A breath of fresh air, sabi nga. Watch out for this lady lawyer – Leila De Lima – she will go places at alam kong magiging kahanga-hanga siyang public servant. Mag-text po kayo sa akin tungkol sa usaping ito sa mga numerong: globe – 09272630741 o smart – 09215186724 O kaya ay email sa: [email protected]. Versoza explained. Meanwhile, Leachon said they decided to launch the program to highlight the role of Filipino doctors who are willing to actively participate in environmental protection. “We have to encourage the Filipino people to support efforts to reduce wastes, heighten social awareness to love the environment,” Leachon said, explaining that severe climate change is one of the most serious environmental challenges facing the world today. Leachon said they expect the project with the PNP to create greater social awareness for the public to care for the environment. Soon, Leachon said they would also include tree planting as part of the school curriculum in elementary and high school as provided for under Proclamation 396 declaring June 25 as Arbor Day.

Verzosa fights ‘spoilers’ of environment
PHILIPPINE National Police Chief Director General Jesus A. Versoza has ordered a crackdown on ‘spoilers’ of the environment as he underscored the need for the citizenry to be empowered in sharing with both the national and local governments the responsibility to protect the environment. Versoza made the remarks as the PNP signed a memorandum of agreement with the University of Sto. Tomas Medical Association headed by USTMAA 1985 Medicine Batch/Class led by its president and top cardiologist Anthony Leachon. Leachon is also the regent coordinator for advocacy and media relations of the Philippine College of Physicians. Versoza was represented by PNP officials led by 1980 Medicine batch alumnus Brig. General Francis Altarejos, PNP Director for Health Services and General Nicanor Bartolome of the PNP Police Community Relations Group (PNP-PCRG) Versoza stressed that policemen must always be protectors of the people and nature, noting that the PNP’s “Pulis Makakalikasan Program” has been in place to heighten pub-

The Pulis Makakalikasan Program encourages all policemen to plant trees and protect the remaining natural resources in their respective areas of jurisdictions. Versoza reiterated that the police leadership will take the lead in enforcing environmental ordinances. “We, your police, do not only protect the public but our environment as well.” The Pulis Makakalikasan and Scubasurero projects are two of the most successful programs of the PNP in environmental protection. These projects involve massive tree planting and clean-up of seas. “Through the years, the police’s role has taken on new dimensions. The PNP has become not only the keeper of peace but also an advocate for a greener environment,"

GMA: Get Maguindanao witness killers
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday ordered police and the military to arrest the killers of the key witness in the gruesome Maguindanao massacre last year. Deputy presidential spokesperson Prof. Gary Olivar said the Palace is ‘outraged’ by the latest development in the case against the Ampatuan clan. “We have directed our security forces to take all necessary measures to apprehend the perpetrators, utilizing all the special powers available under the state of emergency that the president declared and continues to maintain in the province.” Olivar said. It will be recalled that the President gave her nod to the retention of the state of emergency in Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato upon the recommendation of the defense officials and the DILG in the wake of the persistent threats of private armed groups in the region. Olivar reacted to reports that key witness, Suwaib Upham, in the trial of the Ampatuans has been shot dead. Upham admitted to have taken part in the killing of 57 people, including 31 journalists on November 23, 2009. He claimed that his former employers, the Ampatuans, planned the brutal killings. Lawyer Harry Roque, on the other hand, said the killing of Upham last week in Maguindanao could potentially weaken the case against the Ampatuan family. Upham’s death comes two months after an uncle of another witness was also shot and killed, reportedly to silence and cow those who would speak out against the accused. Meanwhile, the Department of Justice said they still have to validate and crossexamine the testimonies of a supposed new witness, who is claiming he has inside information on the massacre of 57 people in Maguindanao province last y e a r. Assistant Chief State Prosecutor Richard Fadullon said the DoJ could not immediately take and use someone as witness as there is a need for validation to determine his knowledge about the crime and his motives. Rebel leader and his two men fall
A JOINT police and military checkpoint has netted a communist rebel leader and his two men in Guagua, Pampanga Wednesday night. Brig. Gen. Jose Mabanta, commander of the Army’s 703rd Brigade, identified the arrested communist leader as Romeo Dianela Nunez, alias “Nelson,” of the Marxist-Leninist Party of the Philippines-Rebolusyonaryong Hukbong Bayan. The MLPP-RHB is a faction of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army that split in the 90s. Mabanta said Nunez is the head of the political department and the concurrent commanding officer of the Area Party Committee of the MLPP-RHB in Pampanga. Ronnie Santos

