IRON MAN 2 ‘BIGGER & BETTER’
Iron Man gets a partner, Don Cheadle

Mickey Rourkemakes a creepy villain

T

HE INTENSE, funny, always creative world that was the Iron Man 2 film set was an experience that no one involved will ever forget. Not least Robert Downey Jr. the man who brings Tony Stark aka Iron Man so vividly to life.
It was a blast, he says. Although at times, Downey Jr. admits that the artistic process on set can seem a little crazy, especially for the newcomers who joined the actor and director Jon Favreau this time around. “Our process is crazy,” he jokes. “Ask anybody and they’ll say ‘I don’t know how they get these results from that process..’ In a way, it’s like asking somebody to step inside a washer/ dryer with you – you tell them, ‘look, there’s going to be a lot of tumbling and stuff and yet you’re going to come out looking like you’re in a tuxedo..’ It doesn’t make sense but it works.” It certainly does. Iron Man was released to universal critical acclaim and went on to dominate the box office in 2008 and the sequel – with a stellar cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow back as Pepper Potts, Samuel L. Jackson (who made a brief appearance as Nick Fury in the first movie) and Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell bringing to life new characters - is one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year. Downey Jr and Favreau set out with one clear aim – to make Iron Man 2 bigger, better, more exciting than the first one, which told the ‘origin’ story of how Tony Stark the playboy arms dealer comes close to death before realising that he wants to embark on an entirely different path with the ultimate weapon, the Iron Man suit, and use it for good. The actor reveals that one of the central themes in

Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr.

the film is partnerships; Tony Stark’s relationship with Pepper Potts (his former personal assistant now promoted to CEO of his company), his friendship with Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes (Terence Howard in the first film, now played by Don Cheadle) and the growing influence of Nick Fury (Jackson) who reveals that Iron Man’s destiny is linked to S.H.I.E.L.D, an international law enforcement organisation, which, like the Iron Man character, comes from the original Marvel comics. “We wanted to explore the relationship between Tony and Rhodes more the last time but there was a lot of origin story to tell,” he explains. “And with Don in the role there’s a kind of reinventing of that relationship. Iron Man 2 picks up six months after the first film ended and Tony Stark is under a lot of pressure. The military and politicians want him to reveal the secrets of the Iron Man suit to them and he’s constantly under the microscope of media attention. There’s also a threat in the intimidating, violent persona that is Ivan Vanko waiting menacingly in the wings. “We set ourselves up for this one by having Tony say he was Iron Man last time,” he says. “So you have a story at the end of which you give away the trump card that usually every other franchise doesn’t. And I think we got a lot of brownie points for that because it was somewhat unexpected. “But the question is, how do we keep doing the

unexpected? And the answer is that we keep going deeper into the reality of what it would be like if you were that guy and that had happened to you and you had said you were Iron Man. “And I said I would probably really need a drink. I would also probably feel really high on myself and feel like I had it all going on and I would feel invincible but I would also know that pride comes before a fall and particularly with the likes of Nick Fury, played by Sam Jackson, telling me that there is a much larger universe than I can ever understand.” Downey Jr. played a key part in helping to recruit Mickey Rourke for the role as the main villain in Iron Man 2. And once Rourke was committed to the film, he immersed himself in preparation and even took himself off to a real prison in Moscow to research his character, an ex-convict with a serious grudge against the Stark family. “Mickey is sweet and smart and very contrary to any other perception of him – he’s an actor, an artist, he’s complex and he’s as tortured as any of us on our most tortured day, so there was something very dynamic about putting us up against each other.” Downey Jr is keen to continue the adventure with a third Iron Man film and appearances in the interlinked films that are planned by Marvel Comics, like The Avengers. “Absolutely. There’s still so much story left to tell,” he says. “I think the next story is the one where you can start going as far out as the comics went. And with the advent of films like Avatar – and I’m a big fan of sci-fi – we can explore and do different things. I think we’ve grounded the first two so that the audience will believe wherever we take them.”

