A ‘major, major’ humiliation
A “major, major” humiliation An unprepared police force, an illequipped “elite” unit, a rescue mission gone awry. I’d take the liberty of borrowing the words of Miss Universe 4th runner-up Venus Raj in describing the hostage drama on Tuesday in Manila that ended in a bloodbath: “It was a “major, major” humiliation.” For a capital city, it was shameful for the all the world to see how incompetent Manila’s police force was in handling an initially peaceful hostage-taking incident. Shameful, in fact, would be an understatement because we all saw how unprepared the special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team was in storming the Hong Thai Transport bus in an attempt to rescue the hostages, or whoever was left of them. But they came too late. There was nothing special about the SWAT team, especially when they lobbed the tear gas canister without anyone of the storm troopers wearing a gas mask. The attack was hasty. In fact, we even saw how difficult it was for them to hammer down the bus windows and windshield. The hostage-taker was the one on top of the situation. Authorities should have taken him down much earlier. Also, it was shameful to see how a uniformed police officer took hostage people from a foreign land who had nothing in mind but to savor the beauty of our dear country and experience Filipino hospitality. What could have been their most memorable trip turned out to be their last bus ride alive. Sr. Insp. Rolando Mendoza served as their tour guide to death. No one but the police should be blamed for what happened. Obviously, the authorities were not prepared to handle such a situation. Imagine if it was a major terrorist attack. Oh! Dear. The police failed to control the crowd, nobody was in charge to manage the crisis. There was no expert negotiator to deal with the suspect. Adding fuel to the fire was the brother of the suspect, policeman Gregorio Mendoza, who stole the scene by acting as if he was being arrested for being an “accessory” to the crime. He had no business being there. The police was right in trying to keep him away from the scene because blood, certainly, is thicker than water. To my eyes, Gregorio’s “performance” infuriated his brother. Gregorio’s 15 minutes of fame resulted to a lifelong nightmare for the country’s tourism industry and caused another big blot in the already hideous image of the PNP.

He assured that the government is already correcting the deficiencies in the implementation of operating procedures during a crisis situation. “none of us wanted this outcome and we’d like to emphasize the fact that the primary consideration was to secure all of the hostages,” the President said.

P.noy declares Aug. 25 day of national mourning
President Aquino has declared August 25 as a day of national mourning in the wake of a bloody hostagetaking incident at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila. Under Proclamation no. 23, Aquino said the deaths of eight civilians “are a great loss to the peoples of Hongkong and the Philippines .” He added that there is a need to answer “a call for the most solemn commemoration and respect at a time of grief for our two peoples.” the Hongkong government earlier declared a day of mourning to express sorrow over the deaths. “i instruct all the public institutions in the Philippines and our embassies and consulates overseas to lower the Philippine flag to half-mast on August 25, 2010,” the President said. A copy of the proclamation was posted on tuesday at the official government website, gov.ph. in a statement issued Monday night by the Palace, Aquino offered his deepest condolences to the families of the hostage victims and the Chinese and Hongkong governments. “i have tasked secretaries dinky soliman and Alberto Lim to provide everything necessary for the recovery and return home of the survivors. i have directed the fullest cooperation with the Hongkong authorities on the part of our officials,” he added.

MPD director goes on leave, SWAT chief, 3 others relieved
MAniLA Police district director Chief supt. rodolfo Magtibay went on leave yesterday while the special Weapons and tactics team (sWAt) chief and three others were relieved from their posts pending investigation into the bloody hostage crisis that claimed the lives of eight Hongkong tourists. Magtibay said he is ready to accept full responsibility over the deadly hostage crisis. Meanwhile, the team leader who tried to rescue the hostages, Chief insp. santiago Pascual iii, chief of the MPd-special Weapons and tactics team (sWAt) along with sPO4 reynaldo Antonio and sPOs2 Antonio Gaming and Bernardo espinosa were relieved from their posts. On the other hand, National Capital Region Police Office chief dir. Leocadio santiago, Jr. said he will not resign but will abide by the result of the ongoing investigation on the case. this was his response to the clamor from the public of his ouster not only of Magtibay but also nCrPO chief and Philippine national Police chief dir. Gen. Jesus Verzosa. this developed as House Minority Leader edcel Lagman sought for the resignation of three Cabinet members - interior secretary Jesse robredo and secretaries ricky Carandang and Herminio Coloma. Lagman said the three should all resign because their “palpable incompetence and culpable indifference" allegedly contributed to the mishandling of the hostage crisis where nine people died — eight Hongkong tourists and the hostage taker, dismissed policeman rolando Mendoza. “if they will not resign voluntarily, Pres. Aquino should fire them “for palpable incompetence and culpable indifference and for being unmindful of the adverse effects of the hostage crisis, if not properly addressed and solved, to the economy, tourism and overseas employment,” the lawmaker stressed. the lawmaker said robredo exercises jurisdiction over the Philippine national Police “whose ground commanders and special Weapons and tactics elements bungled the negotiations and rescue operations resulting in the death of eight tourists from Hong Kong .”