Palace orders Cabinet execs to secure release of Yusoph son
OUTGOING President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno and Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales to secure the safe and immediate release of Commission on Elections Commissioner Elias Yusoph’s son, Naraldin, 22, who was abducted last Sunday night. Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said Arroyo gave the orders to Puno and Gonzales during a Cabinet meeting in Malacañang as she cited the urgency of the case since it involves "the son of a very high-ranking Comelec official who is actually supervising the partial elections in Lanao province.” Armed men took the younger Yusoph while visiting a mosque in Bgy. Dansalang, Marawi City on Sunday around 7:30 p.m. The kidnappers, who later kept in touch with the Comelec commissioner, demanded the nullification of election results in the towns of Malabang, Pilong, Taraka, and Masiu in exchange for his son’s release. Philippine National Police’s special task force on kidnapping and police forces in Mindanao are working together to bring the kidnappers to justice. Alex Balcoba

Pimentel advises Kris to focus on fixing her marriage
SENATE Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. advised controversial movie actress-host Kris Aquino-Yap, sister of President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to focus on fixing her marriage instead of meddling into Senate affairs. Pimentel said the report that Aquino’s youngest sister is working behind scenes to install Sen. Francis Pangilinan as the next Senate President has been denied but Aquino-Yap is reportedly now in the throes of a marriage problem. “It might be better to concentrate on her problem rather than dab into political matters," Pimentel said. He was referring to reports that Kris and her husband, basketball player James Yap, were having marital problems. Kris had denied reports that she called up Senators Jinggoy Ejercito Estrada, Lito Lapid, Ramon "Bong" Revilla, and Juan Miguel Zubiri to rally behind Pangilinan instead of fellow Liberal Sen. Frank Drilon who is also eyeing the Senate presidency. Nacionalista Party president, Sen.Manuel Villar, Jr. also wanted to become Senate head for the second time. Andres Garcia

The leg
Most fans moved on from grieving to reminiscing on Jackson’s memories—fond memories to be exact. Erin Jacobs once traded her brand new bicycle for tickets to see Michael Jackson. Now, more than 25 years later, it's her time, organizational skills and gas money that she's giving to the King of Pop. As an organizer of two major fan groups, Jacobs is just one of thousands of supporters keeping Jackson's legacy alive — along with the pursuit of justice for his untimely death a year ago today. Since then, the singer's notoriously loyal followers have traded vigils at the hospital and family home for pilgrimages to his tomb and protests at the courthouse where the doctor charged with killing Jackson will be tried. “It's absolutely humbling that he has so much support from fans,” Jacobs said in a recent interview. A travel agent who lives in Yorba Linda, California, Jacobs made her first 50-mile (80- kilometer) trip to the Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, shortly after Jackson was buried there in September. It was a personal trip. These days, Jacobs has gone on to coordinate monthly pilgrimages to the cemetery by the Official Michael Jackson Fans of Southern California. Hundreds are expected at Forest Lawn on the date Jackson passed away to commemorate Jackson's death. The singer ’s tomb inside the cemetery’s gothic Great Mausoleum remains closed to the public, and Friday's memorial won't change that. But through the efforts of Jacobs and others, it's become a place where Jackson’s international fan base comes to grieve. Many who can't make it in person send letters, poems, artwork and other gifts so that Jacobs and others can deliver them to the cemetery, where they are placed at the singer's tomb until new items arrive. “A year later, it feels like it was yesterday,” Jacobs said. Another focal point for Jackson fans has become the downtown Los Angeles courthouse where Dr. Conrad Murray will

