CLINICAL FOCUS IN COMMUNICABLE DISEASE HOSPITAL



Care of the clients with communicable disease.

Clinical Area: Pavillions 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, ER and OPD

Agency or Hospital: San Lazaro Hospital

Area Description: The five-day clinical exposure in San Lazaro Hospital includes wide range of clinical
learning experiences on the care of patients with various communicable disease, applying the nursing
process as the core of the nursing practice, and application of related skills with the clinical instructor’s
supervision. Discussions are included on the disease process, diagnostic tests and procedures in relation
to the organ systems involved, the use of appropriate care plans and application of independent and as
well as dependent interventions. Review on the medical and therapeutic concepts together with
acquisition of current trends in the nursing field are incorporated during the 8 hour shift.

Placement: 3rd year, 2nd Semester

Total No. of Hours: 40 RLE hours

Time: 7 am- 3 pm

General Objective: At the end of the course, the student should be able to utilize the nursing process in
the care of patients with communicable disease, use organized and accurate documentation system, relate
with clients appropriately, observe bioethical concepts/ principles, core values and nursing standards in
the care of clients and promote professional growth of self andothers.

Day 1

Be oriented with the hospital
physical set up,general rules and
policies, organizational structure
of the hospital, expectations and
requirements.

Days 2-5

At the end of the 8-hour duty,
student will be able to:

1. Recall on the concepts and
scope of care of the clients with
communicable disease.

2. Conduct comprehensive
nursing assessment to the
assigned clients.




3. Formulate an individual plan
of care to the assigned clients
with communicable disease.

4. Perform plan of care to
assigned client and carry out
doctor’s orders.











5. Perform assessment and
management for animal bite
patients. (OPD)

6. Perform health teaching.

7. Triage nursing. (ER, TB
triage)




1. Conference and discussion.



2. Nursing assessment
a. review of patient’s
documents/ chart.
b. gathering of data via
interview and physical
assessment





Bedside care with the following
but not limited to:
a. VS monitoring
b. changing/discontinuing of
IVF
c. administration of oral and
parenteral drugs including
vaccines for animal bite
patients.
d. CTT care
e. NGT feeding
f. nebulization and chest
physiotherapy


Administration of anti-rabies
vaccine, tetanus toxoid, ATS,
and ERIG.