Pangilinan opposes reimposition of death penalty
senAtOr Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan has opposed the reimposition of the death penalty to deter the commission of heinous crimes amid Monday's bloody hostage-taking drama at the Quirino Grandstand, where eight tourists were killed by a dismissed police officer. the hostage-taker, dismissed senior insp. rolando Mendoza, was later killed by a police sniper ending the hostage crisis that lasted for nearly 12 hours after the former hijacked a busload of tourists. “it is swift punishment and the immediate disposition of cases pending before our courts, regardless of the penalties involved, and not the reimposition of the death penalty, that will restore respect for the rule of law in our country,” Pangilinan said. He also said that it has been said time and time again that it is not the severity of punishment, but the certainty of punishment, that will make people think twice before committing criminal acts.

Padilla.

House wants ‘FPJ Avenue’ in Quezon City
“Ironically, it was in the same studio where he suffered a stroke leading to his death on December 14, 2004," paliwanag sa panukala. “From the 1950’s, the steadfast roles Poe played in Philippine films won him great respect and admiration. Poe was dubbed as Da King of Philippine movies because of his box office hits," nakasaad sa HB 2393.

‘Buhawi:’ Joining ‘Survivor’ is a dream come true

PNP chief hands-on in probe of botched hostage rescue
PNP Chief, Director General Jesus Verzosa is personally heading the Post Critical Incident Management Committee (PCIMC) that will look deeply into Monday’s hostage-taking incident in Manila that left eight hostages dead. Verzosa said “the unfortunate outcome of the hostage drama in Manila warrants a full-dress investigation to establish all circumstances surrounding the incident, and to determine whether or not there were lapses on the part of the concerned police unit and crisis committee authorities in addressing the situation.” “We offer our deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased even as we extend a helping hand to the wounded victims and other survivors of this ordeal. But at this point, we do not want to pass sweeping judgment or make early conclusions except to say that our intention to peacefully end this hostage drama was spoiled when the hostage-taker suddenly exhibited violent behavior and began shooting the hostages,” Verzosa said. Verzosa ordered the Chief of Directorial Staff to organize the PCIMC directly under the Chief PNP and supervised by Deputy Chief for Operations (TDCO), Deputy Director General Raul M Bacalzo. The PCIMC is composed of Directorial Staff Offices tasked to perform different functions and aspects of investigation of the fact-finding body. These Directorial Staff Offices will be supported by lower PNP units. The Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM ) under Chief Supt Arturo Cacdac will handle all criminal, administrative and human rights aspects of investigation. The Directorate for Intelligence under Police Director Raul Castañeda is tak to conduct background investigation and profiling of suspects, including foreign liaisoning with counterpart police agencies. The Directorate for Police Community Relations (DPCR) under Police Director Renato Heredia will head the PCR and Media Relations arm of the PCIMC to liaison and provide assistance to victims’ families, and conduct a review of existing media public relations policy in critical situations.

For the past 40 years, Uratex has been providing comfortable and peaceful sleep to discriminating consumers, while its elegant designs have made its products must-have items in many homes. Multiflex RNC Philippines Inc., which makes Uratex, has invested on top-of-the-line equipment to produce mattresses that are up to world-class standards, while raising the bar in terms of quality foam production in the Philippines. It is now one of the leading foam producers in Southeast Asia, with products that are comparable to the best in the world. All Uratex foam blocks are produced using processes that rival the best in the United States and Europe. It utilizes the computerized Vertifoam process to form perfectly shaped foam. The work doesn’t end there. Each block of form is cured through a cooling and drying process that ensures durability. With optimum storage conditions and special equipment for customized cutting according to specifications, consumers are assured of a top-quality product. And since it is made in the Philippines, it has a more reasonable cost than imported foam products. Just recently, Multiflex invested on a German Hennecke foaming equipment to improve its foam production consistent with its vision for quality. With the call for a green workplace, efforts have been made to significantly reduce foam waste, which may affect the environment. The secret to the success of Uratex is based on an uncompromising commitment to product quality and investment, sound financial management, and people skills that encouraged its staff to help innovate on its different foam products. These have helped the Uratex brand become synonymous with

British Embassy not advising against travel to RP
THE British Government is not advising its citizens against traveling to the Philippines, in the aftermath of the hostage-taking of Hong Kong tourists on Monday. Eight Hong Kong Chinese on a travel pack plus the Filipino hostage–taker died in a botched effort of the Philippine police to rescue them. A few of their compatriots were seriously injured. “In response to the incident, the British Government has not upgraded the level of our advice and we are not advising against travel to the Philippines,” the British embassy in Manila said on Wednesday even as Ambassador to the Philippines Stephen Lillie “expressed shock and sadness” over the incident and sent condolences to the families of the innocent victims. But the embassy said it has included a factual reference to the incident, which occurred at the iconic Luneta Park in Manila, in its travel advice. “This is standard practice for events of this type,” it said.