be tried on an involuntary manslaughter charge for Jackson’s death. On hearing days, fans wearing sequined gloves and T-shirts calling for justice wait for hours clutching signs denouncing Murray and shout at him for the brief moments it takes him to walk from the curb to the front door. Johnell Johnson, 19, an actress from Fontana, California, woke up at 4:30 a.m. to get to the courthouse in time for a recent midday hearing in Murray's case. Wearing a vintage pin from Jackson’s “Bad” era, Johnson said it was important for her to be there to support Jackson’s family. It's a sentiment echoed by many others who try to attend the proceedings. Only a handful of people are allowed into the courtroom, but others are content to shout their support to Jackson's parents and siblings, who occasionally stop to hug or speak to fans. At the hearing earlier this month, the singer's mother, Katherine, carried roses that fans handed her. Fans at the cemetery Friday hope to bring more than 3,000 roses, Jacobs said, although officials don't want the memorial to include the release of doves or balloons, as was originally planned. None of this fan passion is really new. Jackson's supporters have long been among the most devoted and vocal of any entertainer's in recent memory. More than 1,200 people were outside the Santa Maria, California, courthouse in 2005 when the singer was acquitted of all counts in a child-molestation trial. Last year thousands flocked to the hospital where Jackson was pro-

nounced dead, and throngs remained outside the family's home for weeks. Friday's anniversary is ostensibly a fan affair — the singer's estate, which controls Jackson's music and likeness — has not sanctioned any events, and while some family members have thrown support behind a paid gala in Beverly Hills, California, on Saturday night, there hasn't been a formal family announcement of tribute. Several of those who protested outside the courthouse June 14 were planning a variety of events, from the staging of a massive “Thriller” tribute to a rally seeking justice planned for downtown Los

Angeles on June 26. Taaj Malik, who is organizing the rally and maintains several fan groups on Facebook, was among the first fans to arrive outside the singer”s rented mansion when news of his hospitalization broke. She recalled recently that she had tears in her eyes as she traveled the 50 miles from neighboring Orange County. A Jackson fan since her childhood in Britain, Malik said she prefers to focus on gaining justice for Jackson than on her grief. “I've ignored it,” said Malik, who along with Jacobs is a member of the group Justice 4 MJ. “I've blocked it. I refuse to let it come in to me.”

New Jackson video game
MICHAEL JACKSON fans will be able to moonwalk next to the King of Pop in a new video game to be released this holiday season by Ubisoft Entertainment. The as-yet-unnamed game will be among the first to use new motion-detecting camera systems to be available later this year for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. The announcement was made Monday at the E3 video game show in Los Angeles. The game will also work with hand-held controllers on Nintendo's Wii and on the smaller Nintendo DS and PSP portable console from Sony. *** Michael Jackson had dozens of hits, but his most popular one wasn't a solo smash or a tune with his brothers. It was a song with another icon. Billboard says “Say Say Say,” his 1983 hit with Paul McCartney, is the most popular Jackson song. That was followed by “Billie Jean,” the Jackson 5’s “I'll Be There,” “Beat It” and “Rock with You.” “Billie Jean” was at No. 1 for seven weeks, while “Say Say Say” held the top spot for six weeks. But the McCartneyJackson hit stayed in the top 10 longer.