Gibo Teodoro is set to beat his rivals on May 10. This bold prediction was made by Lakas-Kampi- CMD President Francis Manglapus. Cebu Rep. Pablo Garcia assured Teodoro of at least 1 million votes from Cebu province, di pa kasama dito ang Cebu City. Garcia said, “the pople of Cebu are beginning to takes a second look at Teodoro.” At sa aking pananaw umarangkada si Teodoro nitong “last mile” of the campaign period bunsod ng limang aspeto: 1. Positive campaign; No hate campaign, no mudslinging; 2. Inindorso siya ni former President Erap bilang most qualified to run for president; 3. Party machinery support from national to regional to barrangay level; 4. Significant number of undecided voters slowly going for Gibo. opportunities for counseling and assistance on micro-entrepreneurship, skills demonstrations, and others. Labor Undersecretary Lourdes M. Trasmonte, who chairs the DOLE’s Labor Day 2010 Steering Committee, said the opportunities during the nationwide fair comprise a wide range and variety of jobs here and abroad available to qualified job seekers. Based on the tentative inputs of the various DOLE’s Regional Offices (RO), the productive opportunities are from the country’s vibrant Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and Information Technology (IT) services industries, the construction, wholesale and retail, engineering, automotive, food and beverages, catering, hotels and restaurants, agriculture and agri-related business, transportation, manufacturing, apparel, education, banking and finance, travel and tourism, real estate, hospital and medical services, and other sectors.

Labor day job fair
HERE’S a bit of good news to job seekers in the country. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said that over 100,000 jobs will be available in job fairs slated in Metro Manila and across the 15 other regions of the country on Labor Day, May 1, 2010. "We'll offer 100,000 local and overseas jobs mostly in construction and business process outsourcing (BPO)," he said. The SMX Labor Day program on May 1, the TUCP will read and hand-over a Labor Roadmap 2010-2015 titled “Towards Full Realization of Decent Work” which will highlight greater respect and promotion of core labor standards, productive employment, social protection (OSH, reproductive health, family planning, HIV and Aids, unemployment insurance) and social dialogue – engagement of labor in decision-making

process at all levels. Roque said the nationwide job and livelihood fairs will be the key highlight of the Labor Day 2010 celebrations across the country in honor of the Filipino workers on the theme, “Manggagawang Pilipino, Kaagapay sa Pagbabago.” The Labor and Employment Chief emphasized that the “JOBS LIVE!” job fair will be joined, in the National Capital Region (NCR), by around 150 employers that would make available some 80,000 job vacancies abroad and about 30,000 opportunities for local employment, complemented by the employers and legitimate overseas recruiters offering more opportunities in the regional job fairs. At the same time, Roque said that “JOBS LIVE!” will feature livelihood components carrying for sale/display of a wide variety of attractive Philippine products and handicraft made chiefly by the beneficiaries of the DOLE’s assistance programs for the disadvantaged Informal Sector, along with

More trees at parks, Echiverri answer to global warming
RECOGNIZING that everyone should do his or her share in somehow reducing the harsh effects of global warming, Caloocan Mayor Enrico “Recom” Echiverri ordered yesterday the planting of more trees in all parks in the city. Echiverri said, the directive, which was given to the city’s Parks Development Office, is intended to help fight global warming and at the same time beautify Caloocan by planting trees. According to the mayor, planting trees would help reduce the offshoot of global warming, among which the abnormally hot weather the country is experiencing. He said that the whole world is trying to contend with such adverse effects. “Because of the intense heat, a lot of people now experience heat strokes. We need to unfurl a ‘green blanket’ on our city with trees in order to preserve our own health,” Echiverri said.