Our Daily Bread
We know we’re getting older when we say things like, “Can you believe how young those professional baseball players are?” And it’s a sure sign of aging when we no longer ask, “How are you?” but say, “Hey, you look terrific”—as if we’re surprised. Aging is inevitable. Unfortunately, society has taught us to fear advancing age and to disguise its reality as much as possible. But aging can actually be a wonderful thing. Followers of Jesus have the capacity to get significantly better with age. As Paul put it: “Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day” (2 Cor. 4:16). Just as there are physical signs that reveal we’re getting older, there are signs that show we are getting better. Rather than becoming more crotchety, intolerant, and unloving, the maturing follower of Jesus grows better at forgiving, loving, and caring. Growing older is a continuation of the journey to become more like Jesus, which means that as time goes on our heart and attitudes should increasingly resonate with and reflect the compelling character and winsome ways of our Savior. So as we grow older, let’s embrace the opportunity to become spiritually more like Jesus. Our friends will notice that we look better with age. The seeds of aging sprout in youth, As weeds or grain they’re sure to grow; But if we sow with love and truth, A golden harvest we can know. —D. De Haan

Pagasa eyes twin LPAs
THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the agency has been monitoring two low-pressure areas (LPAs) that may develop into cyclones and hit the country successively. The state weather bureau said the LPAs may come one after the other. Should they become cyclones, they will be codenamed “Florita” and “Glenda.” The two LPAs are still at sea gathering strength. They may affect Aurora and parts of Central Luzon. But they may change course and affect Northern Luzon. As of 5a.m., the first LPA was estimated at 430 kms east of Central Luzon while the second was estimated at 1,030 kms east of Central Luzon.

Bishop calls for a thorough investigation of the hostage taking incident
THE president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) hopes that the bloody hostage incident happened last Monday will not be used against the Filipino people. “I hope the international community will not put this against the Filipino,” Bishop Nereo Odchimar said in an interview over Radio Veritas 846. The Tandag prelate also said that he continues to pray for the victims and their families for them to have strength in facing the tragedy that happened to them. “We ask the lord of peace, specially the heart of the people the spirit of peace and brotherhood that will lead justice to everyone,” he said. Meanwhile, two bishops expressed support on the plan of the Aquino government to investigate the hostage drama that killed nine people including the hostage taker, retired police Rolando Mendoza. Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez said a thorough probe should be conducted particularly on the lapses in the rescue attempt of the hostages. “The sad outcome clearly points to the lapses. There should be an investigation so it will be corrected and improved,” he said. Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo also echoed Iniguez’s statement, saying that,“There should be a comprehensive investigation on the incident.” On Tuesday, the authorities admitted that there were errors in the handling of the Quirino Grandstand hostage drama involving Mendoza and a tourist bus carrying at least 25 people.

Scientists see smallest planet outside solar system
SCIENTISTS say they have identified a sun-like star with as many as seven different planets — including one that might be the smallest ever found outside the solar system. If confirmed, the planetary system around HD 10180, a star more than 100 light years away, would be the richest ever discovered. One astronomer says it is part of a growing body of evidence that the universe is full of planets — and that a bunch of them could be similar to our own. "The really nice thing about finding systems like this is that it shows that there are many more out there," said Alan Boss, of the Washington-based Carnegie Institution for Science, who was not involved with the find. "Mother Nature really had fun making planets." Although most of the planets identified are large — about 13 to 25 times the mass of our home — those behind the discovery, announced Tuesday at an international conference in France, say they are nearly certain they have identified one only 1.4 times the size of Earth. That would be the smallest planet ever spotted outside of those which orbit our own sun. Scientists have been spotting planets beyond our solar system for the past 15-odd years, and they've now catalogued some 450. But most finds have been limited to one or two or three planets, usually gargantuan balls of gas similar to Jupiter or Saturn.

Wala siyang kamalay-malay.