What to do when ‘kuto’ epidemic hits your child’s school
IT happens like clockwork. Every year, kids and parents don’t just have to contend with the stress of school opening, they also have to brace themselves for an infestation of the most embarrassing kind— head lice. Often, exposure to school activities and the increased interaction with classmates raise the likelihood of Pediculosis or head lice infestation. In fact, a research study conducted in 2006 by the global research firm GfK NOP revealed that 59 percent of Philippine households suffer from head lice. While 34 percent of elementary school children in public schools are infected, Mrs. Zeny Soriano, Research & Development Consultant of Lamoiyan Corp., makers of Hapee Toothpaste and Licealiz Shampoo, says that “incidents of head lice in suspicion are as bad as when we go to public schools.” She warns, “Everybody is susceptible regardless of age and socioeconomic class.” The best way to prevent “kuto” from spreading is to teach kids the basics of good grooming and hygiene. Children will learn to be cautious in sharing their personal items, like combs, brushes, headbands, hairclips, pony ties, caps and towels, with their classmates if they’re taught to do the same at home. Kids learn by example so it’s best if they see Mom, Dad, “Ate” or “Kuya” using their own brushes and towels. Teach them to be extra cautious in sharing personal grooming items as they are the easiest way for bacteria and other harmful externalities to spread. If possible, keep your children’s hair short. If not, tie their hair neatly in a bun, ponytail or pigtails. During P.E. or recess in school, they will have less hair flying around when they play with their schoolmates. This will reduce the likelihood of your child to be infested by head lice. When you see your child frequently scratching his or her head, immediately check for lice or lice eggs, also called nits or “lisa.” Lice are wingless, typically flatbodied insects with segmented antennae, modified mouth parts, and has six short legs with claws. These claws pierce the skin. The mouth parts suck the blood while secreting saliva, which intensifies itching. Nits or “lisa,” on the other hand are attached to human hair through specialized saliva. Nits are typically pale or white in color; if the nit appears brown, it is dead. At the first sign of nits or kuto on your child’s hair, immediately apply a headlice treatment shampoo; preferably one made from natural ingredients. Lamoiyan’s Licealiz Shampoo contains the active ingredient Pyrethrin; naturally derived from Chrysanthemum flower extracts. Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine Dermatological Society sources endorse Pyrethin as safe and reliable in removing head-lice and their eggs. In prescribed doses, the Pyrethin-formulated Licealiz Shampoo is safe and effective even for use of children as young as six years. It is applied on the hair like a regular shampoo. For best results leave it on the hair for ten minutes before rinsing. If your kids have head lice, the recommended application is twice a week for two weeks. To prevent head lice from reoccurring, simply use it once a week. Unlike other head lice treatment shampoos, Licealiz contains a hair conditioning formulation that keeps hair soft and healthy after use. Licealiz has also been made more affordable. It is priced up to 50 percent lower than other brands to ensure you can continue with the preventive followup treatment. It is also available in more convenient and even more affordable 10ml sachets.

Globe & Mobily launch 1st Kababayan SIM for OFWs in Saudi
OVERSEAS Filipino Workers (OFWs) can expect to pay lower rates for calls and text messages to family and friends in the Philippines on the back of the recently-inked partnership between Globe Telecom and Saudi Arabia-based mobile operator Mobily. Mobily is Saudi Arabia’s second largest mobile operator with a market share of about 40%. It is the brand carried by Saudi telecom firm Etihad Etisalat. Mobily partnered with Globe to launch the Mabuhay Kababayan Prepaid SIM, a new service that gives Mobily subscribers special rates for calls and text messages to the Philippines. With the Mobily Mabuhay Kababayan Prepaid SIM, calls to the Philippines will be charged 99 halala (0.99 Saudi Riyal or about P12.01) per minute, and 30 halala (0.30 Saudi Riyal or about P3.66) per text message. “We value the hard work and sacrifices of our OFWs and we know how important it is for them to stay in touch with the loved-ones back in the Philippines,” said Kimmie Moreno, Marketing Head for Overseas Filipino Communities (International) at Globe, “Our partnership with Mobily allows our kabababayans in Saudi to keep in touch with friends and family at reduced rates, giving them more time to talk and bond with loved-ones back home.” There is an estimated 1.1-Million Filipinos living and working in Saudi Arabia, of which about 320,000 are existing Mobily subscribers.

Metro traffic accidents down by 18 percent
THE number of traffic accidents in Metro Manila has gone down significantly during the first five months of the year, according to the Road Safety Unit (RSU) of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). Reports generated by the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS) showed a decrease of almost 18 percent in the number of road accidents for the period January to May. This year the recorded accidents were 20,151 compared to last year’s 24,417. Motorcyclerelated traffic accidents have the highest rate. As with the case last year, most of the accidents happened in Quezon City followed by Manila . Pateros posted the least number of accidents. The figures can be attributed to several factors. Quezon City has the biggest land area in Metro Manila and three out of the seven major roads such as Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), Commonwealth Avenue , and Quezon Avenue are located within the city. It is also considered as one of the central business districts with high social and economic activities.

