Life in College
by Jonah Beatriz Celebre
College is about learning. It is not as simple as learning whatever it is that is being
taught in your required classes, though. It is about learning how to listen, how to speak, how
to think. Learning who you are, who your friends are, the type of people you want as
friends. Learning how to trust your innermost feelings, and how to find those feelings in
the first place. It is about learning what is really important to you, and learning what you
really do not give a damn about.
Leaving from home and exploring ones own dreams are a very important part of
maturing. Though, the physical separation from home is for some a difficult
transition to college life. What are those things one takes for granted
while living at home, and attending high school? What changes does one face
upon entering college?
College life is an experience one can never forget. The memories of high
school still linger in every college students thought, but there are so many
other issues to deal with while attending college. Stress is a word that no
high school student can fully understand until entering college. There are
some similarities to home life and college life, but the differences seem
infinite. Though, college life may seem adventurous; every college student
knows exactly how good it feels to go back home.
.

Being a mother how did you spent
time with your kids?
Well... At home we just want the kids

happening in there study.
What is your proudest moment being
a mother?
As of now the only proudest moment
is raising the four kids and having a
daughter who will be entering college
soon. But the time comes when she
finished her study in college and I’ll
be the proudest mom ever.
How would you describe your best
being a mother?

mother with me who helps me
taking care of my kids, and the
three children are already in
school so that is the time my

Human intelligence is constantly challenged. Start-
ing from the humble beginnings of our existence up to the
present times, we face difficulties that only progress and
development can solve. It is only then that we realize how
important it is to adapt to the modern technology. Technol-
ogy which makes our lives easier.

We now have the computer, an essential part of our modern
living. We may not be aware of it, but most of the things we
live with require the intervention of the computer in one way
or another. It also plays a big role in the society particularly in
education, economy and communication.

Unfortunately, not all have access to the computer. Lacking the knowledge in using it may not
be fatal; however, in the modern world we live in, knowing the basics of the computer can lead you
into the betterment of your life. And recently, the BSIT-1A students of ACLC College took an action to
make a difference.

th
day of March 2013, 12:00 noon. The student volunteers started to assemble in the rendez-
vous – Dioricos Bakeshop. Each of them coordinated in preparing for the program they will hold later,
which would serve as their final project for NSTP. They entitled this program: “Basic Computer Informa-
tion for the Out-of-school Youth”. Finally when everything is believed to be settled, they set foot towards
the location.

The weather’s fine and there’s a gentle glimpse of the sun amid the clouds. The good Lord
made not the walk difficult for them. After a minute or two, they made their way to a narrow path that
leads to their destination. However, confusion arose when they lost their way in this unfamiliar place.
And so they took another route. Step by step they watched where they’re going, until they saw that
bright orange-coated, two-story building. At last!, they reached the Multi-purpose Hall of Brgy. 51 Ma-
gallanes.

In front of the building is a basketball court, where at that time, most of the program partici-
pants were playing. Some of them curiously laid their eyes in the group of strangers nearing the Baran-
gay Hall. They might be wondering what these “beautiful” and “handsome” strangers (wink) were do-
ing in their Barangay.

Now the student volunteers entered the building and greeted a pleasant afternoon to the
person inside, who was the Brgy. Councilor. They were welcomed warmly. After all the legal papers to
be documented like the log book, they immediately prepared the room, ensuring that the sitting ar-
rangement and every detail shall be conductive for learning. The participants was then summoned to
the Brgy. Hall, most of them out-of-school youths. One by one they went upstairs and had their seat.

It was becoming warm that afternoon. It’s definitely not a good thing because it might affect
the mood of the participants. Fortunately, the nearby sea gives a cool breeze which circulates around
the room. And the open windows keep the proper ventilation.

When the participants finally settled, the student volunteers introduced themselves. They also
wore these colourful nametags. And they were stranger no more. The participants were oriented what
the program will be about – “basic computer knowledge”. And how do you know, they were inter-
ested!
What’s a good way to start a program? With a prayer! And so they did, the song “The Prayer”
was played. It was followed by the National Anthem. After that, before the lecture begun, the partici-
pants filled up some basic information about them. It’s nice to see how willingly the volunteers helped
some youth who needed assistance in filling up that time. The papers were then submitted and the
lecture begun.