GROUP QUIZZES NOYNOY ANEW
A REPUTABLE civic group revealed yesterday that Liberal Party presidential candidate Sen. Noynoy Aquino had been a patient in the early 1980s of a prominent Bostonbased psychiatrist. The group also demanded that the LP presidential candidate should reveal his medical history. At a press briefing, the Citizens for the Right to Information identified the doctor who treated Aquino as Dr. Steven Agular, who had worked in the psychiatric department of the Newton Wellesley College. “The mental health of any candidate for president is not a private matter. We demand full disclosure,” said veteran journalist Carmen (Chit) Pedrosa, a convenor of the group made up of respectable women leaders, academicians and professionals. Pedrosa said the Aquinos lived in Newton from 1981 to 1983, the time the family lived in exile. “Most of their friends there were doctors and the Agulars were one of them. When Ninoy Aquino asked Dr. Agular to look at his son, he knew the doctor was a specialist in psychiatry,” Pedrosa said. The information, Pedrosa said, was confirmed by one of the founders of the First Philippine Fund, a friend of the Pedrosas who remembered at a board meeting that Dr. Agular told him that “Noynoy Aquino was his patient.” Because of recent revelations about Noynoy Aquino’s history of alleged psychiatric treatment, the person said he had to re-think what the doctor meant when he said “Noynoy was his patient.” Pedrosa said Noynoy’s mother, former President Cory Aquino, had suggested to the Chairman of the First Philippine Fund that the doctor be invited to be a member of the Fund’s Board. “Voters have a right to know Noynoy’ background, as well as his physical and mental health so they can decide whether he is fit for the most difficult job in the country,” Pedrosa said. “Although the people have a right to know and can demand for this, it would be better if Noynoy himself were to release his medical history and any treatments/consultations that bear on his capacity to lead,” she said. He said Noynoy Aquino should “end speculations about his state of mental health.”

“His mental health has been the subject of continuous speculation…Noynoy has to voluntarily submit his medical history for public pe-

rusal, or if not available that he allow himself to be subjected to a psychiatric tests. That is the only way the issue can be put behind,”

Pedrosa said. She said because Noynoy does not want to release his medical history, people speculate that he has something to

hide. Noynoy should follow the example of Missouri Senator Eagleton’s who withdrew his candidacy in 1972 just 18 days

after his announcement as George McGovern’s running mate after his shock treatments for depression were known, Pedrosa said.

Villar, BSP P4.5B sweetheart deal bared
BANGKO Sentral ng Pilipinas should explain to the Filipino people why it allowed one of Nacionalista Party standard bearer Senator Manuel Villar Jr.’s companies to secure a P4.5-billion loan under highly irregular terms. In a press conference at Annabel’s in Quezon City, Liberal Party senatorial bet Risa Hontiveros said BSP should be held responsible for the loss it accumulated from Villar-owned Capital Bank’s loan in 1998 which amounted to P4.5 billion. BSP allowed Villar’s company to secure four loans without meeting the loan requirements. Hontiveros said, under Sec. 84 of Republic Act 7653 or the new Central Bank Act which Villar himself authored, BSP loans should be secured by "government securities to the extent of their applicable loan values and other encumbered first class collateral." She also said there were no securities made by the BSP and even its Monetary Board and some of the lots made as collateral were found to cover cliffs and timberland considered public domain. "These loans never reached the level of the Monetary Board," said Hontiveros, pointing out that under the law, all BSP loans should be approved by the Monetary Board. Lea Botones WITH practically 10 days to go before elections, Liberal Party and mayoralty bet and Quezon City vice mayor Herbert “Bistek” Bautista today said he expects more “fabricated stories” to come out against him without letup. “I expect these fabricated stories to continue even after elections. They never get tired of making up fantastic stories against me, and they will never stop until they see me crushed and broken,” Bautista said. According to Bautista, his political opponent who is known to employ “garbage politics” is already desperate and paid his way to spread lies and misinformation. “Kilala nyo naman kung sino ang nasa likod ng black propaganda. My political rival has already resorted to character assassination. Ang image na pinipinta nila sa akin ngayon ay kontrabida—lahat na yata ng kasamaan ipinupukol sa akin. I’m just amazed with their talent in writing scripts,” he said. Bautista disclosed that the lies com-

Mathay vows more ‘Eastwood Cities’ in QC
TO expand growth and generate more jobs, independent Quezon City mayoral candidate Mel Mathay, Jr. has disclosed plans of putting up more highly-developed areas like Eastwood City in Libis across different parts in Quezon City. Mathay said that the stretch of Mindanao Avenue has shown great potential as another commercial and business hub in the next few years. The former three-term Quezon City mayor explained that the construction of roads, which aim to connect Metro Manila to the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx), will generate more jobs and create business opportunities. “The construction that will connect Mindanao Avenue to NLEx (will) give Metro Manila access from North to South. The area is mostly occupied by factories that have been closed because they cannot compete with goods from China,” Mathay said. “That area can again be a business and commercial district that will provide jobs that can be a continuing development that will change the landscape. But it will take vision and leadership," he added.