Teachers seek Valisno’s help on census pay
THE Action and Solidarity for Empowerment of Teachers (ASERT) has asked Education Secretary Mona Valisno to give them definite date as to when they would receive their honoraria on the recently concluded national census. The group claimed that each teacher who helped conduct the census, which ended last June 11, should get P11,500 but it seemed they are barking at the wrong tree. The Department of Education (DepEd) said the teachers who participated in the last census should bring up their concern to the National Statistics Office (NSO) since it was the agency that contracted them for the census and are likewise responsible for releasing their compensation. But DepEd Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya has assured the group that Valisno would be very much willing to assist them given the limited time remaining for her stay at the agency. It was learned that De La Salle University president Armin Luistro, who accepted President-elect Benigno Aquino III's invitation for him to join the new administration, is set to take over the DepEd leadership. Malaya assured the complaining teachers could have an audience with DepEd officials in the next few days. He reminded the teachers to bring documents to prove that their pay had yet to arrive as several reports disclosed that the delayed payments happen only in a “case-to-case basis.” Marco Lorenzana

GMA administration nets P2.2 B savings for gov’t coffer
PRESIDENT Gloria MacapagalArroyo’s program of streamlining the bureaucracy to make it lean and efficient has netted a total of P2.234 billion in savings for the government coffers. This was the revelation made by budget undersecretary Laura Pascua during a Palace briefing yesterday citing the implementation of Executive Order (EO 366) or rationalization of government agencies as among the biggest factor in the government savings. Pascua said the approval of the rationalization plan of 76 government agencies resulted in the abolition of 11,256 positions of which 5,930 were funded positions. According to the budget official, 94 more rationalization plans of departments, agencies or governmentowned and -controlled corporations are still being evaluated by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). She stressed that the government has paid P1.2 billion in benefits and incentives saying benefits paid were “recouped within the year.” Pascua expressed hopes that the Aquino administration would continue implementing the rationalization program. EO 366, entitled "Directing a Strategic Review of the Operations and Organizations of Executive Branch and Providing Options and Incentives for Government Employees Who May Be Affected by the Rationalization of the Functions and Agencies of the Executive Branch," aims to promote effectiveness, efficiency, affordability and transparency in government service. PNP Chief Dir. Gen. Jesus Verzosa has approved an elaborate security and public safety plans for the inaugural ceremony of Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III as the 15th Philippine president on June 30. The center of activities will be at the Quirino grandstand where President-elect Aquino will take his oath of office before Supreme Court Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales The PNP has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) declaring the airspace over Quirino grandstand as a No Fly Zone for the duration of the inaugural ceremony, except for television helicopters that were given special permission to take aerial footages. A Notice to mariners will also be issued for seacraft in Manila Bay along the shoreline of the Quirino Grandstand and Ocean Park area. Chief Supt. Rodolfo Magtibay, Manila police chief, said the stretch of Roxas Blvd. from Quirino Avenue to Anda Circle, as well as P. Burgos and T.M. Kalaw Streets will be closed to vehicular traffic effective 7 a.m. on June 30. At the Quezon Memorial Circle, the PNP will field security personnel to ensure public order and safety as thousands are expected to attend President Aquino's victory party starting at 4 p.m. Chief Supt. Benjardi Mantele, Quezon City police chief, said the entire stretch of Elliptical Road will remain open to vehicular traffic but vehicle access to the Quezon Memorial Circle will be limited due to available space. Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina, PNP spokesman, said the PNP will put up Police Assistance Centers in both venues at the Quirino Grandstand and Quezon Memorial Circle. Maricel Cruz

B-MEG clips Ginebra Kings
B-MEG Derby Ace stayed on a hot streak and in strong contention for an outright entry in the PBA Fiesta Conference Final Four following the demolition of the crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra Kings. The Derby Ace import outplayed his Barangay Ginebra counterpart as the Llamados whipped the Kings, 101-83, Wednesday to catch up with the San Miguel Beermen at second place with three play dates left in the double-round elimination phase. Cliff came through with 24 points, 16 rebounds, five assists and two blocks, and got the needed support from his teammates as they notched a fifth straight win and drew level with the Beermen at 12-5. Before a good Wednesday crowd at the Araneta Coliseum, Purefoods showed up Ginebra, foiling the Kings’ third shot at an outright seat in the quarterfinal round.