RP Patriots still team to beat in ABL Season 2
THE defending champion Philippine Patriots is once again the team to beat in the second season of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) which unreels on October 2 in Thailand. Powered by imports Jason Dixon, Gabe Freeman, Elmer Espiritu, Ateneo’s Nonoy Baclao, Val Acuna and Rob Wainwright, the Patriots ran roughshod on the Satria Muda Britama of Indonesia to complete a 3-0 sweep in the finals early this year to rule the maiden season of the ABL. Patriots owners Mikee Romero of Harbour Centre and business magnate Tony Boy Cojuangco promised a stronger Patriots knowing that everybody will be ganging up on them. “For winning the inaugural championship, I’m sure our rivals will be preparing hard in order to stop us,” Romero, who is gunning for his fourth international crown as an owner, said. “But we will also prepare since our legacy and pride is at stake in the tournament.” Romero’s Harbour Centre franchise in the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) owns the longest title run, having won seventh straight championships. “It’s our keen desire to keep the championship and we will be doing everything to form a highly competitive team,” said Cojuangco. Even league founder Dato Sri Tony Fernandes of Malaysia believes the Patriots are still the team to beat. “Now all teams are plotting against the Philippines, that's the goal. It's (Philippines) like the Manchester United in football," said Fernandes during Monday's press launch held in Jakarta. "But good luck trying, it's going to be tough." Erick Arejola, who stood in for Romero and Cojuangco in the launch along with Harbour Center COO for administration Edwin Jeremillo, said the Patriots will start preparing next month and the team composition will be known by then. Cojuangco was represented by Maan Hontiveros.

A DECISION on whether or not to grant exchampion Antonio Margarito a license to fight WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champion Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium could be made as early as Thursday or Friday rather than the usual week-long process, according to a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The story was first reported by BoxingScene. com. “We have received the license and a check for $20.00, which is the licensing fee. And it's currently under review. And, there's approximately three-tofour people who will review it,” said Susan Stanford, public relations specialist for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. “They (the reviewers) will be in licensing and in the compliance divisions,” said Stanford. “Licensing normally takes on the average, 10 days, but I'm hoping to have either the license granted or denied on Thursday or Friday of this week.” Margarito (38-6, 27 knockouts) is scheduled to face Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium for the vacant WBC junior middleweight (154 pounds) title.

PBA Commissioner Renauld “Sonny” Barrios assesses the league’s performance in the past season while PBA Board of Governors chair Rene Pardo speaks on overview of the coming 36th campaign starting October 3 at the Araneta Coliseum during the PSA Forum at Shakey's along UN Ave., Manila.

NBA’s Glen Rice teams up with Allan Caidic
THREE-time National Basketball Association All-Star Glen Rice is looking forward to playing alongside the Philippine Basketball Association’s “Triggerman,” Allan Caidic, as the two will team up for the Red Team against the White Team in the NBA Asia Challenge 2010 at the Araneta Coliseum. Rice, the 1997 NBA All-Star Game MVP, is among the four ex-NBA superstars that will see action at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Friday). The second edition of the NBA Asia Challenge will feature mixed teams comprised of NBA Legends, NBA D-League players, and PBA All-Stars and Legends. “I've been waiting for the Triggerman. I've heard a lot of him and can't wait to play with him,” said Rice during a press conference for the second staging of NBA Asia Challenge at the Fiesta San Miguel room of the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel in Makati City. In last year's NBA Asia Challenge, where the PBA Legends played against the Kareem Abdul Jabbarcoached NBA Legends, Caidic drained five straight three-pointers in the first quarter of their match. “It would be great to match skills with him and I've heard he is a great shooter so expect a lot of fireworks,” added Rice, who made a name for his three-point shooting accuracy where he finished eighth in the NBA’s three-point field goals made in his 16-year professional career.

Barrios bowing out of PBA

THE officials of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), led by outgoing Commissioner Sonny Barrios and Chairman Rene Pardo, foresee another banner year for the league’s 36th season that begins October 3, coming on the heels of the success generated during the 2009-2010 playing calendar. Reverting back to the old reliable three-conference format, a new, vibrant team in Meralco Bolts, fresh crop of talents, and the other usual activities of the league in and out of the court had Pardo beaming with pride that it can surpass whatever gains made during the recently concluded season. To top it all, the league chairman from B-Meg Derby Ace announced in the weekly PSA Forum at Shakey’s U.N Ave. that Meralco will go head on against Barangay Ginebra, universally acknowledged as the most popular team in the PBA in the opening day of the new season. Unfortunately, however, Barrios

will no longer be around that time as he’s set to be succeeded by Atty. Chito Salud once the PBA Board of Governors hold its annual planning session in Hongkong next week. “We’re all very enthusiastic about the coming season, although I would have become a PBA fan like you by that time,” said Barrios as he formally announced his decision to step down Tuesday in the session presented by Outlast Battery, PAGCOR and Shakey’s. “But it was a very rewarding and very fulfilling stint for me. And I thank the Board of Governors for giving me that chance to serve as commissioner. In my three years, including my stint as OIC (Officer In-Charge), I have hurdled all controversies. We were lucky to have a Philippine team during my time, which was an entirely different experience for me as a commissioner,” added Barrios, who, nonetheless, was offered by Pardo to act as adviser to the league he has served for 21 years.