DepEd orders removal of campaign posters from schools
DEPARTMENT of Education (DepEd) ordered the school heads to remove “now” the campaign posters that are around in school premises with barely two weeks before Election Day. “We need to maintain the integrity and neutrality of our schools and teachers in the coming elections,” Education Secretary Mona Valisno said adding “since the school is a polling place, no campaign materials must be posted or distributed outside school premises including grounds in front and areas around it such as walls, fences and sidewalks.” Valisno reminded all school heads of DepEd Order No. 10, s. 2010 that outlines the “Clean Schools, Clean Elections Campaign” of the government. She observed that schools were plastered with posters in anticipation of the deluge of voters on Election day. “We appeal to incumbent local officials, the police and concerned citizens to help us keep our schools free of campaign materials,” she added. “We are reminding our division superintendents and school heads to place the signage immediately and to remove all campaign posters, otherwise they will be subject to disciplinary action where applicable,” Valisno said. Valisno ordered monitoring teams be organized in every region which will report to the nearest DepEd Division or Regional Office. Marco Lorenzana

Melo fears PAL strike
COMMISSION on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Jose Melo yesterday expressed worry on the impending strike of the employees of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) since it may affect the delivery of ballots to different provinces in the country. “Pag inabutan tayo ng strike baka mapilitan tayo by sea, baka kulang din ang facilities nila,” Melo said Thursday. Melo’s statement came after PAL employees filed a strike notice due to airline’s plans to lay off 3,000 workers and outsource three of its non-core units by the end of May. He said he has already coordinated with the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) to intervene in the matter. “I asked DOLE to convince PAL people to do the strike after election,” he added. Palace oks shelving of parallel manual count
MALACAÑANG yesterday lauded the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for its decision on shelving the proposal for a parallel manual count in the May 10 elections. Presidential spokesperson Ricardo Saludo said with the Comelec’s decision not to do a parallel manual count, all efforts are now focused on getting automated counting to work. “ This will help ensure the expectations of 80 percent of Filipinos that automation will be easier and better,” he explained. Earlier, the Comelec rejected the proposals to hold a parallel manual count of votes for president, vice president and a local official. Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the poll body’s unanimous decision was it “cannot conduct a full parallel manual count.” He said the Comelec en banc believes a parallel manual count would resurrect old types of fraud in manual counting such as “dagdag-bawas,” and was no longer allowed under the poll automation law. Slump-proof industries can easily afford wage hike – Herrera
THE Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has dismissed as "totally unfair and unreasonable" the absolute claim of business groups that their members do not have enough money to pay for higher wages. "A number of industries continue to boom and grow profits. They can definitely afford to grant wage increases. And under the law, the upward revision of wage rates is possible along industry lines," said TUCP secretary-general and former Senator Ernesto Herrera. "Offhand, slump-proof industries such as electricity and water distribution can readily pay for higher wages," added Herrera, former chairman of the Senate committee on labor, employment and human resources development. He also said telecommunications, mining, banking, and even media and advertising could also manage a pay raise. He said telecommunications "is still being buoyed up by the surge in mobile telephony and broadband services, while mining as a whole has been enjoying years of bullish commodity prices."

Ayaw na niyang maglaro kay PBA coach and he wants a new team.