“Maupay nga kulop!”, Maryrose, the group leader, cheerfully greeted. I was amazed
how the participants replied back warmly. And to set the mood, another volunteer,
Doris, asked them: “Who among you owns a facebook account? Or who among you
plays DOTA or other computer games?” Most raised their hand and tell that they al-
ready had some computer-related activities. Some even enumerated the websites
they’ve been to. On the other hand, the younger ones answered that they lack basic
computer knowledge.

A video presentation was played about the basic computer parts. The partici-
pants focused on the monitor of the laptop. That time, the older ones started to make
unnecessary noise, which started a series of noise after another. Calmly, they were
told to listen and behave well. And so they did. Right after the video presentation, the
topic was discussed concisely. Another video presentation was played, which this
time is about the software and application. Then right after, a brief discussion was
made, emphasizing the relevance of these things. The next lesson is the proper usage
of a computer unit and how to use all ten fingers in typing on the keyboard.

Some participants along the lessons seem interested, while some were bored.
The bored ones left the room and even exclaimed in a mean way: “Mapiraw man!”
before leaving. I can see that some of the student volunteers were upset; however,
they continued the program and focused on the interested ones who were willing to
learn.

The participants took interest in the gaming related feature of the computer.
This lesson is about playing computer games with the use of Local Area Network
(LAN), where one could connect to another computer unit even without internet
connection. And this time, the participants who play computer games noticeably
focused more on the discussion.

Then came the time where the participants were given the chance to apply
what they’ve learned. First of which was typing using all of the fingers. The available
laptops, approximately 5 units were occupied by the participants, with each of them
an assistant. They used the typing tutorial application called “Typing Master”. Most of
them struggled at first, but I got to admit, they were fast learners. The participants
were enjoying it; they even were volunteering to be the next one to try. Snacks were
distributed among the participants, which surprisingly went smooth and not messy.
These simple snacks were appreciated.

Time surely flies when you’re enjoying. The program is about to end. Laptop
units were shut off. Chairs were arranged into its old position. Biscuit wrappers were
thrown properly. And the table they used was set aside. The participants together
with the student volunteers were eager to strike a pose when picture taking was held.
Wacky shots were even made.

Now it’s time to say goodbye. The participants thanked them for the effort
they’ve done. They all went downstairs; the student volunteers thanked the officials
for welcoming them into their barangay. Pictures were taken. They also had their time
to thank the officials for allowing them to have this opportunity - the opportunity to be
a teacher for a day.

Surviving College
Surviving College

Rise up, fellow college students! In this stage of our lives, our intellectual and
physical limits will be tested. Pack up all you’ve got, you will need those as we enter
in this battlefield called ‘COLLEGE’, with the mission of earning an employment ticket
called ‘DIPLOMA’ and the goal of doing good ‘till the judgement day called
‘GRADUATION’.

Fellow college student, we need to realize that high school days are over.
Unlike before, we should already know the priorities to set in this journey. We might
as well continue the way of our lives before, however, in doing so, we need to con-
sider the consequences of the things we do. Life will be harder now, for sure.
But do not be disheartened. College life offers us not only difficulties but also
nostalgic memories of our lifetime. The bonds we create with the people we’ll meet
or have already met will make our college years easier. Symbolically, those
‘comrades’ will at times reload our artilleries when it’s out of ammunition. They
maybe our classmate, schoolmate, dorm roommate or instructor.
Balancing our academic and social life is very essential. In liberated socie-
ties, social life is very important. Attending parties, meeting new friends and jam-
ming with your old friends may be a part of your life. And you may be used to staying
up all night having some drinking session with your friends. But you see, during col-
lege, academics should be more prioritized. Unless you want your grades to suffer,
put your social activities into moderation.
Times will come when you’ll find yourself tearing your hair out because of
the demands of academics. Stressful home works would sometime steal your slum-
ber time. Sleep will also be deprived during examination week. And that – is called
college life.
Dr. Randall S. Hansen, founder of MyCollegeSuccessStory.com, shared some
tips to make college life much easier: Find an ideal place for you to study. It may be
your room or a cozy corner of the library, but find a place that works best for you to
get your work done -- while avoiding as many distractions as possible. Don't procras-
tinate, It may have been easy in high school to wait until the last minute to complete
an assignment and still get a good grade, but that kind of stuff will not work for you
in college. Give yourself deadlines -- and stick to them. Don't feel pressured. Be pre-
pared to feel completely unprepared. The trick is knowing that you're not the only
one feeling that way. Make connections with students in your classes. It expands your
network of friends -- and is a crucial resource at times when you to miss a class. And
finally, Make time for you. Be sure you set aside some time and activities that help
you relax and take the stress out of your day or week. Whether it's watching your
favourite television shows, playing games or having a music jam, be good to yourself.

