COMPUTER NETWORK AND INTERNET

Introduction Exchange of information is required in many situations between two users. In such situations, data communications is very much needed. Data communication refers to transferring data from one computer to another by a data carrier cable that connects two computers. This concepts of merging computers and communications leads to computer network. COMPUTER NETWORK A network is an interconnection of two or more computers that are able to exchange information. The computer may be connected via any data communication link, like copper wires , optical fibers, communication satellites, or radio links. The computer connected to the network my be personal computers or large main frames. The computers in a network may be located in a room, building, city, country or any where in the World.

Benefits of computer network There are many benefits in having computer networks. Some of them are given below Data sharing. Device sharing. High reliability. Economic. Speedy data transfer. Flexibility. Access to remote information. Person to person communication. Interactive Entertainment.

Classification of computer network
The different network types are distinguished from each other based on the size of the network, transmission technology, networking topology. Computer network is broadly classified into three types  Local Area Network(LAN).  Metropolitan Area Network(MAN).  Wide Area Network(WAN).

•LAN

It is an interconnection of autonomous computers with in a single building or a campus. It is generally called LAN. LAN’s are privately owned computer networks. The range of LANs may vary from 10m to 1.5 km. LANs are small sized network.

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK:MAN is a computer network spread over a city. Cable television network is an example of MAN. The computers in a MAN are connected using co-axial cables or fiber optics cables. MAN also connects several LAN spread over a city.

 MAN:-

• WIDE AREA NETWORK:It is a collection of computers that are graphically spread over a wide area. A WAN can span over a country or continent. That is to say that one user being in some country can have access to the computer in some other country.

•INTERNET
It is a network of computer networks. It connects LAN, WAN and even our own personal computer. It is also called information super highway. We can access any information from any place at any time on the internet.  The internet is often referred to as the “Information Super highway”.  No one owns the internet. But everyone connected to it owns parts of it.  It is not governed by any central authority but there are agencies and societies that perform coordinating functions , such as the registration of domain names.

The web sites produced by institutions, business and private users cover just about every imaginable topic.  The internet was developed in 1969 as a communication network for the US military. Soon, other government agencies, colleges and research companies began using the internet’s. 1.E-mail. 2.File transfer. 3.Remote login facilities.  Internet Relay chart(IRC) allows groups of people to communicate with each other in real time.  Internet telephony is a relatively new technology used digitize sound and transfer it across the internet. It is also called Voice over IP(VOIP).

Voice conferencing technology had been developed . There are many service provider around the globe. In India, VSNL( Videsh Sanchar Nigama Limited) provides Internet services. Presently some private organizations like Satyam info way, BPL, Wipro etc. Started providing internet services. These organizations including VSNL are called ISPs (Internet service provider) . AOL( America Online) is one of the American ISPs. Internet services in India was started on 15th August 1995.

•Connecting to the Internet:To connect your pc to the internet, the following hardware and software are required.  Modem:It stands for modulator and demodulator. It is used to connect the pc to a telephone line.  Telephone Line:To transmit data or message over a wide area.  A PPP( point to point protocol) account with an internet service provider.  Internet connection software.(TCP/IP).  Software for E-mailing, browsing the web and so on.

•Services of Internet:Some of the Internet services are given below 1. E-mail 2. Electronic News Paper 3.Internet commerce(E-commerce). 4. Virtual schooling. 5.Entertainment.