GM Antonio ready for 1 vs 600 for Guinness World Record
HE never tires of trying to establish new world records. For the nth time, 12-year National Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. will attempt to set a Guinness record by facing 600 chess opponents when the Pinoy Ironman: 1 vs 600 simultaneous chess exhibition gets underway on June 21 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila. Mahjoob of Iran set a record by facing 500 opponents and scoring 397 wins, 90 draws, 13 losses in 2009. Antonio is the 2009 blitz champ in the Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, finishing with 8.5 points in 9 games. “I’m ready,” said the Sta. Mesa, Manilaraised Antonio. “I will do my very best for the country’s honor,” added the former University of Manila (UM) stand-out. Mindoro journalist Noli Sangil Cruz of Touch of Gold Enterprises is very confident that the Calapan, Oriental Mindoro native GM will break the current record of the Iranian top chess wizard. “He needs to score at least 480 points to break the record. You have have 80-percent of your opponents’ points to get your feat recognized and break the mark,” said sportswriter/columnist Cruz. “Joey’s game is also built for this kind of event since he is a street fighter and he is in a peak condition because he has been jogging and exercising,” added Cruz, a former chess player from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. (PLM).

RP 1954 basketball team one for the ages
THE 1954 Philippine basketball team is one concrete proof experience could be blended with youth. With co-captains Caloy Loyzaga and Lauro Mumar bannering the six Olympians and as many outstanding players from the defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) and collegiate leagues, the squad wound up third in the World Championship in Rio de Janeiro. It remains as the highest finish ever by any Asian team in the tournament and a feat which could never be reprised by any RP cage team in the foreseeable future. For the team’s historic achievement it will be inducted, along with Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Ceferino Garcia, Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo, father-andson Jose “Cely” and Anthony Villanueva, Teofilo Yldefonso, Simeon Toribio and Miguel White, into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame on May 5 at the Maynilad Hall of the Manila Hotel. Also to be honored on his own is Loyzaga, who as a player was a fixture in any RP Team from 1951 up to 1963 and as coach from 1967 to 1968.

Lady Pirates oust Jaguars
LYCEUM played just good enough to oust University of San Jose-Recoletos, 25-17, 25-20, 2518, and tow Saint Benilde into the quarterfinal round of the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan yesterday. Thai import Porntip Santrong came back strong from a mediocre performance in the team’s straight-set loss to Ateneo last Tuesday, firing 16 hits while drawing solid backup from fellow guest player Dalhia Cruz and Joy Cases, who churned out 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Lady Pirates. Santrong had 10 digs and went 12-of-16 in reception as Lyceum, which finished sixth in the last conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and presented by PLDT MyDSL, finished the elims with a 3-1 slate. “The morale of the team was a bit low after the loss to Ateneo, so we tried to ease up the training to take their minds off the loss,” said Lyceum coach Emil Lontoc. USJ-R ended up with a 0-4 card and bowed out of the tournament organized by Sports Vision and backed by Accel, Mikasa and Mighty Bond. Lyceum’s win also enabled St. Benilde, which had a 1-3 mark, to advance to the next round.

Our Daily Bread
When a publishing company asked me to write an endorsement for a new book, I said I’d be glad to. It appeared to be a helpful effort directed to young people, challenging them to live for God in a changing world. But as I read the book, something troubled me. Although it had lots of Scripture and great spiritual advice, it didn’t explain that the starting point for any relationship with God is salvation through Jesus Christ. The writer seemed to imply that the essence of living spiritually in modern society is based totally on action—good deeds—and not on saving faith in Christ. I didn’t write the endorsement. The culture of the church is changing rapidly. Often left behind in the rush to find exciting new ideas is the essential nature of the gospel. The apostle Paul was astonished that people so readily embraced a “different gospel” (Gal. 1:6). What he preached was not from man, but a direct revelation from Jesus Himself (vv.1112). We must never let go of that true gospel: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again for our justification, declaring us righteous before God (Rom. 4:25; 1 Cor. 15:3-4). This alone offers the “power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Rom. 1:16). If we want to live for God, this is the only place to start. — Dave Branon No one can say he doesn’t need Forgiveness for his sin, For all must come to Christ by faith To have new life within. —Branon Faith is the hand that must take God’s gift of salvation.