Those are useful tips, aren’t it?

We are one with the goal of improving the lives of our fellow college stu-
dents. We are one with the goal of surviving and being successful in college. At all
times, college students must act accordingly – in the aim of a bright future.

You may have heard
the story of the ugly duckling,
the character of the duck in
the story is that she was dif-
ferent, therefore she was mis-
treated differently like an out-
cast. In other words, she was
being ‘bullied’.

To be bullied can be one of the worst feelings anyone
may feel, it may feel like someone throws stones at you for no
reason, and all you can do is to ignore the pain and try to avoid
them.
Too bad bullying is not a crime to be punished by law, if
so people being bullied would have more confidence and cour-
age within their selves. People being bullied may tend to lose
respect for themselves, they consider weakness as a part of
them. The arrogance and cruelty of the world is felt when you
are being bullied, hence one cannot fight back so easily, courage
isn’t something one can easily gain, it takes time. The blindness
of a bully results to injustice to others.
It’s true that some bully might had experienced
some hurtful situation that led them to being mean and
unpleasant to other people. They might also feel inse-
cure and that no one likes them - and who would with
their unpleasant behaviour? “But still, even bullies need
some people who they feel would accept them for who
they are even if being accepted for who they are scares
them.” (TG Philippines)
So if you’re in the situation where you are be-
ing bullied, it will be up to you either you will be living
in a life where others think you are a loser, or you can
show them that you are worthy of a respect. It will be a
great escape from your heartache you got from them.
Don’t let them obliterate you.
As I used to say to myself:
“Don’t be a useless coward
Because it will be so awkward
That you can’t go forward
And you might find yourself in an abandon ward”.

Pregnancy may not be planned by

the perfect plan of our Creator.
Pregnancy during the teenage
years is a bombastic situation,
one that comes unexpectedly. For
a student facing unexpected preg-

spiritual issues can seem over-

may have been the result of the
lack of supervision from the par-

child would.
I am happy
that she bore her

And I am wishing her the best.
She proved me that early preg-
nancy must not be a hindrance to
fulfil our dreams. She continued
to strive for her goals, goals
which make her stand out and
face all the consequences & trial
she meet.
In our modern society,
being pregnant at an early age
can’t be helped. Though it is not a
crime to be pregnant, it doesn’t
mean it is proper to do so. Being
teenage mom learns the paren-
tally responsibility in their young
age, so their child becomes their
motivation, motivation to go
through and conquer all the hard-
ships, criticisms and judgement of
the other people. And parents
should be able to accept their
explanations so that their stress
will lessen. And the family must
willingly support their children
not abandoned them, so that they
would not attempt to abort the
child. They do abortion because
of fear, Fear of being unaccepted,
fear of unknown and lots and lots
of fear.
Pregnancy is a gift. The
baby is a great gift from God. We
must understand that pregnancy I

When did it all fall apart?
I really believed that this was worth fighting
for, but somewhere along the way I was proven
wrong. I think what’s worse than losing some-
one, is not knowing why you lost them, and hon-
estly I don’t know how I lost you.

Dear One’s,
I am happy to be your friend. But above all, I am happy to
have met someone like YOU.

Just because we don’t talk doesn’t mean I
don’t think about you anymore. I’m just trying
to distance myself because I know I can’t have

Dear Tatay,
I want to say thank
you for everything you did for
me. I want you to know how
much you mean to me. You’re
my everything, the reason
why I smile, the reason that I’m
inspired and the reason why I
live.
I love you so much.

Lovelots,
Nanay
Ma’am Felice,
Would it be awkward to say that I
have a crush on you? Not so much I
guess, because I’m sure more students like me
also do. Could I have been born a little bit ear-
lier, I could have courted you..
I know you know you’ve got the beauty,
I know you know you’ve got the wit,
I know you know you’ve got the brains,
But what you do not know is that you’ve also
got my heart!
-Anonymous
Shai,
I don’t know what to say..
I want to apologize to you if there have
been any circumstance that I have hurt you.
Circumstances aren’t in our favour, so I de-
cided to distance myself.
And I want you to know that you are
desirable, worthy of a man’s true love.

Kuya Rave,
Thanks for letting us copy your assignments and for ex-
plaining it to us afterwards, LOLS! But that is not the reason
why I wrote this message. I wrote this because I want you to
know that you inspire me. And please kuya, smile more
often, lagi ka kasing seryoso eh. :)
P.S. they say that if one is good in Math, he is poor in English.
Or if one is good in English, he is poor in Math. You are the
exception.