2010 MVP Invitational C’ships start
THE kick off ceremony for the 2010 Smart-Philippines Invitational Challenge was launched Wednesday at the Traders Hotel along Roxas Blvd. where the teams of Jordan and Donguan New Century are billeted for the four-day tournament that started yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The short joust is also known as the 2010 Manny V. Pangilinan Invitational Championships from June 24 to 27 The FIBA World Championship-bound squads of Jordan and China arrived in the wee hours of Wednesday for the event and appeared a little tired and sleepy. The two teams will join PBA crowd darlings Barangay Ginebra Kings and the current No. 1 ranked Talk 'N Text, aside from the Smart-Gilas nationals for the pocket competition. Jordan will parade a world-rated coach in Mario Palma with two naturalized American guard Rasheim Wright, Sam Daghas and Zaid on their way to their first-ever trip to the World Championships in August. On the other hand, Donguan is being handled by former national Australian coach Brian Goorjan. The team has a 7'3" center who is only 17 years old and another 7'1' youngster. Both boys are being groomed to become members of the national Chinese squad in the next few years. The Philippines' Smart-Gilas captained by the popular TV host Chris Tiu has brought in 6'10" American reinforcement Marcus Douthit, has earned much respect internationally despite the Filipinos' height handicap which they makeup with their natural skills and talent and speed.

PBA living legend Jawo is top bet for PSC chair
ROBERT “SONNY” JAWORSKI, known as Philippine basketball’s “the living legend,” looms as top candidate for the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman post. “The President wants someone who can forge a harmonious relationship with the Philippine Olympic Committee. And he thinks Jaworski is the man,” said the source. “What more can you ask for? Jaworski at the PSC and Cojuangco at the POC being in-laws,” said the source. “Of course, there will be differences in opinions. But this relationship between the two gentlemen would go along the President’s wish,” he added. Last week, former Manila representative and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping submitted his courtesy resignation to President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino. Angping urged Aquino to appoint immediately the new head of the government sports agency because there will be only four months left before the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. He said that the November date of the quadrennial Asian event makes the assumption of the new chairman of the PSC very urgent. “There is little time left before the Asian Games. So in my resignation, I included an appeal for the Presidentelect Noynoy Aquino to appoint immediately the new head of the PSC,” Angping said.

Our Daily Bread
The film Miracle tells the true story of the 1980 US Olympic ice hockey team as it marches to an improbable gold medal. At the outset of the story, coach Herb Brooks is shown selecting the players for his team. When he gives assistant coach Craig Patrick a list of names he has chosen, Craig says in surprise, “You’re missing some of the best players.” Brooks responds, “I’m not looking for the best players, Craig—just the right ones.” Brooks knew that individual talent would take the team only so far. A willingness to fit into his style of selfless play would be far more important than talent. Clearly, team success, not individual glory, was the priority. The biblical call to service has a similar emphasis. In God’s purposes, each believer does his or her part, but the results are team-oriented. After explaining the wide differences in the spiritual gifts of believers, Paul says, “the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all” (1 Cor. 12:7). When we use the skills God gives us, His purposes are accomplished, and He gets the glory. In God’s service, it’s not about being the best, the most talented, or the most gifted. It’s about being the right people—the ones God “set . . . in the body” (v.18)—joining together to serve the same team. Christ builds His church with different stones And makes each one secure; All shapes and sizes fit in place To make His church endure. —Anon. There are no unimportant people in the body of Christ.
