COLLEGE BRIEFS

BYU knocks Texas out of final four
Longhorns upset for
second straight season
in volleyball semifinal
OKLAHOMA CITY — Jennifer Hamson had 22 kills and
Alexa Gray added 19 to help
BYU beat Texas 25-23, 25-16,
17-25, 26-24 in the NCAA
women’s volleyball semifinals
Thursday night.
The unseeded Cougars
(30-4) hadn’t been to the semifinals since 1993, and they advanced to the final for the first
time. They will take a 12-match
winning streak into the final
against the Stanford-Penn
State winner.
Texas (27-3) was upset for
the second consecutive year.
Wisconsin beat Texas in last
year’s semifinals, and the Longhorns had said they were focused on avoiding another surprise.
Chiaka Ogbogu led the
Longhorns with 14 kills. Haley
Eckerman, Texas’ first-team
All-America middle blocker,
had just nine kills and a .033
hitting percentage.
Sam Houston, North Dakota State meet in semifinal:
One month into this season,
two of the top programs in the
Football Championship Subdivision were facing different
questions. Some wondered if
North Dakota State would lose.
Others were asking if Sam
Houston State would win.
Now the teams are squaring
off Friday night at the Fargodome (7 p.m., ESPN2) with a
trip to the FCS title game in
Frisco on the line.
The Bison (13-1) came into
the year on a 24-game winning
streak and stretched that to 33
before falling to Northern Iowa

in the 10th game. The Bearkats
(11-4) lost three of their first
four games before winning 10
of their next 11, including the
last eight.
The three-time defending
FCS champion Bison and
Bearkats have become familiar
foes since the Bison moved up
from Division II a decade ago.
NDSU defeated Sam Houston
in back-to-back FCS title
games to cap the 2011 and 2012
seasons. Before that, the teams
met in two wild regular-season
games, with the Bison winning
41-38 in 2007 and Sam Houston prevailing 48-45 in 2009.

Thursday, and lawyers for both
sides said coaches, administrators and players could ultimately be called to testify about
who is calling the plays for the
Longhorns.
At issue is whether Wickline
is calling plays. Wickline says
he is. Oklahoma State says he’s
not and wants him to pay a
$600,000 penalty, arguing he
took a lateral move to Texas,
not a promotion as specified in
his contract. On Thursday, a
judge in Stillwater allowed the
school’s case against the coach
to proceed in that state.
About three hours later in
Austin, a judge heard arguments whether to dismiss
Wickline’s counter lawsuit but
indicated she may not rule until January.

Offensive line coach not
returning to Texas A&M:
Coach Kevin Sumlin announced offensive line coach
B.J. Anderson will not return
to the staff and won’t coach the
Aggies against West Virginia in
the AutoZone Liberty Bowl on
Dec. 29.
No reason was given for the
move, but A&M’s offensive line
didn’t live up to expectations
this season. Anderson had
coached under Sumlin at
Houston and moved to Aggieland with him in 2012.
