and the Lachicas’, the life of an artist was and continuous to be a journey of discovery. They are aware that journeys—if they are to be of any worth—have to be fraught

with risk, perils and even doubt. They must venture into new grounds, unexpected terrain of thoughts—or else they won’t be what they are. Thus on that warm quiet evening late in March, I told my daughter, “Go, see for yourself, the minds and hearts of the Lachicas’, all laid out in their pieces for us to enjoy and comprehend!” Al F. de la Cruz February 27, 2007