Another Perspective Towards
The Gadgets
by Myra Gravoso
With gadgets we are becoming more and more efficient and optimised. I feel they are
perhaps taking out a lot of the uncertainty in life by not really allowing us to take as many
chances. They have allowed us to get stuck in routines and take our work home with us after al-
ready working all day. Perhaps being too connected hindering our lives. Rather than making them
easier and what about happiness? Does happiness lie within routine or when you twice chance and
break that routine? Come to think of it. I just recently read this column and I found it interest-
ing to share. Here are some ways technology and the high-tech lifestyle may be hurting you.
1. Computer Vision Syndrome
The human eye is not adapted for staring
at a single point in space for hours on end.
If you log significant time in front of a
computer monitor, you've probably experi-
enced computer vision syndrome: eyestrain,
tired eyes, irritation, redness, blurred vi-
sion, and double vision. Luckily, this isn't a
permanent condition; but persistent strain
can open the door to infection.
2. Insomnia
Working into the evening face-to-face with
an illuminated monitor can play havoc with
your internal clock. Replace work with ex-
citing stuff like video games after dark,
and you have an even more potent recipe
for a sleepless night. One study showed
that playing a game involving shooting sup-
pressed levels of melatonin, the hormone
that's involved in regulating cycles of sleep
and waking.
3. Repetitive Steps
Injuries he constant tiny movements
needed to maneuver a mouse or type on a
keyboard can irritate tendons; swelling can
press on nerves. As little as a half hour a
day of computer mouse use could put you at
risk for pain in your shoulder or hand.
4. Obesity
There's a much more direct relationship between
obesity and a digital lifestyle. It comes from
spending too much time sitting on your rear. It's
not late-breaking news that Americans are get-
ting fatter and that kids are packing on extra
pounds at a younger age. The hours per day
Americans spend glued to the tube has been
trending steadily upward, according to the Niel-
sen Co., with households leaving the set on for an
average of eight hours and 14 minutes per day
during the 2006-2007 .
5. Hearing Damage
Even when we're out and about, we take our elec-
tronics with us, often in the form of iPods or
other digital music players. It's nice to be insu-
lated from the hurly-burly of modern life, but
listening to music through headphones can in-
crease the risk of hearing loss.
6. Office Related Asthma
Your sleek, high-tech office may be a source of
indoor air pollution. Some models of laser print-
ers shoot out invisible particles into the air as
they chug away. These ultra-fine particles can
lodge deep in your lungs. Not every printer is a
health hazard. In one study of 62 printers, 40%
tested emitted particles. But only 17 printers
were high-particle emitters.

Belted floral dresses..
Moving away from corporate looks for the office, spring 2013 offers up the belted floral dress as a 9-5 staple. Expect a
feminine, cinched in shape and longer hem (think above the knee to midi length). Work-appropriate it may be, but we expect to
see the ladylike belted floral dress worn for many an occasion through the season.

mends my broken heart when I’m dejected. I truly
cherish Him. Why in the world would I kill him?!
Or did I…..???
No, no, no!, never!!
Although, Nathaniel is my parent’s favour-
ite, the perfect son as they consider him. He have
got many friends, almost everyone like him. Back
on high school years, he is Mr. Popular. And intelli-
gent in nature, he consistently get medals and
awards..
Compared to me…
Even though we look perfectly alike, no
one likes me. The moment they knew about my
mental disorder, it’s over, I’m rejected. I’d like to
show them that like my brother, I also am worth
something. But I never had the chance to shine,
because my brother’s prestige always overshadows
me. I remembered those times when I was bullied
by my classmates, the time when people avoided me
as if I will harm them.
My head started to become hazy, I’m feel-
ing it again.. that insurmountable spirit that resem-
bles that mental disorder. I’m starting to be that
person who they think killed my brother.
Until…
A familiar voice spoke…
“Please forgive me Andres, you know I did
this because I love you. I want to end your misery,
all those sufferings you endured throughout these
years. And so that night.. I intended to hide your
medicine.. you lost control.. Psychosis took over
you. I saw an opportunity to execute my plan. My
plan to kill you. And made it look that I am the
one killed. I did this for you brother, because I love
you”.
I was horrified by the revelation I’ve
heard…
The grave I was visiting all this time, was
not my twin brother’s.. but mine.

“Nightmare” “Nightmare”
by Raven B. Lorica

I did not kill my brother!

He whom I share all my happiness and sor-
rows, he who lightens the burdens of my soul, and
he, the second half of my life, my twin brother, I
would never do that to him!
This I always exclaim, but no one would
listen. In their condemning eyes, I am nothing but a
murderer. A worthless scam bag who killed his twin
brother.
“Please tell me Nathaniel, you don’t believe
them, do you?” I asked my brother as I stand in front
of his grave. And here I am again, teardrops flowing
from the windows of my soul down to my cheek. I
just needed someone who will listen, someone who
will understand my situation. But no one seems to
care. No one.
My parents, my beloved parents, they don’t
seem to recognize my existence anymore. When I’m
around, they just look through me as if I’m transpar-
ent as air. What do I expect, they believe those peo-
ple, who never knew anything but to condemn. And
what hurts most, they never talk to me anymore.
Silence and miserable face, that’s the only answer I
get. This would never happen if it weren’t for that
night, when this entire nightmare started.
That night when I forgot to take my medi-
cine, for a mental disorder I have. A mental disorder
that made me a pest to the society. That keeps me
rejected by anyone who knew it. A mental disorder
as they call it – “Psychosis”.
There have been times before when I lost
control, and completely let this disorder takeover
me. I become unreasonably violent, and uncon-
sciously put the lives of the people around me in
danger. But that person I become, that is not me,
not at all! I am a peace loving person.. a kind soul..
all I want is to have friends. A part of my life which I
never had. Nathaniel is all I’ve got.
And my brother, my caring brother, he
knows all my sufferings throughout these years. He’s
the only one who truly understands my situation. He

Confidence is all you’ve shown
As you greeted us with smiles
You erase our worries away

As you begin with the lesson
Awe is filled within us,
As you captivate us with your powerful mind
You never failed to leave us speechless

The sound of your voice
Is a perfect melody to our ears
The calmness of your face
Is pleasing to our eyes

A name we will never forget
A name we already carved into our minds

Hoping you know
How much you’re being admired
Having you as our teacher
God just answered our prayers

Upsetting you is what we fear
For you give us so much glee
Someone like you is hard to find
Among the instructors you’re one of a kind.

SPORTS
P A G E 1 9 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1
Online gaming or sports? I must agree both brings enjoyment. Both can enhance our strate-
gic minds, both can establish teamwork.

But in these modern generation, teenagers are getting less interested in sports. Before, the
words “game or play” can only be mostly be heard or seen in a sports competition like basketball,
volleyball, etc. But now you see them in all online games. Online gaming had made the word “play”
into much simplicity, where one does not have to put so much effort into a game, you can just sit
back and through mouse clicking and simply typing into the keyboard, you are already online gam-
ing, that simple. Tendency a teenager lacks proper exercise because the world technology becomes
their pastime, but sports can give all variety of physical exercise.
They say why exert so much effort on a sport when you have computers to have fun with? Or
why tire yourself on sports and risk yourself when there a possibility of being injured. Our body has a
constant energy 4 500 000 000 000 000 000 joules, shouldn’t we be making use of that free en-
ergy? With our time now, not all things can be gotten free so let’s enjoy this free gift from God.
plus the confusing cartwheel stand of Romel Closa of
Batug Galliots, ending the first set with 15-lead of
Batug Galliots.
A nerve-wracking cartwheel stunt was contin-
ued to release by Closa that led to a substitution of
Alvin Cain by Erwin Camposano.
Batug Galliots tried to intimidate the opposing
team by unleashing a fearfull cartwheel stunt of Closa
but his handkill drive was blocked by nuggets Nilo
Deloria that made Batug Galliots made in shock.
Closa avenged by throwing off deadly head
drives on Batug gymnasium which ended the second
set with a score of 15-10, in favour of Batug Galliots.
With powerful and vigorous combination
of kicks and strikes, Batug Galliots conquered
Calzada nuggets with scores in two sets, 15-10,
15-10 in the first Sepak Yakraw league game
held at Batug gymnasium last March 2, 2013.
Watched by throng of spectators, the
game started when Dandel Icban of Calzada,
Javier Leyte unleashed a whirlwind serve into
the maze.
Each team was measuring the offensive
and defensive capabilities of their opponent
during the first set of the game.
A sharp, round horse serve was sent into
the air by Dandel Icban responded by hard-
hitting frontal kicks of nuggets Romeo Lubang
